Where to now for the Waratahs?

By Rickety Knees / Roar Guru

2012 is yet another annus horribilis for the Waratahs. It started off badly, when Kurtley Beale was snatched from right under their noses.

It was then compounded by the swapping of Ben Mowen for Rocky Elsom (and making him captain when was clearly unfit to play).

The pre-season injury disasters of Turner and Mitchell exposed the Waratahs’ lack of quality backups out wide, which is being shown up more as the season progresses.

Carter’s brain explosion in round one against the Reds robbed the Waratahs not only of points but valuable momentum.

Jaco Peyper incorrect no-try decision against Tatafu Polota-Naus in the same game didn’t help.

The Waratahs didn’t even show up to play against the Western Force in Sydney in round four

A more courageous defensive effort against Robbie Fruean in round one would have won them the Crusaders game.

The Waratahs’ performance against the Brumbies in the last round was inexplicable.

In summary, the loss of Beale reveals poor player management and the trade of Mowen for Elsom shows poor recruiting.

Carter’s actions against Reds exemplified their poor on-field decision making, the Western Force game highlighted their poor preparation and attitude and the Brumbies game revealed their poor tactics and strategies.

Each round presents a new opportunity to get something wrong.

Year after year, there is a similar story to be told.

In a recent article, Spiro Zavos suggested that the Waratahs’ “entitlement culture” was at the root of the problem.

In contrast we have seen what Jake White has done with the Brumbies in taking on a Brumby “entitlement culture” and astutely recruiting a captain (Mowen) from outside of the organisation.

To his credit the Brumbies are now leading the Australian conference with a young team of virtual no-names.

The Waratah tradition (which has won nothing in the professional era) and its related entitlement culture needs to be cleaned out.

Until Foley, or his replacement, are bold enough to take this step nothing will change.

Foley is in the first year of his contract. It is time for him to clear the decks for 2013 and steer the Waratahs to a new unencumbered direction, free of entitlement and self serving agendas.

White has shown that it can be done; now it is up to Foley to see if he can do the same.

OVERRATED McCalman does a lot not particularly well. I'd rather a forward going at 100% 50% of the time, than someone going at 50-60% all the time Ben Hand - I find him soft and useless UNDERRATED Leali'ifano - he's one of the best Aussie players going around right now, yet no one including the Wallaby selectors has him as a cert for the test team. Even as a Tahs fan, but more a rugby and Wallaby supporter, I am shattered by that injury. And after the bell. Hodgson - look at his stats Sekope Kepu is having a very good season in the scrum and with his runs, but not getting credit for it. He's at least as good in the scrums as palmer but 1,000 times better round the field. Ita Vaea - he should be playing full games and can play anywhere in the back row. High workrate, hits hard, runs hard and maked tough yards. Jarrod Saffy - gets through a mountain of work and carries that Rebels pack at times. Tackles very well and hits the rucks, and is a handy ball runner too

No one else Pilfers - Alcock 15th. Missed tackles - Rob Horne 4th with 24 (even after 2 weeks out) and Halangahu 18th with 19 missed tackles ( even after off the bench in recent games)

If I was a player manager, I would not recomend my client sign with the Waratahs. It is a kiss of death for a career, The Waratahs consume good players. Think Barnes, AAC as 2 recent examples. The one exception has been Mitchell. I fear for Michael Hooper. It is the land of favoured sons ( Carter, Halengahu, Elsom, Horne ) . The first 3 here would not get a start in any other franchise. On another topic, Horne continues to get written up as offering great defensive value and sharp attacking skills. I think Horne is one of those guys that has a huge wrap on them but in reality, they never deliver. Up until his suspension, he had the most missed tackles in the whole Super Rugby competition. He is a liability in defense. It is a long time since he has done anything in attack. He would have to be the most overarated player in Australian Rugby. Well, OK, equal with Rocky. Who is your selection for most overarated player in Aussie Rugby and who is th emost underated play?

RK true, and it's noteworthy that it was a completely new organisational regime that appointed Mckenzie, which wouldn't be the same in the case of the Waratahs.

Let’s look at the squad KEEP Robinson Kepu Ryan TPN STimani Douglas LTimani Alcock Palu – coming back to his best McKibbin BFoley Mitchell Turner – good player, local boy to stick with Tom Kingston – good year Pakalani Pretorius - great impact player, I actually prefer him ahead of McKibbin for the spark he adds, the energy and speed. UNDECIDED Ulugia Horne based on given a chance at 12 a better position for him than 12. Tilse? Missed out letting Palmer go Dennis AAC Vickerman DISCARD Mumm Elsom Fitzpatrick McCutcheon – I feel sorry for him for that injury, but Hoopper and Alcock way ahead Carter Halangahu Jenkins – we have Alcock and Hooper *** Barnes his attack is woeful, he passes behind or too high, he rarely takes the line on ever since the migraine, kicks poorly and far to much, defence has fallen off as well. Reds, Rebels, Brumbies all have a better 10. NEED a top level coach NOT AN INSIDER preferably not an aussie, Get Mallet a top 10-12, to work with BFoley. Player wise, that’s it. Maybe a good 13 as well, depending on AAC

No argument KPM - what worries me is that any innovative coach will get strangled by the Tahs entitlement clique

In 31 minutes play TPN didn't hit one single, miserable ruck? What position is he again?

according to www.rugbystats.com.au james hanson played 59 minutes, made 4 runs for 15 metres, effected 2 tackles, hit 3 rucks & got one turnover. TPN only played 31 minutes, made 3 tackles, 1 run for 19 metres and got 2 turnovers. that for mine makes TPNs work rate higher, but hey, there stats, they can be skewed.

the brumes have a leadership group. why is it important for the tags to abolish it? and how does it reinforce an "entitlement culture" to ask people to take responsibility for the behaviour and standards of those around them, this is a baffling notion.

haha, well case solved then. Dave Dennis is a better player than Ben Mowen, Palu getting injured allowed Ben to keep his spot but it was clear that Dennis had surpassed him. the Tahs didn't err and um, they offered him a contract, the only fact that has come out is that the contract was for 2 years and ben wanted one, why? because Ben wanted the option to leave, why did he want that, cos he doubted he was going to be a first 15 player. im glad he is doing well at the brums, he is a very decent superugby player and deserves opportunity, i will continue to object to the notion that the Tahs somehow botched his signing, the guy moved on, are we blaming the brumes for Hopper coming to the Tahs next season, no, were respecting his decision to sign, its funny how peoples opinions on clubs get in the way of actually seeing a situation for what it is.

wow. dave dennis is one of the best performing 6s int he entire competition, crazy talk. do you not rate him cos he isn't out on the wing like huggers doing chip kicks? someone has to do the hard yards and he does them so effectively and consistently it isn't funny. L.Timani is in development, why throw him out there instead of bring him in with planning and management? we had another young good kid, how did Kurtleys first few years go for him?

y the f would anyone get rid of Palu? dude has had a serious 2 year injury and is on the comeback and is making more metres and hit ups than any aus 8 in the competition. its just crazy. instead of just jumping up and down, what young player would you bring in tot he team (that isn't some throw money at this guy option) to replace them?

can someone explain how Chris Hickey was an entitled inside coach? he was a cut price alternative under a ton of pressure and won coach of the year three times, yep, terrible.

serious? he isn't a necessity, but he is worth 10 points and a couple of line breaks a game, he isn't a bonus, he is a great player.

rocky was awesome in his 20 minutes on saturday, the gamble may be paying off with him. TPN has great defence, it isn't woeful at all, his technique gets him injured, sure, vbut his defence is quite effective, there two different issues. i just don't think with a squad of thirty players and 4 of the first 15 back line players out that the Tahs have the depth in the backs to compete, its a pretty simple diagnosis. the forwards are doing just fine.

I think the Scrum is a fair comment, However Hanson would be ok with Robinson and Kepu on his sides. Faingaa not to sure about.
