Kevin Sheedy sticks by comments

By Rob Forsaith / Wire

Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy says he meant nothing untoward by Sunday’s comments in which he described Western Sydney Wanderers’ A-League success as getting a leg-up from the “immigration department”.

While pondering the crowd of just 5830 that turned up to see the Giants against Adelaide, the lowest at a regular-season AFL match since Fitzroy’s final year of existence in 1996, Sheedy suggested soccer in Sydney had a distinct advantage.

“We don’t have the recruiting officer called the immigration department, recruiting fans for Western Sydney Wanderers. We don’t have that on our side,” he said.

His comments triggered a Twitter backlash.

Sheedy was branded a “muppet” by Wellington Phoenix’s Sydney-born captain Andrew Durante, labelled a disgrace by soccer pundit Craig Foster and plenty worse by a plethora of fans.

It came just over two weeks after Sheedy met with the immigration department in Canberra, discussing the concept of his side’s round-19 clash with Melbourne becoming an iconic game to celebrate diversity.

Sheedy, an anti-racism campaigner who has worked to improve indigenous-player pathways in his 29-year coaching career, on Monday stuck by his comments while looking to add context and perspective.

“No, no, no. Not at all (do I wish I didn’t say that). It’s a throwaway line to make sure that everybody understands that is why soccer can get such a quick crowd,” Sheedy said in Sydney.

“And of course, quite amazingly why it’s taken so long to put another (A-League) team in the west, because they’ve got an enormous fan base there.

“… When I said the immigration department was one of the best recruiting agencies for soccer, well I didn’t mean anything untoward by that. But it’s a fact.”

In a wide-ranging press conference that covered the plight of indigenous Australians and the nation’s immigration policy, Sheedy talked of the barriers he felt he’d broken down regarding sport and race – adding that: “I don’t think indigenous people would call me a racist”.

The 65-year-old suggested he was thick-skinned enough to cope with the abuse that has been directed his way on social media.

“Racist is a pretty broad term. But people have their opinions,” the four-time premiership coach said.

“Our job is to get out there and get on the front foot, withstanding – not to hurt anyone’s feelings.

“But I think people just get a bit touchy on certain things, and I’m not touchy in that area at all.”

Another clanger from Titus: "Only 9k watching the AFL monday night match in Sydney, even for Sydney that is bad" Why would a game not featuring a Sydney team (St K vs Carl), attract big TV ratings in Sydney? The *Sydney* game vs Hawthorn got 622k on Ch7, 167k on Fox and... 87k on 7mate in Sydney alone. That's more than the average national figures for the ALeague...so it's hardly doom and gloom for the AFL. A relevant comparison for Titus, would be to ask for the Sydney ratings for Adel Utd v Melb.Hrt. But he can't.

Jimbo, I suspect that figure would be a lot higher, as it has been 'averaged out', when we know that the east and north watch way more AFL than the west and south, therefore it can be assumed the figure would be 50% higher as with most Swans games.

I feel as if I am in a different dimension and the tables have turned for a day. Maybe you understand how A-League fans feel when they take their family to a game with a 23k crowd average like Victory, and have a great time, but every Monday the papers splash "crowd violence" and "hooligans" across the front page, leaving us bewildered. So it seems it's OK and just a few bad eggs for footie, but small trouble at A-league is hooliganism and violence.

Their average home crowd is 5,800 (if you believe that figure) and WSW are an embarrassment to the AFL and in particular one K Sheedy. He is trying to deflect from the rubbish that his team serves up weekly. He must be stunned that the 'Game that made Australia" attracts so little interest from the region it purports to represent. The only foreign sport in Western Sydenee is Aussie Rules. Perhaps a little more humility from Sheedy, the AFL and its media might actually start to win a bit of support from the people of the west.

No, it was actually the other way around. And that's why Alex resigned last week. He realised after he met Sheeds that soccer is actually rubbish compared to Aussie Rules. ;-)

Making a comment about immigrants is not in itself being racist, xenophobic or divisive. There was no specific comment made other than an inference that new arrivals to Australia are pretty likely to be followers of soccer well ahead of Aust football....same could be suggested for athletics or basketball. Seems to me a bit of a joke....remember those? Before social media allowed agenda driven mortication. Craig Foster is the one trying to twist this into something more sinister. Or - just trying to gain his own little nit of attention in a crowded sporting marketplace dominated by AFL, NRL, EPL,ACC, ARU & ASADA.

Wrong - Clive closed off half the stadium and let them in for free if I remember. GC won a few games - GWS hasnt won any this year - it was Mothers Day - their average crowd home crowd this year is 10K which is about average for the cellar dwellers in RL in Sydney. Thats what you get for having churlish owners ....

Swans V Hawthorn got 87k on saturday night FTA in Sydney. Add in fox ratings, that is OK. Swans were getting beaten as well.

I was raised in a very multi-cultural area where migrant children played footy and soccer but the round ball game was almost synonomous with there nationhood. Most of the soccer teams in the state league represented the various nationalities that migrated to Australia such as South Melbourne Hellas or Juventus. This was not always a good thing as national rivalries caused trouble in the stands at many matches.IMO the establishment of the A-league in soccer is the best advancement in Sport i have seen in this country the teams are universal ,the fans love it and moving the season to the summer months was brilliant.Sheedy should reflect on his comments and realise soccer is not wogball as his comments imply.Who is to say what the demographics of WSW or indeed any soccer team are i would imagine with the crowds they get a good proportion of the supporters would be Australian born.Sheedy should be man enough to retract the comment and attend WSW training and become a member to show the sporting public he has learnt from the experience.

@Australian Rules Did you read this comment: This perception is supported by masking low junior club numbers with Auskick numbers (Club, School and Community Auskick) and school program numbers. So, yes, AFL probably has paid to have AFL played in schools, which is why they have a 17 junior clubs. When I was at school, our inter-school sporting competition involved 12 clubs (with multiple age-group teams for multiple sports).

FIUL, Your logic suggests one too many headers but I digress - sure you aint Craig Foster Foster playing the victim - Note the last 6 words - did he get an invite or not and wouldnt endear himself to get another one if I were the organisers.... "Here’s the reason why Sheedy’s inevitable backtracking means nothing to me, because I’ve seen him do this before, a few years ago at a speaking engagement in Perth. You know the ones: where someone from cricket, AFL and rugby all argue for their game. Les Murray couldn’t make it and I was the token ‘soccer’ guy. "

@Nomenclature "Foxtel which 40 % of Sydney households have." 1. 100% of households have FTA TV in SYD 2. 40% of households (ALLEGEDLY) have Foxtel in SYD What evidence is there that people, who have Foxtel in SYD, are watching AFL in higher numbers than people, who have FTA TV? And, logic suggests that the majority of people, who have Foxtel in SYD, will watch NRL rather than AFL In the same way, logic suggests that the majority of people, who have Foxtel in MEL, ADE & PER, will watch AFL rather than NRL.

Fussball the 11% said they had an interest which means they watch it occasionally or have their kids play it or whatever. Maybe they watch at the pub. 40% of h/H follow RL but doesnt mean 1.6M people in Sydney watch every game... You being dishonest again talk about 7 figures when the games are also on Foxtel which 40 % of Sydney households have.

@Nomenclature "Mothers day – AFL fans do have mothers ." So, AFL fans in Sydney celebrated Mother's Day on Monday; not Sunday - I wonder why? Maybe all the AFL fans in Sydney went to watch GWS on Sunday & made up for it by giving 100% attention to their Mothers on Monday. Interesting times in Sydney.
