Ferguson: poison ivy in footy boots

By Tim Prentice / Expert

I have always liked watching Blake Ferguson play football. Who doesn’t? He’s a rare talent who can, and often does, perform on-field football miracles.

Yours truly has been a fan from the first time I saw him in a first grade jumper with Cronulla – this guy can make things happen when the pause button looks to be jammed ‘on.’

But, in recent weeks, I have seen more than enough of BF. He has asked the Canberra Raiders for an exit pass at the very time when he should be seeking a long term contract and some sort of stability in his sporting and personal life.

I do not know him. Never had the chance to meet him.

And in many, many, ways I am glad I haven’t.

To me, he is trash in football boots. A human zero who rates no-one but himself and is out – yet again – to find a new benefactor/sucker to pour mega-dollars into his bank account merely for the honour of having his ‘name’ on their books.

Ferguson can play football. No doubt about that, never has been. He has all the hallmarks of a world-class league centre/winger/fullback.

But it is never about the club he represents – nor his teammates.

It all about Blake Ferguson. If ego isn’t a dirty word, then the name of Blake Ferguson is damn close to being filthy.

He left the Cronulla Sharks several years ago because he wanted to play for a club “capable of winning a premiership.”

He chose to play for the Raiders and from there, he has starred at the right times to represent NSW and Australia.

Suddenly, he wants out of his Canberra contract because Dave Furner is no longer coach.

This young man has been involved in all manner of off-field havoc as a Raiders’ player and all of a sudden wants to pack his bags and leave for greener pastures. Why? Has his security blanket (Furner) been removed and the rails-runs will evaporate?

Does he think the Raiders can’t win a comp in the near future? Is there another unsuspecting club out there prepared to take him on for mega-bucks, and cop the resultant baggage?

I have had more than enough of Blake Ferguson. To me, he is league’s equivalent of poison ivy.

He bobs up all too frequently on Facebook and Twitter, which might well be called ego-alleys for would-be’s-if-they-could-be. He is seen in all of the wrong places, and at grossly inappropriate times.

This guy, seemingly, never thinks.

It is always about him: Blake Ferguson.

But what has he ever achieved? Is he a genuine superstar? Well, not yet. Not by a long stretch.

We hear that Cronulla players, such as Paul Gallen and Todd Carney, want him at the Sharks.

OK, Ferguson is a good, potentially very good footballer but surely, this beleaguered club can well do without his type of baggage.

Personally, I would love to see all 16 NRL clubs turn their backs on this big-headed trouble-maker and let him wallow about in Limbo, wondering why he is being treated like a leper.

The Sydney Swans have a famous ‘No-Dickheads’ policy. It works brilliantly for the reigning AFL premiers.

Perhaps rugby league should turn a collective cold shoulder on Blake ‘Bighead’ Ferguson.

They would all be better off without his ilk.

I don't think you need to be charged with a crime to be considered trash.

It seems common knowledge that despite Ferguson signing a multi-year contract extension, he now wants out of Canberra, and is being openly wooed by Cronulla (and probably others too). Perhaps Ferguson is just dumb enough to think that the best way to get a contract release is by repeatedly breaching his contract's behavioural clauses. If this is true, then the NRL should step in and de-register him again, this time for at least 2 years. Make the bloke earn a real living for a while. He might return with a bit of perpective about the very privileged life he has at present.

'I do not know him. Never had the chance to meet him.' Maybe think twice before labelling someone you've never met - let alone taken into consideration the fact that theyre possibly going through things you have no idea about - trash.

I think he's a Wellington boy, so Canberra would be too small for him.

Careful, someone will call you out for having no compassion (but you're 100% right). Dugan (on $600,000 pa) painted a part of a room, and he got into the Telegraph as a saint (pardon the pun). Just a few weeks ago Blake "didn't care about money, just happiness" - and it made the Tele. Why don't they report on some selfless people for a change? These guys have no idea what responsibility is. Someone wants them to do something they don't like (such as turn up to training, not drink while in rehab, be in the same City as your team when they're playing etc), so they want out of the club and people that have done so much for them. Homesick - just leave. Are they men or mice?

Looks like Ferguson is gone from the raiders. The raiders need to change their whole outlook on who they now sign up, and stop recruiting young players. Bring them through the system and then let them go to other clubs, dont spend any more than they have to on juniors, and start buying matured players. Anyhow, nothing to see here. Hope the next club who gets Fergo falls apart as well, stay away from the Broncos fergo.

I was not saying to let them get away with what they are doing, all i am saying is give them as many chances as we can afford, because sooner or later they come good, and as i said, one saved is worth it. Andy above has given me a good belting as well. I have learned my lesson, i wont say anything bad about any other club ever again. ....... ... .. . . . . hehe

I disagree. I don't like Blake Ferguson but to call only call him "trash" is plain wrong. Russell Crowe has a history of drunken thuggery and brawls and he is twice Ferguson's age. If Ferguson is trash, then so are many, many others in rugby league. Let's treat them all the same and stop playing favourites.

Trying to do a gyno exam in a pub is a crime, given his lack of a medical license. I'd love the man to grow the fXXk up and stay at the Raiders, but he seems to have chosen his path. Seriously, has anyone ever taken him off to see a Psychiatrist? He displays some Bipolar tendencies (he's manic most of the time), and he must be on the Autism spectrum. Maybe with a bit of Lithium in him, he'll come back to earth and see how the rest of the world (bar guys like Carney and Dugan), see him. Fergo has been in constant trouble, maybe some legal chemicals can help. Unlike Dugan, he has always put in 100% when he puts the lime green jumper on. Like Dugan did, he is now totally disrespecting his teammates and fans, so if he is in need of some mental health assistance, can someone please make sure he gets it? Depression and being an Indigenous player have been focuses of the NRL for some time, so can someone please grab him before his life comes crashing down? Do it soon, fix him, and he can play again at some point in time.
