ARLC to unveil strategic plan

By News / Wire

Expansion is expected to be put on the backburner when the ARL Commission unveils its long-term vision for the game today.

With a $1 billion-plus broadcast deal now in place, the ARLC will present its strategic plan through to 2017.

But intent on ensuring the survival and growth of the 16 teams already in the competition, the ARLC is set to announce that expansion is not on the agenda in that time.

The ARLC will confirm a $5 million salary cap for next season and give clubs an indication where the cap and the annual grants are heading over following years.

Also expected are a greater financial commitment to both grassroots and country football and some clarification on representative eligibility for both State of Origin and Test football.

Please mate.....you stating in every single comment that Cronulla should relocate does not equate to F*n research. How did the Northern Eagles go on the central coast.....why didn't the bunnies just relocate rather than re-entering the comp? I'll tell you why because it won't work....it just means losing a fan base. Surprisingly the people who have done the research have decided not to relocate.....and the decision makers are the ones that matter champ unlike your irrational rants that have converted one other muppet below. Now go back to your hole.

Oikee, Much to Chris Chard's chagrin the NFL played their 6th regular season game at Wembley. For the next four years the Jaguars' will play a game there and also a 2nd game will be played in september which appears to be a way ofleading to an expansion/franchise in a decade or so. This system of drip feeding could be done in Perth and Adelaide via your U20's idea and scheduling nrl matches in these cities aswell.

Ronal M. Excuse me. Let me elaborate. The development will ensure @ regular annual rental income for the League's club from the retail side of the development. Patronage due to the fact this development will be adjoined to the club, will ensure increased patronage. b) the profits from sale of apartment close to half of the apartments from the total being developed on the residential side will go to the league club. The club has been run down ;looks tired, this wil be redeveloped increasing patronage. the Leagues club has not been able to support financially the 3rd largest junior rl area because of limited funding under the old setup. This will change. MOney to provide better facilities previously lacking ,will be developed. Judging by the retail people wanting to get involved in the development, they think it's a goer. I have been involved with the club since the 70s as a member and spectator and attended all meetings re the development. So you are wrong with your assumption that fans believe it is the panacea to get fans through the turnstiles.I trust you have religiously attended all the meetings,or in reality read and listened 3rd hand from afar.Judging by your post your knowledge of what has gone on re the development is to put it kindly, rather limited. In fact what gets fans through the turnstiles is a competitive club and fine weather.Against Souths 17,000,Saints 19,000 Tigers over 16,000. It is a nonsense to suggest the development alone will achieve this and the club has never suggested it would. But it will assist long term. The area has a growing population, which refutes the knockers.Green Hill a new development of 400 plus homes adjoining Wanda is in the throes of development.A new development planned near menai with who knows how many homes.Plus the Shire is becoming high density in just about every corner of the area. The development is being attended to by the builders and developers of the Rhodes retail and residential development, hardly a backyard setup. The final word goes to a guy by the name of Peter Gow(of Elle McPherson fame)( who knows a little about making money and developments, that in his career this is the best planned and practiacl development for the club since he was involved . I also pose the question to you,how the hell do you know what the membership figures will be for the club.I certainly wont hazard a guess and I live within a reasonable distance. It is utter nonsense to suggest the development will not make Rugby league any more viable. If the club went down the tube would that be viable. If they had no money for juniors would that be viable. If the club had no regular income outside poker machine. revenue would that be viable. Anyway its all hypothetical, the ARLC will enusre all current clubs are viable before expansion.Horse has bolted as they say in the classics. Those who are talking Shraks relocation, better look for another fall guy.

Crosscoder, a development of land will not make Rugby League any more viable in the shire than it is today. That is the sad thing about this land development. Its being seen as a panache but only provides money (if it works). It will not get one more fan through the turnstiles nor will it gain one more member. The fundamentals are just not there. Cronulla fans are looking at this like King Canute trying to comand the waves not to come in. It just doesn't work. Renegarde, well that certainly sounds like a well researched and reasoned argument. Congratulations champ, you will convert millions of none believers with a quote like that.

:) I do come up with some real doozies, but every now and then i have a real gem in amounst the rubbish. I just seen the new launch of the logo (Chevron and Southern Cross finally our national emblem across all states and ages) and the short promo and John Grants outlines for the game. Excellent, he has not over-promiesed anything i dont think cant be acheived. You can feel it and taste it now, rugby league is going places. Next year will be a blockbuster of mega gigantic proportions. We are now all united behind the shield of the NRL. battle hardened and ready. Bring it on. :)

That's actually not a bad idea Oikee. It's a good way to get a presence in a new market without the massive financial commitment. Also a good way to put down some roots, and build support, before launching a new team. Not a bad idea at all.

Will honestly the clubs have got 'enough time' to consolidate and strengthen even since they being bought into the competition for decades now the fact that til now they have to 'strengthen' still in 2012 is a bit of worry actually. Clubs should of got there act together decades ago with memberships & attendance so this shouldn't occur now typical slow thinking of rugby league strikes again.

Expansion might still happen, but not the a-grade teams. I can see the under20's Toyota cup expanding into Adelaide and Perth for now. This will help the growth of junior footy at grassroots. Grant has plans to grow the grassroots to 700 thousand by 2017. I think this can only be acheived if we add 2 under 20 expansion teams to the roster. Also he is looking to double memberships. I can easily see this hapening if we take into account dogs and cats like the AFL do.

Unlike many Roar readers, it appears the ARLC has done some research on expansion. Nothing for the next five years - enough time to give the existing clubs time to consolidate and strengthen. It's a good move.

Cronulla to Perth LOL.Cronulla with a $300m develoment about to start.Someone been drinking the Kool Aid methinks. I think Oikee shoudl relocate to the ARLC commission to find out exactly what is going on. The Broncos can't even sell out their matches.Check your own backyard. And the city wants a 2nd team ,please.

I know Grant has said no expansion, but relocation must be considered likely. For the NRL to grow, we need to expand into the big cities. We have 2 big cites that dont have teams, with the help of governments and sponsers, surely these teams will thrive. Cronulla and another team should relocate, for the good of the game. No if's or but's, just tell them they are moving. Their are 2 teams that can never grow, the area that they are in wont allow growth, so we are wasting time effort and money on these teams while the game stagnates. For Grant and co to do their jobs properly, they need to make the hard calls for the good of the game. No good being mr nice guy while Rome burns.

If we aren't going to expand yet, and I can understand that even if I don't agree with it, then we have to send Cronulla to Perth. Why Cronulla I hear you ask ? 1 They are the NRL's weakest club and have been for sometime. 2.There are too many teams in Sydney and not nearly enough elsewhere 3. They are a small suberban club in the days where suberban doesnt work 4. They are in the shire which cannot support a Rugby League team 5. They are financially weak and have pinned all their hopes on a highly dubious land deal. If that goes belly up it will make the Titans 2012 look like prudent financial administrators. 6. They have never won anything except the record for the biggest losing streak - twice. 7. They have the lowest memberships of any NRL club 8. They have the worst attendance record of any club particularly when the travelling Sydney fans are discounted. In short, the concept of a footy team in the shire is fundamentally flawed and against the best interests of the game. On the other hand, a move to Perth would : Set the sharks up in a brand new region. Give it the opportunity to clear out a lot of dead wood. Allow them to maximise any land benefits as they could then build on shark park Receive much more development assistance from the WA government than they share in NSW Receive more NRL support as a strategic development team Benefit from exclusive access to a local sponsorship pool Have an exclusive state wide supporter base instead of just the shire and in competition for that. The move is a roaring no brainer but a delusional Gallop and a heads in the sand approach by the shonkies has meant that this option is continually ignored. If we are not going to expand this competition then this has to be the altenative. Perth needs a team now.
