Brian Smith gone from Sydney Roosters

By News / Wire

Brian Smith will not coach the Sydney Roosters next NRL season after the club announced he would leave by mutual consent.

The club’s chairman Nick Politis and chief Executive Steve Noyce met with veteran mentor Smith on Wednesday before announcing the decision.

The Roosters, who will welcome dual international Sonny Bill Williams next season, are now on the lookout for a new coach.

Roosters chairman Nick Politis paid tribute to Smith’s efforts at the club since joining from Newcastle in 2010, when he led the team to the grand final in his first season in charge.

“One of Brian’s greatest strengths is developing young talent and he wholeheartedly embraced our strategic plan in relation to developing talented young players and he leaves the club in an extremely strong position in this area,” Politis said.

“A man of strong values, Brian embraced the clubs values honesty, respect, self-control, pride in the Roosters jersey and leaves behind a strong culture that will continue to grow moving forward.”

The Roosters were Smith’s fifth NRL club since he commenced his head coaching career with Illawarra in 1984.

The club said it would make a decision on a future coaching appointment “in the foreseeable future”.

Just guessing but I think it'll be between Jason Taylor and Danial Anderson. They wont lure Bellamy away from Melb hes got to much to prove. If it was an established stable team I think JT would be a good fit as hes already part of the club understands the culture and has a few runs on the board as an NRL coach. But I think that as the roosters are far from stable and are about to enter a transition year with a lot of sacrifices having just been made to accommodate a superstar blow in. If I was NP Id be going after Anderson they're probably going to need an older hand to get the most outta SBW and keep the club from imploding if SBW doesn't = success whilst also providing direction for the serious spending splurge that will be happening for the 14 season. Musing here....I wouldn't rule out a Roosters Inglis / Thurston bid for 14 the chooks have really cleared the decks for what could be the requirement coup of the RL century! The only clubs that could challenge them in the player market for an audacious bid like this would be Penrith and the Cowboys.

From what Bellamy said as he signed his last contract with Storm... when he leaves, that's it.. back to family and a less stressful environment... He has been brilliant at Storm and whateve other clubs offer, they must match it!.. (If he wants to stay on!).

Jason Taylor and then Bellamy in 2014. Uncle Nick would have a plan for sure.

Bellamy wont be leaving the Storm. At least not for another year, they would be mad to let him go anyhow.

Yeah, good luck with that. Who is your coach going to be? Jason Taylor, Adrian Lam?. Seems like a waste of a year to me if Sonny is coming without direction. No offence, but all the good coaches are gone, unless they have Anderson lined up or even Matty Elliot who failed at the Panthers.

I do, he should have been moved into the forwards long ago. A good coach will have him shifted before the start of next season, watch this space. Sandor Earle at the raiders or even Robinson would have been great pickups for the Warriors, they need to keep a eye on the talent being shopped around. The Fish dude is a fullback, they either have to keep him and let lock go, or keep Locke, they cant have both and neither is a winger. These are the little things wrong at the warriors, amoung other things.

Great, great, great news! First we get rid of Braith an now Smiffy is gone. No offence to Brian, he did a great job and built a formidable young squad, but we needed a change and some new direction.

Oikee it is fine line between a good season and a fail of a season ask the warriors they really could have easily been playing finals footy ball. If they had won the games that they led by 18 at the time they would have shown more resistance against sides later and have been playing this weekend ? Check the stats on their games against Manly and Newcastle if they have gotten the 4 points at the time I think they may have been in the top 4 not the bottom 4 ?

3 coaches now gone this year, lucky Furner was not also on the list. Stuart to replace Kearney, wonder who will be in charge of the Roosters. Every coach now needs to be aware of the bottom of the ladder, Tim Sheens is also close to the bottom.

One of Brian’s greatest strengths is to leave by mutual consent. The warriors maybe I would be more worried about Kearney going to the warriors if I was a warriors fan.
