Osieck names Socceroos training squad ahead of qualifiers

By The Roar / Editor

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck has selected 12 Australian-based players to participate in a training camp ahead of next month’s crucial 2014 World Cup Qualifiers.

Beginning on Monday at Central Coast Mariners’ academy base in Tuggerah, the camp will be for A-League players to get back into training following the conclusion of the regular season and finals.

It will run concurrently with a Young Socceroos training camp, as the U-20 national side prepares for the U-20 World Cup, to be held in Turkey in June and July.

Osieck said the camp would serve as an opportunity for the players to get back toward the fitness level of their overseas-based teammates.

“We currently have two groups of players, those that are still playing in their domestic leagues and those from Australia that are in their off-season,” said Osieck.

“The purpose of this training camp is to assess the physical standard of the players out of season and get them to a similar level compared to the other players.”

With many of the senior members of the Socceroos coming off physically taxing European seasons, the need for a strong squad will be vital for Osieck’s men and next week’s camp will serve as an important step in preparation for meeting Jordan, Iraq and Japan in June.

Not as if he'll pick the younger ones in the WCQ's. If in the unlikely event he does he'll probably blame them for the defeat(s).

He is actually, haha. Probably should amend my original statement: "Satora was playing a lot too, before picking up a season ending injury"...

Isn't Sarota out long term with an ACL reconstruction?

Couldn't agree more JB almost mainly fullbacks that squad, goals will be hard to come by ,there should've been an even greater emphasis on offense and offensive players. It could possibly get to a point where their unwatchable, if not now ?.

I like the look of that 11. Don't think we have a ghost's hope of seeing it though. Too bold, too logical for Holger.

Zullo has played 13 games, 7 off the bench. Recently he's got a decent-ish run. Sarota is playing a lot too, as is Lowry, Jedinak and Holland are both first-team regulars. After that, it gets sketchier- Ruka started his first game in almost 6 months a week or two back, Davidson hasn't played at all for Heracles recently. While he hasn't played much yet, Rogic seems like he's in favour with Lennon at Celtic. Rhys Williams has played 90 minutes consistently since he came back from injury. Leckie's played 25 games and scored 4 goals on loan to FSV Frankfurt, so that's promising. One who I'd really like to get a call-up would be Mass Luongo from Tottenham, he's on loan at Swindon and doing very well there, can't see it happening though.

Ah, I see, sorry. Was just thrown off by the Rogic in central midfield thing. Wouldn't it be nice if Holger would play a formation with a modicum of intelligence.

has zullo played much? of the overseas lot it seems oar, holland and kruse are doing really well and the rest have a lot of ups and downs with respect to playing time, even in lower divisions. i am hoping ibini and ryan and sainsbury get good gigs overseas if they dont (and they wont) stay.

What's that, 4-2-1-1-2? That's one I haven't seen before. For me: Schwarzer Wilkshire - Williams - Lowry - Zullo Milligan - Mooy Kruse - Rogic - Oar Cahill, I guess? Goddamn, but we need a decent striker.

I'm confused by this, so this is half the squad before the European half gets announced? If so we can work on the assumption that there'll be virtually no defenders coming from Europe I guess. Galekovic has probably come in as Ryan's in France, and if Ibini wasn't too you'd hope he'd be there. Can't wait for the day where Lowry/Sainsbury/McGowan starts in defence over Neill/Thwaite/North, guess it won't be anytime soon. Why does it have Lucas Neill down as 'uncontracted'? Did I miss something?

Yeah we do look decent for defenders based on that list... And as much as i like Duke, it is slightly worrying we dont have any other obvious strikers he'd want to look at as well as him. But then looking at where our goals have been coming from...explains all the defenders ;)
