Olympics Memories

By johnnoo / Roar Pro

The Olympics starts in London this week on Friday. Over the next 2 weeks there will be a lot of excitement, nerves, tension, heartbreak, happiness.

A roller coaster of human emotions will be on show at the olympics these next 2 weeks. It will be exciting. But I have many Olympic memories so many hard to remember all of them. Here are a few of mine. That stand out as the pinnacle ones.

Usain Bolt’s Olympic and world record at Beijing 2008 was amazing he shattered the mens 100m world record. It almost defied belief 9.69 seconds. Wow that is lightning fast. Micheal Johnson at Atlanta was very special too the 200m and 400m gold medal double. Cathy Freeman of course at Sydney in the woman’s 400m athletics. Ian Thorpe winning the 400m freestyle at Sydney, and riding home the 100metre 4X100m relay team, beating Gary Hall Junior to the post.

And the Dream team USA were amazing too in Barcelona 92. What a talented team take your pick from Micheal Jordan to Majic johnson to Larry Bird.

Sergi Bubka maybe the greatest ever sports star won an Olympic gold medal in the pole vault at 1988 breaking the world record. He could of won more gold’s but didn’t always produce his best at the Olympics for one reason or another.

Debbie Flintoff king was always inspiring winning the 400m hurdles in 1988.

And the hockeyroos, winning too many gold medals, too steven Redgrave going to 5 olympic games and picking up 5 golds along the way. And I am sure there are many many more Olympic games memories that will live on forever.

From Eric the Eagle to Micheal Jordan , they maybe in different sporting levels but it is about participating and trying to be the best athlete you can be. Olympic games chokes are often just as exciting as the Olympic gold wins by the favourites, as are the stories of wild partying that goes on at the Olympic games and sensational stories that you can’t believe happens but can only imagine.

Either way you look at it the Olympics are a success and I think they are a great sports event filled with so many Olympic games memories that always make a lot of fun too have as memories.

Swimming again, Jodie Henry 2004, modest, shoulder shrugging triple gold medallist. A notoriously shrugging attitude to training as well. Got up when it matter most.

More swimming, Jon Sieben 1984 and Duncan Donuts Armstrong 1988 apparently coming from the clouds to beat more fancied opponents.

Kieran Perkins winning the 1500 from Lane 8, Atlanta 1996. One of the gutsiest performances ever.

"From Eric the Eagle to Micheal Jordan, they maybe in different sporting levels but it is about participating and trying to be the best athlete you can be." Johnno, how very prophetic of you! It's almost a bit deep for a Friday, isn't it?!?

Fantastic moments at the Sydney Olympics. My favourite memory was being there at the athletics, as Cathy Freeman ran the 400 metres to gold; followed by an epic pole vault final as Tatiana Gregorieva went down to Stacey Dregila. Perched even higher than the pole, way up the top of the highest level; looking down over the home straight as Freeman ran down her rivals. I also attended football, tennis, baseball and rowing, and another session of athletics - but that night was the highlight.

Johno, you capture some of the most memorable Olympic moments very well. I'd also like to add Phelps' astonishing run of magnificent success in Beijing winning eight gold medals, living up to his promise made prior to the event. Legendary stuff. Thanks Johno.

Thelmawrites , yes it was a great Olympics sydney 2000. Many say it is the best games ever, but I think people from each nation will say the Olympics was the best Olympics and others 2nd. Same with the winter Olympics are great events too. The transport problems of sydney 2000 were a myth too, most people i spoke too including me said the transport in sydney was great. I got out to homebush no problem and at the major events too. So it was all good for based on my experiences at least. The opening ceremony was great. I miss Sydney too, now that you mentioned it. It will watching the london opening ceremony feel happy and nostalgic and sad at the same time yearning for sydney. Beijing Olympics only feel like yesterday strangely , and same with sydney 2000 too. Wow life travels fast. We are all getting older us and the world in a blink of an eye. A great Olympics London promises too be, and i love all the multichannel now on foxtel. Technology makes the world better overall not worse i say, and helps sport no question.

So many happy things during the Sydney Olympics, Johnnoo. HG and Roy managed to be funny...a volunteer produced a rag and wiped our wet seats when a hockey game nearly got rained out...We could walk to Anzac Parade for the marathons. In fact I get sentimental when I still see the blue line on the road...Or walk to Centennial Park for the cycling...The men from Snowy River on their horses for the Opening Ceremony. And the bogong moths on the bosom of one soprano, I forget her name (Yvonne Kenny?). Transport was no problem, especially since we had to get back to Kensington from North Sydney Park where we watched the Closing Ceremony. And the man whose golf car rammed into a deliberately makeshift dais with planted speakers during the Closing Ceremony - which sent some delegates (from Africa, I think?) into fits of laughter. And then for all the kids to pick his cart apart. Take a bow, sir! I enjoyed the sporting events, but the entire atmosphere in Sydney and environs was enthralling. Now I'm getting homesick for Sydney.
