Is Gallen brave or just plain stupid?

By Trent Johnston / Roar Rookie

It is said Paul Gallen stood up for his team on Wednesday night in giving Nate Myles the old ‘one-two’. Was this brave or was it the ultimate act of stupidity?

>>The Roar Origin special: Ryan and Brett’s player rankings

Gallen was quoted afterwards as saying that someone needed to step up and stand up to him.

Well good on you Paul but I’m sorry but no-one cares if Nate Myles pulled your leg or twisted your knee earlier in this match, let alone a couple of years ago.

At the time of this, the match was nearing half time and NSW were up 14-0. Yes, your team was well on top and in control.

Your side was ready to go into half-time and regroup for more of the same. Even the most parochial NSW fan admits he should have at least been sin-binned and where would this have left you?

There was no upside to this unprovoked attack other than an individual trying to seek some sort of personal revenge.

Paul Gallen Nate Myles fight

Even without any further punishment, all it did was give Queensland one last chance in attack to conclude the half and attempt to wake the sleeping dog.

If the referees had ruled as most think they should have, I’m sure all the articles today would have been about how stupid and selfish Gallen was.

This is not a first offence for him. NSW were on top in every area except leadership. Let’s just hope that Gallen’s actions don’t end up deciding the series…

Myles took a stiff arm, two punches to the face and an upper cut, and stayed on his feet. Does not say much for Gallens hitting power.

As usual this is all NSW can resort to. Grubby tactics. Like Trent Barrett taking out Inglis a few years back. Thaiday only shoves players as the third man in. Big deal, happens nearly every NRL match. If it was Myles hitting Gallen, you can bet he would have been sent. Luke O'Donnell spear tackled, head butted, then punched QLD players all in the space of 60 seconds in 2008 or 2009 and stayed on the field. So Thug Gallen was always going to stay there. What was going on in Cronulla when Gallen and Bird were developed into the whining grubs they are?

I'll nail my colours to the mast. I was born in Qld. I live in Sthn NSW. I support Qld. I LOVE Rugby League. I played 8 years of League in between AFL & Soccer depending on where we were posted & ONE year of Rugby Union. I much prefer League as entertainment, but Union as a game. My 3 Sons all love & play Union so perforce I've gotten more & more involved in their sport until now I Manage, Administer & Referee in Junior Rugby. One thing I can tell you for certain, throw a punch (& get caught) in Rugby & you are off - Red Card, automatic suspension. There were 3 boys Red-Carded last week at our grounds - an U16 (who will be dealt with as well by our internal Judiciary) & 2 U15's, 1 of ours, 1 of theirs. Both codes are a MAN'S game, but a real man doesn't hit another man when he's not ready.

I'm a nsw supporter and Gallen was stupid and extremely selfish to give QLd a great chance of scoring just before half time, and i can certainly understand the criticism of him throwing the punches but of course in that situation there are three possibilities. Nothing happens, he throws the first punch or if he doesn't he cops a punch. What i can't handle is Gordon Tallis bagging him when Gordie has always been the first to punch someone unexpectedly and there are more victims than Ben Ross. Of course when he unexpectedly punched the pommie in a test thirty thousand times, the pommie came out on top with one good punch. The pommie forward said his wife hits him harder when he comes home late from the pub. Yes Gordie other people can criticise Gallen but not you.

Positive, Take a look at what your children are watching, and I'll guarantee that they'll see more violence in an hour of television than they do in tens of hours of rugby league, not to mention all of the hip-gyrating-tartlets doing their best porno impressions passed off as "music video'. What you have to remember, old chap, is that your kids live in the real world. The only question you have to ask is how long you're going to shield them from it, and what you're going to do to teach them right and wrong when they see it. Nobody likes what Gallen did. Get a grip. If you think that this sort of behaviour is unique to rugby league, you're more naive than your children. Have you, by any chance, actually watched a rugby match lately?

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID From what I saw it was just a act of thuggery from Gallen and he should have been sent off and got more then he got as a penalty. Also Gallen was asked the question after the game about the incident and his words were," WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FIELD STAYS ON THE FIELD", well he not only has a sort fuse, he also has a short memory with his response to the charge and media statements and on TV league shows. Take it on the chin son and be thankful you only got 1 week and get your misses to sew pockets in your footy shorts for game 2 and keep your fists in them. It does not matter what game is played, club, state, or test, anyone that throws a punch," OFF", if it was a AFL game Gallen would have got 10 weeks. But, I do agree with Gallen, the NRL should not be showing promo's to promote any game of League that shows a punch up on the field and State of Origin seems to be their main stint, if they are going to charge players for doing so, that shows how hypocritical the NRL are. DOUBLE STANDARDS. To finish off, I think fighting on the field is a sign of WEAKNESS. "GO THE BLUES"

Myles should have been sent off. Anybody that leads with the head and brutally attacks Gallens fists the way he did is an absolute monster. In all seriousness though, anybody lauding Gallens fisticuffs is a joke! If gallen can throw 5-7 unguarded punches and not put a bloke down, he should be an absolute laughing stock of his fans. Myles showed who is man and who is mouse.

The best part is that NSW weren't squealing about the refereeing after the game as per normal. And now that rugby league officially condones thuggery we can expect to see the squealing resume when they get done over in game two. I don't blame Gallen. Listen to him talk and the light is on but nobody is at home. A perfect fit for NSW the state of convicts and corruption.

Union has exactly the same issues as league pr, just look at what happened in nz recently - 15 year old at training punched and killed. The physical contact and the ideal of masculinity in rugby mean that fights are almost a certainty. When I was at school we had a 'one punch' death on the field in our local rep rugby union comp. A few years later three boys were on trial for murder for beating up a guy at the pub (rugby union 'stars'). Of course alcohol is petrol on flames when it comes to young boys/men and violence. Iam thankful I got through in one piece - I worry for my sons now.

Gallen and Myles are BOTH dirty. It shouldn't have happened but then what do people expect? I look at the refs. If they didn't want this type of thing happen then they wouldn't allow all the nonsense in the tackles. These guys are playing a physical sport in high pressure situations and every now and then you are going to have a blue but the officials can do a lot more and crack down on the ridiculous stupid niggle that goes on in most tackles. If they are going to be more lenient in Origin you will continue to have these flare ups.

Just wait until he starts drinking/reaches 15 to 16. That is where your son's judgement will start to be tested.

Stupid but it was a highlight of the game. How he stayed on is a mystery but Myles does use his head in tackles to deliberately injure players. Gallen just had enough great work.

Really ? You let tv raise your kids ? Take some responsibilty yourself. Ive been watchin Origin for as long as i can remeber and yelling smash them at the TV when the Blues give it to the toads and my son has never been in a fight on the footy field, Although plenty do its just what happens in an aggresive contact sport between players wanting to win or backing up thier mates. Seriously if this upsets you that much stick to watching your wife play netball.
