NRL jerseys need a revamp

By turbodewd / Roar Guru

I am always appalled by the state of NRL jerseys and alas I have nothing positive to say about them.

When I grew up in the ‘80s NSWRL jerseys were fairly simple, tidy and rarely changed. There was one sponsor on the front. These days they are covered in sponsor patches of various colours.

They also seem to change yearly, their designs are too busy and each team seems to have 3-4 designs during the season too. It’s an eyesore and the rot must stop!

The AFL and NFL are yardsticks by which the NRL must measure itself. Those leagues are far more successful financially than the NRL, so why do we do things so differently to them?

In those leagues the jerseys are simple, rarely change, feature player-specific numbers and aren’t covered in ads (NFL ones are ad free!). People buy those jerseys by the truckload while I’m left cringing at NRL jerseys.

If I was in charge of the NRL I would adopt a player-specific numbering system so that each player keeps that number for his whole stay at a certain team, it would work like this:

Props choose from 90-99 (biggest players = biggest numbers)
2nd row: 80-89
Hookers: 60-69
Locks: 70-79
Halfbacks: 1-9
5/8th: 50-59
Centers: 30-49
Wings: 20-29
Fullbacks: 11-19

In addition, lets get player names on those jerseys please! We do it in Origin, why not be consistent?

And how about go back to the old limit of one sponsor on the front of the jersey and it must be in team colors.

The red Huawei flower on the front of the Raiders jersey is absurd!

yeah titans jersey is all over the shop isn't it.Nice set of colours but poor design. Also I don't like mentioning the other code from the south but i must concide I do like how the melbourne teams hardly ever change their jersey, N.R.L please take note .I don't mind one off jerseys like Canterbury's Avatar jersey etc as long as they look good, but my main bugbear is boring WHITE away jerseys that don't have to be worn. Why can't Warriors,Cowboys and Storm use their imagination and wear Silver away jersey or something along those lines. Can't be that hard surely.

It's not just about being able to recognise one team from the other on the field. My comment is more about club heritage through brand recognition. St G has great brand recognition with the red V, as does South Sydney with its hoops...virtually unchanged for 100 years. The clubs that constantly change their home jersey (often at the behest of sponsors or to maximise merchandise revenue) dilutes the brand (and the club's heritage) in my opinion.

Ok, so Barca may not be the best choice. But what about a team like Bayern Munich, which have gone from solid red to red and white stripes to red and white hoops and back to red again? I get you're talking about design. I'm saying that the colours are more important than the design. There is a benefit in having a traditional design (eg Celtic's green and white hoops, or the Red V of St George illawarra), but I don't think people are incapable of recognising teams when given one of two options on the field.

I'm talking about the actaul design, not just the colours. I could draw Barca's HOME kit...the scarlet and blue stripes have been in place since 1900. The number or thickness of the stripes have been modified over the years, but it's essentially the same vertical stripe motif. http://www.barcaloco.com/kit-history/ The away kit, like every soccer club, varies wildly. However, the Broncos have repeatedly modified the actual design: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane_Broncos Have a look at the Raiders as another exmaple: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra_Raiders

Could you draw Barcelona's jersey? It's changed so often in the last 6 years (more often than any NRL side, because there are no limits on how often they can change it) that people might have an idea, but not completely. But kids could tell you that Broncos are Maroon and yellow/gold, and I would argue that it's more about the colours than the specific jersey design.

I've posted this before (and not intending to whack league), but a Qld journo once asked how many kids could actually draw an accurate picture of the Broncos home guernsey? Then he asked how many could draw Essendon or Collingwood's? The point is that the NRL tops are not just covered in sponsorship & logos but many of them change so regularly (the design, not the colours) that is dilutes the power of their brand. The yanks do it best, the purity of their sports uniforms is a thing of beauty...could never happen here though.

There's a few clubs out there doing the right thing. I think the Broncos are on the right track. But the Tiger's are a disgrace to themselves, the NRL and rugby league. Just looking at a tigers crowd and every fan's wearing something different. Worst still, they can't even get orange right. They look more like a bunch of road workers in that high viz orange. Also the away white jerseys for most teams are plain rubbish. Last time I checked the Raiders were the only fluoro green team out there… maybe against the bunnies, but why do they need a white jersey for half their games?

I think a scarf is fair enough in Canberra, totally justifiable I'm sure, but as JJ pointed out any bloke in Sydney wearing a scarf is kidding himself.

I remember a year or 2 ago the Bulldogs ran out in a dedicated Avatar uniform. It was pretty much all blue. Now that was absurd.

They would probably make double the money on turtlenecks in Canberra given most Canberrians have two heads.

if OAK are prepared to pay for the space and they deternine it sells more of their mouth watering flavoured milk, then yes. The Panthers are not going to tell them "listen, keep your sponsorship cash in your pocket". Personally, i'd like to see more consistency in the jumpers. Like most of the readers have said, each club has multitude of jerseys that vary week to week. On occasions the identity of the team i support is hard to determine. But i don't think the game generates enough income to go alone without and display of sponsorship. Nowadays pretty much every field is named after some business entity and the big stadiums change names on regular basis. It's a corporate game, without the dollar there would be no game. Even the strapping of players have messages on them now (check most players wrists) which the sponsors are probably looking to exploit Agree, that they need to keep sponsorship in some form of check though. Don't want to see a day when the Sharkies run out dressed in Ronald McDonald uniforms

Scarves are almost an essential for a frosty night out at Bruce Stadium. It's either that or a turtleneck.

Jazzy, Penrith have OAK on the front of the jersey...do they really also need it on the back?

get rid of advertising equates to getting rid of the club. they are always crying poor for money, so can't see how deterring sponsorship is going to be of any positive

i am cautious of men wearing scarves. I can never fathom seeing a grown man wearing a short sleeve t shirt, loafers and jeans and a big scarf. Incidentally, go the Sharks

All people were asking them to do was to provide a guernsey that they could use when clashes occurred. It was lunacy! What they've done now is all that people expected: a guernsey that was more white than black.

Spot on about all the advertising. It ruins the jumpers. I made a quick count the other day and saw some teams have 6 or 7 commercial logos on their jersey - it is a joke. The AFL model is the way to go - 1 small sponsor on the front and one larger one on the back.

The Bulldogs already do this. It's copied off the NFL 12th Man concept (11 on the field in NFL).

I went to rebel sport to by a pair of boots, and they ONLY SELL MULTICOLOURED BOOTS, or just plain white. I tried to buy the blackest boots (and cheapest) I could find............in the end I had to settle for black and fluro green/yellow
