Football World Cup: Australia's Last Frontier

By SuperEel22 / Roar Guru

So with Australia having successfully qualified for their third consecutive football World Cup, how much longer do we have to wait for it to visit down under?

Australia has hosted practically every sporting event it can get it’s hands on. The Commonwealth Games have been here a record five times.

Australia has hosted the summer Olympics twice and four Rugby League World Cups. Throw in a cricket World Cup (soon to be two) as well as two Rugby Union World Cups and you have to ask what hasn’t Australia hosted?

Quite simply it hasn’t hosted the Football World Cup. The world’s most supported and watched event.

As to how Australia could be overlooked by FIFA in favour of Qatar is beyond me. Australia has the facilities and capability of hosting the tournament.

You have to ask yourself which other countries can boast a list of international sporting events such as the one above.

Australia will eventually host a Football World Cup. Hopefully, it will be in my lifetime.

The day it is announced that Australia is to host the World Cup, that will be the day Australia confirms it’s place as the sports capital of the world.

Outraged spectators in northern Brazil stoned football referee Otavio da Silva to death and hacked up his body, after he stabbed a player, who died on his way to hospital. Police say the incident happened when the referee red-carded 30-year-old player Josenir Abreu from a game. The two quarrelled and got into a fist fight, then Silva stabbed Abreu. According to the Maranhao State Public Safety Department fans got to the field and decapitated the referee, then dismembered his body. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************* Does Australia want this type of behaviour Local news reports say the angry mob stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field. Police have arrested a 27-year-old man in the ongoing investigation. "We will identify and hold accountable all those involved in this incident. One crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not correspond with state law," police spokesman Valter Costa told reporters. The police are reportedly looking for two more suspects. The incident took place with a backdrop of Brazil facing mounting pressure to show it is a safe place before 12 cities host the 2014 World Cup and the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. In June, Brazil was swept by the protests partly against the spending in preparation for the World Cup, as well as against the level of corruption.

How embarrassing would it be if Australia won the right to host the cup and we didn't qualify

The 2018/2022 World Cup bid was the bid we had to have. Next time, whenever that might be, we might actually commit to footballs future with our own stadiums and infrastructure. If we don't then we will be waiting even longer.

Yes it will - unlike the huge internal market that NFL and Cricket represent in the US and India respectively - the AUstralian domestic markey is much, much more fragile for a long list of social, economic and demographic reasons. It is a long hall - but Australia will be a football nation.

I will say that Australia now has a member in the FIFA Executive council with Moya Dodd we now have the first start in gaining influence in FIFA. although it will be a long road before we get to host it though.

This old chestnut again... For those who say we aren't up to it... has everyone forgotten the technical reports which came out a few weeks before the WC 2018/2022 vote/announcement? We were top of the table in pretty much every area. The question isn't whether we can host a World Cup. The question is whether we can win a bid for a World Cup. In other words, FIFA politics. The AFL/NRL and the toxic media would like to think they were responsible in "defending" Australia from the wogball invasion, but to be honest, although they piss off a lot of us, I don't think anyone outside our borders actually cared.

I dont think we need the world cup in Australia. Having it in our backyard is fine by me. Remember 2002! Australia wasnt even involved and it blew every other event out of the water during months of June/july. I dont care where. China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand , Tahiti! All fine by me.

with a population double Sydney/Melbourne they can justify having specialised stadiums for each sport. Twickenham for Rugby, Lords for Cricket, Wimbledon for Tennis and everything for Football!

Australia will never be a football nation. Too much competition from AFL and Rugby League. However, if the world cup qualifiers are anything to go by, the games will be well supported. ANZ was sold out for a qualifier. It would be packed to the rafters if we played an actual world cup there. Both the match against Man Utd and the match against Liverpool FC have sold out. So I wouldn't be too worried in terms of crowd support.

I listed those competitions to prove a point. Australia has hosted practically everything they can. There is barely a country that can say they have hosted that many international events. Unfortunately Australia is too honest to send the odd brown paper bag the way of Sepp Blatter.

Technically yes, but what they have implemented is a system whereby a nation cannot bid for a World Cup if their confederation has hosted or will host either of the preceding two i.e. Qatar have 2022 so no Asian nation (including Australia) can bid until 2030 at least. What this means in reality is, across two three-Cup cycles (i.e. six WCs), Europe will probably get two, South America will have 1-2 and the other 2-3 will be given to other confderations e.g. Japan, Korea, USA, Australia (in our dreams). FIFA would have implemented this quasi-rotational policy to ensure that one in three WCs is in Europe - good for the viewing schedules, you see - and plenty of the others can/will be in the Americas (same reason).

FIFA has stated any bids for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups won't kick off before 2019 It has also stated their preference is to take the game to new country's where there will be a legacy for the game. As the old saying goes never say never

Does "region" necessarily mean "confederation"?

2 points. 1. We should never bid for a world cup again until we get a guarantee like in all other previous tournaments that the legacy of the newly built stadiums is for the use of Football. Australia's 2022 bid had most of the damn stadiums going back to the AFL. 2. Australia/Melbounre will never ever be any sports capital of the world while London stands. The number of events/sports it hosts and stadiums it has truly overwhelms any other contender.
