The Waratahs are Wallaby killers

By stillmissit / Roar Guru

I had the painful experience of watching the ‘talent’ wasted by the Waratahs against the Stormers. You could almost read the pain on Berrick Barnes face as he kicked and kicked and kicked.

It then dawned on me that he must have felt that by following this brain dead strategy he was kicking his Wallaby chance away.

Then there is Rob Horne, one of the really talented Waratahs. He did nothing but tackle all day as the Stormers ran the ball back at him from our aimless stupid kicks. His chances of a Wallaby jersey are non existent.

Rocky Elsom tried hard and by pushing things, to try to overcome the lack of ball in hand, gave away a pile of penalties. It’s questionable whether Robbie Deans will take him at his current showing.

Adam Ashley-Cooper was another who put in but found it impossible to shine and had to go looking for the ball, which he did well. He could get a spot in the Wallabies. Bernard Foley like Ashley-Cooper was trying but is unlikely to make the squad.

Both wings will not see a Wallaby jersey as they rarely got any ball. Who knows if they have real talent against serious opposition if the Waratahs do not give them any ball?

Of those that tried within the confines of this madhouse of 1990’s rugby, Dave Dennis stood out and may have earned himself a spot in the squad. Ben Robinson, Kane Douglas and apart from the dropped balls and penalties given Sekope Kepu tried.

Several of the old hands here at The Roar have been on about getting a top quality coach for a few years and I have often added my name to those posts.

Foley is not up to the level needed for the talent he has at his disposal. Chris Hickey was the same. EWen McKenzie didn’t do well, but is now heading a successful Reds team. You cannot win a war with part of your army missing in action and this has been the Waratahs ongoing, deep seated problem.

The basic rule of coaching is the same as corporate management – good managers make things happen!

All Foley is doing is killing Wallabies.

Grow up Hannibal, looking for some time in the sun, trying to be the next big sensation!! What a joke...I saw your little sad excitement when someone from the media sent you a note - WOW.....maybe you might get in the paper!!! hannibal have you called them and asked for some clarity - have you? Like a grown up, picked up the phone and said hey I am really passionate about this and would like to provide some feedback. I doubt it - this is the faceless world of social media, where even you can try and become something, but you won't get what you want. Why, because you are playing the man!! Your strategy is wrong, it never works, a bit of excitment for 5 minutes and it dies...oh we wont buy another ticket until I see a clean out, all the staff - well that's possibly the most ludicrous, simpleton message I have ever read. Pick up the phone, make a call and I am sure they would respond to you. A good mate of mine went and watched training a month ago and spoke to the Coaches, he found it pretty interesting and left with more clarity. Did you consider that? probably not, as that would mean you have to leave that little cave and expose who you are, like adults do!

Hannibal, you are sick! What a joke. Why don't you give them a call and have a cuppa and express your thoughts? Want a moment in the sun....obviously you are deprived. You may have a list of other whinging, whining supposed suporters, but I saw your comments on how excited you were when someone from the media expressed interest in your little plan - I pity you. have some guts, make a call and have a yarn. Working in the shadows is for low lives. As to the rest of you wanting a clean out,it simply doesn't work like that. I have watched Rugby a long time as well and listened to the rubbish, negativity and spoken to players over the years. The one consistent message I heard was their sincere lack of understanding at to why there is a MINORITY of people that live their life through watching others fail, or wanting them to - this is many of you whom write on these pages. You are simply not helping.....

Yes and no. Why would coaches undertake a role with the Waratahs if that were true though?

I was sitting next to a knowledgeable and involved 'Tahs supporter at the Brumbies a couple of weeks ago... he claimed that selections in NSW are politics-dominated and that's why it doesn't work so well. Makes as much sense as anything else, no?

Your absolutely correct, I give a lot of the reds success to Phil Mooney, Link was the icing on the cake, his tenure at the waratahs was similar to Foleys, Hickey was a bloody idiot and so is Foley they both have no idea about winning rugby, its always the safe option first which is and has been the wrong option, but they dont seem to be able to figure that one out and neither do the players, Barnes was told to kick so he does all match and loses the game, wonder if Foley can ever say the words DONT KICK THE @% THING YOU BOXHEAD.

Can't feel too sorry the players (Barnes & AAC), after all, they foolishly chose to join the Waratahs.

Right on the money Demo that's why I think the only solution is for the ARU to take back the franchise licences for tne NSWRU and give it to someone else/ some other entity , it's the only way we will get bang for our hard-earned .

Ah yes, but at least good kickers in the AFL can hit a man on the lead, or put it into the space, to their advantage when they want to, unlike the Waratahs. Waratahs would also be to conservative to win any AFL silver wear they'd be kinda like the tigers, good team, always finish 9th :)

True, but why have the three most recent coaches (including Deans) made the same selections?

Well you would think they would have learned there lesson after they played the Reds earlier this season... WHAT DID THEY DO ??? The Waratahs had the ball and the clock had stopped and they had even announced the man of the match who had been replace ??? WHY DID THEY KICK THE BALL ????? they had that game won ... Haven t watched much since then as it is to annoying to see the ball kicked all the time ... I am not a fan of AFL sorry to say.

Patonga: Either they are looking for careers in AFL or coach Foley won't risk anything else but kicking as his day job relies on being 'near enough'. As some smart scribe once wrote 'Near enough ain't bloody close enough'.....

not really convinced with Blake Harry, but he says encouraging things and then you can see it oozing slowly onto the field (like molasses). The real problem he is an assistant coach making his way. In all honesty the Force need a coach that has the kudos and chops to keep who we have, attract some current quality and some future stars, and instill in the players some self belief and winning mentality. Maybe that's Chieka who is a senior coach, not sure. Wayne Smith says he is comfy playing second fiddle back home, but perhaps they could have interviewed him anyway and offered enough filthy lucre to entice him. I would also have looked at Todd Louden who has a very good record at achieving these things albeit not at this level.

It was a mistake letting Vickerman leave Australian rugby and it was a mistake bringing him back. Him and Elsom have been massive disappointments. Though I am as harsh as anyone on the Tahs, I do think they've missed Mitchell and Beale terribly this year.

the team is full of doubt .... the old rugby saying goes when in doubt kick it out...and they did it again this year just like last year... Berrick Barnes is always in doubt so he kicks it out... But is this what he is being told to do ??? or is his mind set on i have the ball i better kick it now .... I find it so hard to watch the Waratahs as all they do is kick the ball...Maybe they are looking for careers in AFL????????? \

Harry are you just teasing about Foley's job being 'on the line'? I'm hugely disappointed in what Foley has brought as coach & despite my early optimism with the Gaffney appointment, I'm yet to notice his influence. It baffles me as to why the NSW Management can't get the basics right when appointing a coach. I can see us weather years of dull Rugby while Foley fumbles along convincing himself that we are 90% of the way there. I know we have a ton of injured players (and that doesn't things) but frankly wonder who makes the decision to actually contract injured players and make them Skipper? Will we ever be seeing Vickerman in sky blue? :(

Could poor selecting be the reason? Dan Palmer was left out of the 22 behind Al Baxter so he left. Timani and Douglas have to split a game between themselves while Mumm plays 80 minutes each week. There have been better options available that the selectors have ignored.

Too often the trouble with these coaches* is they are too conservativeand choose to go ultra-denfensive/limited. They have some success with a limited game plan or identity a strength and focus the rest of the time on "shutting down the oppostion" or "cutting out the low percentage plays". The other thing is that playing a limited boring game is easier to coach than an expansive attacking game I'm sure. I do understand why coaches like Foely and Graham go this route. Its coaching inside their comfort zone and doing what they know best. I know if I had my job on the line like these guys do all the time I'd probaby veer towards conservative decision-making. * By these coaches I mean Foley and Graham. By the way, there is a vast difference between being well drilled and getting the basics right, and playing a limited game plan that relies on opposition mistakes. Note Jake White's work at the Brumbies this year for a well coached side thats not necessarily playing an overly flash game, or all out attack.

I (almost) stopped reading your post as soon as you said Pretorious has a better pass than McKibbon... Sarel is a demon on the snipe, but has one of the worst passes of any halback I have ever seen playing super rugby... 100% agree on Mumm and Carter, absolute baggage and seem to be an advertisement of all that is wrong with NSW rugby. I think it is the combination of arrogance and denial...

Harry agree re Phil Blake. He is doing a good job with a squad that has had to face some big upheavals. Certainly Blake appears better than Foley and Blake is a NSW'man.
