Michael Clarke resigns as selector

By The Roar / Editor

Fairfax is reporting that Michael Clarke has resigned as an Australian selector following Cricket Australia’s coaching shake-up which has seen Mickey Arthur sacked.

The coaching restructure is set to be confirmed with a press conference tonight in Bristol, UK, to be attended by CA boss James Sutherland and team performance manager Pat Howard.

The decision to grant the captain and coach selection powers was a key recommendation of the Argus review in 2011, and one that has proven to be roundly unpopular, particularly the captain’s role.

It is not a common practice in other professional sports.

Clarke has been part of the selection panel that has made tough and controversial decisions – one of which was the omission of Brad Haddin from the Test team, before he was re-drafted as vice-captain ahead of the Ashes.

The new coach of the Australian side is set to be Darren Lehmann. It is unclear at this stage if he will retain a say in selections.

The Australian team is due to assemble on Monday following the failed Champions Trophy campaign for its first tour match against Somerset, which starts on Wednesday.

Yes but Steve Rixon remains.....he has been M Clarkes' mentor for many many years and probably that is reason he got his current coaching role ( fielding and spin...not bad for an ex wicketkeeper). Agree with Ian Healy there is need to clean house as regards coaching support staff . If Clarke needs someone to hold his hand he is not the man for the job.

It seems Cricket Australia reads Roar and takes notice of the helpful advice it gets.

Listening to the live presser and I've got to say, James Sutherland has to go. "This isn't about me..." yeah sorry champ, it is.

Maybe he doesn't want to be the one who has to sack his best mates?

If Australia is trounced in the Ashes, with it being on live tv free to air I just cannot believe Clarke will still be captain. It is like Gideon Haigh said today, Cricket Australia seems to pick sides for 'marketability over performance'.

Good move, he seems to be a divisive character pup.

hopefully some aussie mongrel will be bashed into this squad, well the batsmen, and some good old skippy hard man tactics will be applied with selection, training, staying in for a quiet nite, and fighting hard for your national side. like aussie cricket used to be....

Best day in Aus cricket in a long time. Australians should coach Australians, end of story! Captains should captain teams picked by selectors, end of story! Perfect timing if you ask me. England lulled into a false sense of security and then BANG! Boof Lehman brings back what went missing after that Indian series (Monkeygate). That was the day Aus cricket died. We had all the so called experts, including that $@$&$ Roebuck calling the team unsportsmanlike and the decline started. Bring back the underdog and watch them growl! Game on England

Once Mr Arthur went so did Mr Clarke's main support buddy it was inevitable that Mr Clarke would find his own position untenable -I have to say it says a lot about Mr Clarke's people skills also the fact thst Mr Clarke never msde a clean breast and clear apology for his dustup with Simon Katich has been like an albatross around his neck the whole of his career in the national team

If Watson was the tipping point, god help the side.If the bloke is not injured,he is walking off the field after being dismissed cheaply, again, with a face a three year old makes when they are told no wiggles tonight.Stuart Law tried to harden him up in his early days at the Bulls but he couldnt handle it and ran away to Tassie.Sadly there are too many prima donna's like him in the batting department -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Siler s ..would love to see S Waugh involved for sure ...just never seems to eventuate ...my take is he has several life long detractors who still have sway ...I wouldn't mention who but not hard to work out
