Judd, Malthouse criticise AFL ruling

By News / Wire

Carlton captain Chris Judd and his new coach Mick Malthouse have blasted the AFL decision that puts the star player’s third-party deal under the club salary cap.

Judd’s management have said they will fight the league announcement on Friday that his long-time agreement with recycling giant Visy could no longer exist outside club total player payments.

The lucrative ambassador role is understood to be worth about $200,000 a season.

“It’s certainly very disappointing from our point of view and makes it very difficult to cultivate a career post-footy and explore work opportunities while you are playing,” Judd told Channel Seven.

He added the “goal posts are constantly being moved”.

The AFL say they flagged two years ago that the rules surrounding third-party deals would be tightened with the advent of free agency.

But Malthouse, who is with Judd and his teammates at a pre-season camp in Arizona, was also unimpressed.

“When you start changing the rules halfway through, I’m just astounded,” Malthouse said.

“I don’t think it’s fair on either (Judd or Carlton) or any other player in the competition.

“The league may be painting themselves into a very, very dark corner.”

Like my original point that's fine provided that business entity doesn't have any ties with the club meaning a deal like Judd and Visy would not and should not be approved because of Pratt's involvement with Carlton. If you allow this then there's no point in having the salary cap because teams could just sidestep it and pay players through businesses that were affiliated with the club.

The alternative view is that if a business entity wishes to engage a high profile sportsman to be the face of their product, then the player should be able to sell his image to that business, unfettered by any other rules. Similarly, given his wife is already a successful professional model, there is no way any one can make a rule denying her the right to make a living from that . The solution is actually opening it all up more, not narrowing it. TC

They've got a right to earn money but let's not kid ourselves with the belief that these third party deals are for anything other than allowing clubs to circumvent the salary cap. These deals should have been included in the TPP in the first place and the AFL is right for closing this loophole. It should be simple, deals between players and businesses who have any ties to a club should automatically be deemed part of the salary cap unless the player can prove that it had no influence in getting them to sign or re-sign with that club. I can't see any other solution because everything else is open to exploitation.

What was the Crown deal for Nathan Buckley? I don't recall it. (I grant you he is due a crown, as the undoubted King of the Midfield for over a decade) Anyway, even if there was a Crown deal (whatever it was), wasn't it ok within the rules at the time? What has it got to do with the current Visy deal with Judd, and the current AFL rules in that area? And giving players media exposure on TV footy commentating has been part of footy since at least 1959, when "World of Sport" started on HSV7. What's Channel Nine and Foxtel doing that's so bad? (Unless they're paying people who don't do anything to earn it, that is).

Takes brass to turn around and pretend this is some sort of injustice against Carlton...

Apparently half the Carlton list are Visy ambassadors.

I'm sure Visy could find a better ambassador than Mr "Chicken Wing" "Eye Gouger" Judd. The 5 year free ride is over. An absolute disgrace that it was allowed by the AFL to start with. At least they're correcting the blunder. Whilst Carlton have benefitted from effectively an extra $200-$250k p.a. in their salary cap for the last 5 years, it's still way below the $1m extra the Swans unfairly have in their cap. Hopefully Eddie can lobby the AFL to fix the Swans inequity too. Carlton and Visy are a perfect match. Visy engaged in illegal cartel practices and Carlton are serial salary cap cheats. An ambassador who performs chicken wings is suitable I suppose.

Let me explain - McGuire is being a hypocrite - the Buckley Crown deal, his employers give 3rd party deals to NRL and possibly AFL stars. Does this help>>>???

Its where the AFLPA will have an issue though. This is clearly going to deprive a player of his right to earn money. And because this was approved by the AFL before, this has larger salary cap implications than anything the Crows and Tippet did.

The whole Judd to Carlton 'deal ' stank to the high heavens from day one. Actually, most things regarding Carlton have a stench. Are you blokes only getting wind of this?

The goalposts have been moved - to where they're supposed to be. If you don't like it Juddy, I'm sure GWS can give you the money you're after.

Richard Pratt, extraordinarily successful businessman and then President of Carlton Footy Club, was a man accustomed to getting his own way and, as events subsequently revealed, was not averse to adopting creative arrangements to ensure it. No one should seriously doubt that Chris Judd's role at Visy was part of his reward for coming to Melbourne and signing with Carlton. There is also, therefore, no doubt that it should be, and always should have been, included in Carlton's salary cap. The mistake the AFL made was excusing it in the first place. Maybe they were concerned at the time about Carlton's future. After all they've been giving Judd free kicks for years.

Haven't heard of any Crown-Buckley deal, that's not to say that it's not true. Anyway, the problem with the Judd deal, is that Richard Pratt was the president of Carlton, and also controlled the Pratt-family company Visy which is providing the environmental spokesman role. Ergo, the $250K guarrenteed 'salary' was tied to Judd being a contracted Carlton player. Nobody would begrudge players earning some extra money through sponsopship, but it shouldn't be used to artificially extend your salary cap.

The Judd and Visy deal should never been allowed in the first place, Its been a thorn in the side of clubs media and the footy public since it started, Then again Demetriou has had a year not known for fairness, To name a few, his treatment of the tasmanian premier and the tassie AFL committee, The AFL'S influence on Matty Rendell's termination by the crows, Calling optus a disgusting organisation encouraging AFL fans not to use their services, Backing of Ali Fahour before the tribunal when he was found guilty without reprimand, Backing Mifsud after his racist comments about Neeld, Refusing to believe tanking existed. Amidst the Crows and Tippett saga putting an end to Judd's contract leeks desperation by the AFL trying to right a wrong, With unlimited time on finalising the tanking situation under the table deals the AFL house are going to have a very cold xmas dinner.
