Six A-League players in Socceroos squad for WCQ

By News / Wire

Six A-League players are among the 23-man Socceroos squad named on Wednesday for the World Cup qualifier against Oman in Sydney on March 26.

Coach Holger Osieck called on goalkeepers Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United) and Mat Ryan (Central Coast) plus defenders Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory), Jade North (Brisbane Roar) and Michael Thwaite (Perth Glory) plus striker Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory) from the domestic league.

Overseas-based players Tim Cahill, Mile Jedinak, Tommy Oar and Tom Rogic return to the squad for the Stadium Australia match after missing last month’s friendly against Romania.

They join such regulars as goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, midfielders Brett Holman and Mark Bresciano and defender Luke Wilkshire.

Dino Djulbic receives his second call-up after making his senior international debut at the East Asian Cup qualifiers in Hong Kong last December.

The Socceroos will be without regular captain Lucas Neill and Carl Valeri who are both serving one-match suspensions for an accumulation of yellow cards from previous matches in the qualifying tournament.

The Socceroos are in second position in Group B of the final round of the World Cup Asian qualifying tournament after a win against Iraq (2-1), draws against Oman (0-0) and Japan (1-1) and a loss against Jordan (1-2).

Oman are in fourth place in Group B after a win over Jordan (2-1), draws with Australia (0-0) and Iraq (1-1) and two losses to Japan (0-3 & 1-2).

The Socceroos are currently 37th in the FIFA world rankings whilst Oman are 105th.

Socceroos squad: Mark Bresciano, Alex Brosque, Tim Cahill, Robert Cornthwaite, Dino Djulbic, Eugene Galekovic, James Holland, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Robbie Kruse, Ryan McGowan, Matt McKay, Mark Milligan, Jade North, Tommy Oar, Tom Rogic, Mathew Ryan, Mark Schwarzer, Archie Thompson, Michael Thwaite, Luke Wilkshire, Rhys Williams, Michael Zullo.

Rumours starting to emerge on Twitter that Borussia Mönchengladbach has made a firm offer for RobbieK. Slowly, we'll see A-League lads moving to the bigger clubs in Europe. Remember, Viduka went to Celtic after his stint in Croatia; Rogic is at Celtic. Zelic went to BVB and Langerak & Amini are at BVB. Curtis Good is at Newcastle United & Leckie is at Mönchengladbach - but, both are currently out on loan. The conveyor belt will keep on churing them out.

Also Zullo is pretty much in the starting 11 for Utrecht, he has had a couple of injuries though.

Millwall are off to Wembley to play in the FA Cup semi final and Shane Lowry played a massive part in getting them there. He made an absolutely brilliant goal line clearance when Blackburn looked certain to score his morning through his reading of the game.Whips in very nice crosses and very strong on the ball but has a tendency to lump it forward when under pressure.Definatley deserves a call up though.

We are strong in the AM area - Cahill, Bresh, Holman, Rogic, Oar, Triosi all good wide or inside. What we need is a genuine finisher and a strong defence.

Mid, you keep banging on about James Troisi, he's played 5 games all season for Atalanta. One of those players who should be playing in the A-league, instead of sitting on the pine or in reserves going nowhere. Sainsbury is the best young defender in Australia, Topor Stanley best defender in A-League at present, both better than North & Cornthwaite.

There are only so many places .... for me the lucky players are North & Archie... Unlucky in the sense their form or club warrants a call up... no particular order just players pressing... Trent Sainsbury, Topor Stanly, Aron Mooy, James Troisi, Lowry, and about five others whose names don't spring to mind... I like to see us play a 4 2 3 1 set up with Bresh & Holland as the deep holding mids Rogic as the AM with Kruse and Holman on his outside ...

I don't know how well Zullo is performing so I can't comment on that IN and OUT selection but I fully 100% agree with you about Topor-Stanley IN and Jade North OUT. What more does NTS have to do??

Fuss, What you would love to see and what we will see are two completely different things. Looks like a great side but I honestly don't think HO will ever play a side like that. Until he does, I wait to be happily corrected.

That's not bad, I really think Kruse and Oar can do some damage in our three home games. If we stay tight at the back we'll be right I'd say. Judging by Holger's comments doesn't look like Rogic will start either.

@Realfootball I've studied subjects as diverse as anatomy, neurology, brain & behaviour, psychology, financial analysis, criminal law & jurisprudence. One subject I've never studied is book-keeping & have no accounting skills. But, I'm happy to admit I do not have a single creative or artistic molecule within my DNA.

What sort of starting 11 do you think we'll see? I'd like to see, considering the sort of team Holger will pick: (4-2-3-1) Schwarzer, Zullo, Williams, Djulbic (maybe?), Wilkshire, Jedinak, Bresciano, Oar, Holman, Kruse, Brosque. The super sub Cahill off the bench with Archie if needed.

Babaji has done very little since returning to the A-League and is Bulut even playing regularly? I'm all for giving young guys a chance, but we're hardly going to throw in an untried and out-of-form striker in a crucial WC qualifier just because he's young.

You have a very mechanistic, black and white view of the world, and you have to accept that it is neither a universal truth, nor necessarily shared by everyone else. You are clearly in a nuts and bolts craft profession, and I suspect you didn't go into the field as result of any kind of passion. Football is not accountancy. It is more akin to the creative enterprises, where people are driven by a passion for what they do. In these areas it is never as simple as a dollar figure. Ask Jason Culina, among others, or Del Piero.

All in the eye of the beholder, Franco. I love Italy, and have been there a number of times in different parts of the country. I can certainly see the attraction, and have looked seriously at locating to live in Syracuse for at least a couple of years. However, I was talking about players not playing first team or stuck on endlessly on the bench, not those, like Valeri, who are playing Serie B.

I disagree, better opportunity to make the top grade yes, better wages yes. But better food better lifestyle. have you ever lived in Australia?

The forward line looks ok..... as long as Robbie Kruise is ok. He is doing well in the Bundisliga and has looked two classes above and genuinely scary for our opponents so far in world cup qualifiers (bar Japan). If anything happens to him we better make sure to hold onto our paddles.

Mute argument anyway for football as a World game, the higher the bid the higher the quality of football at the club. The club looks for the player's to fit the bill & offers pay accordingly. Doubt whether any player in their right mind would knock back 100,000 a week at ManU for the equivalent per season in the A-League for job satisfaction reasons. The job satisfaction is far greater at a better level of football anyway & the added bonus of more money in the bank.

If I had the opportunity, I would much rather play Serie B, Segunda División etc. than A-League. Better wage, better food and overall a far better lifestyle.
