Reds and Wallabies winger Digby Ioane has been stood down from Saturday night’s Super Rugby game after an alleged weekend assault at the Mount Erica Hotel in Prahran, Victoria.
Queensland Rugby Union and Ioane have agreed the player should be suspended for the match at Suncorp Stadium following his involvement in an alleged assault at a Melbourne pub.
Ioane will miss an Australian derby, with the Western Force travelling to Suncorp Stadium.
In a statement, the QRU said:
“Queensland Rugby will stand down Digby Ioane from Saturday night’s SuperRugby match against the Western Force.
“Discussions were held and all parties agreed Digby failed to demonstrate the necessary behaviours expected of a senior Reds player.
“The decision relates to the expectation on him as a senior member of the team and is not an outcome of enquiries made by Victorian Police.”

Agreed Gary. Well handled I think...certainly better than the Australian cricket team...

More to this than just this instance me thinks. Digby must have accumulated a few bad points and this is the straw in other words. Sometimes these players get a bit above themselves and need to be brought into line. Internal stuff this and well concealed from the public eye. Good job QRU.

I saw that too and id have to agree. Somtimes being pulled up on behaviour before it gets out of control can be a good thing. I was unaware of the past transgressions.

Digbys brother should realise when they are out together he has got to show restraint too.Unfortunately sport stars can attract good and bad people and you just have to walk away, just ask Zac Guildford

Pretty good explanation in today's papers - seems he'saccumulated a fairly long list of transgressions. Support the QRU on this one.

Unless he was directly involved in the initial aggression this seems a bit harsh. It seems as though we are placing standards on our rugby players that seem a bit unrealistic, I would actually question the character of a person who saw a family member get into strife and did not intervene. Players are human they are not divinity personified. I do see a case in point of making examples of people who do the wrong thing but we dont know what he actually did if anything. I suppose without further knowledge its pretty hard to have an opinion.

Just administrators looking like they are doing work and making influential decisions to justify their positions. Coach stick your neck out for your players but hey i guess it is only the force he can watch it at the Normanby.

exactly...The Erica is a very suburban corner pub is a very affluent area. Yeah it say Prahran but its not chapel St...most people would assume its in Toorak. Odd to have a fight there at all let alone at 5pm.... I have no doubt it would have been some boozed up Quins or Powerhouse memeber....:)

If you were going to rest him, why not do it anyway? RU can distinguish itself from other codes, and hopefully its a win-win result.

Bloody hell, if they're using an incident as cover that'd be rough. Surely he'd prefer a hit to his pride than his integrity.

I believ it was saturday afternoon, 540pm not am. The Mt Erica is a very nice pub, not a club or anything like that. More known for their food than party time atmosphere.

Look Diggers was probably due a rest, maybe out of the squad, maybe just going to the bench to give guys like Morahan, Toua or CFS some game time, and this incident is some nice cover. Keeping the squad rotated and not risking an injury is probably what led us here. Hopefully though the Force can be beaten, and with a bonus point, regardless of resting him.

to be fair, the other article suggested 540pm...

At 5.40am - at least QC wasn't involved, must be past his bedtime; as I think it would be for most pro rugby players in terms of recovery immediately after a match. Maybe that's the suspension reason, breach team protocol not being tucked in before midnight?

All I can imagine is that his brother got into fisticuffs and as any brother would do, Digby intervened, most likely in a protective manner. The police statement clearly said it was just between two men so he obviously didn't contribute to any violent act. What do you expect to do when a member of your family get in a potentially dangerous altercation, regardless of who started it? Stand back and watch? Hmmm... Until actual details are released implicating Digby's direct involvement I'd say he's been hard done by. Firstly by the press, then by the QRU.

It may be reasonable. I just find the wording odd, which is why I asked for clarification. Digby may deserve the suspension.

Bit of a strange one to be honest...
