How to fix golden point in the NRL

By blakebirt / Roar Rookie

Golden point has been a hot topic in rugby league circles for years. Some love it the way it is and others want to scrap it altogether.

One small tweak could make a big difference to the way golden point is played while giving players, coaches and fans a more definitive result.

Brett Morris’ match-winning try for the Dragons last weekend was an exhilarating way to end the match. St George Illawarra showed great composure under pressure to spread the ball wide and secure a famous victory.

That is the way golden point should be played. Rather than trundling up the middle of the park before taking a pot shot from 30 metres out, teams should be forced to take risks to secure the valuable two points.

After slogging it out for 80 minutes, the teams deserve a proper finish to the match. An ideal solution would involve replacing golden point with golden try.

If a team manages to break their opponents down and storm over for a four-pointer, then by all means, end the game and pat the try scorer on the back.

But if a drop goal is slotted, play should continue for the allocated ten minutes. By defending their line and holding on to a slender one-point lead, that team has completely earned their win.

The NRL is devaluing attacking play by continuing with the flawed golden point system.

Implementing golden try would ensure the better team won, rather than deciding the game on a coin toss.

If you just took away golden point all together, the last 10 mins would be played like it was golden point but it would mean both teams still have the chance to win. Much better soloution

Why not play 80 minutes and the winner gets two points and if it is a draw, both teams get 1 point each? In an elimination match, teams play an extra two 5 minute halves and the team leading at the end wins. If it is still a draw, then play again with 5 minute halves with Golden Try deciding the match.

That would mean that a victory in normal time gives you 3 points, right?

I think leave the points how they are. Option 1 is good but will become too confusing for people working out where their team is at (You have to remember that some of the fans of the game come from NSW, and the education system down there is iffy at best) and option two rewards the same points for a loss as a draw in extra time, which doesn't work I don't think. If you are going to have extra time, then to the victors go the splendours. The draw between Melb. and Manly was a great example. It went through extra time and still couldn't be worked out so they get a point a piece.

Really Ian, Morris of St George at last golden point win, scored the winning try, by actually running the ball.Anycase some field goals kicked on 3rd tackle or 4th tackle. More than just looking at the golden point issue,I would reduce the number of points for tries scored by bombs,to reduce their frequency.

I'm not convinced golden try would make much difference. Instead of 5 hitups and a shot at field goal it would become 5 hitups then bombs away.

Gus said it years ago I think if a draw after full time both teams get 1 point but the team that wins the extra time "thing" gets 2 points. Give the teams who play to the 80 min mark get some thing out the game

I agree with Jay C 10 minutes of extra time Penalties and field goals just get added to the scoreline but a try ends the game As for points perhaps we should consider going to - 4 points - win 3 points - extra time win 2 points - extra time draw 1 point - extra time loss 0 points - loss or 2 points - win in regular or extra time 1 point - loss in extra time or a draw in extra time 0 points - loss in regular time If you take option 2 then the ladder will remain closer together and the loser in extra time won't be as punished

Edge of your seat? Do you mean watching two teams battle their guts out to earn a valuable premiership point apiece then one of them lose it in a fluke extra time. Imagine the excitement if it was decided on a coin toss - could be built up to a crescendo - Robot Tom (fleecing punters for 4 generations) could produce his double header, (2 minutes of ads) Gould could toss it (2 minutes of ads) and Bra Filler could call; although he'd probably call "arms" or "legs" rather than "'ead" or "tais"! (2 minutes of ads) then Rabbits declaring the result with Joie Arew Joss looking on. Rivetting crap; may as well watch The Blockheads, or The Worst Voice or Mary's Last Visit to the Stove or some other American Sh#tcom!

GP has not had any effect on crowds, revenue, injuries. It has reduced the number of draws which is fine by me and gives us a little more edge-of-your-seat football.

I personally love the Golden Point discussion. - NOT. There's no shame in drawing a match. In regular games it doesn't matter. Obviously in sudden death finals games you need a result. But first scorer is stupid. It can only be fair with a time factor attatched to it. Regardless of the manner in scoring those points. A draw is a result people. But it isn't sexy enough for the media.

Yeah exactly mate, a drop goal is still good enough to give a team the lead, but not enough to end the game. If no-one scores a try after 10 then it should count as the deciding factor, but there's no way it ends the game.

Why not play 5 minutes each way and the team with the most points after the extra ten minutes wins, in finals games make it ten eachway, that's how it used to be but obviously that method was to simple.
