Australian rugby fans deserve better

By Two Eyed Cyclop / Roar Guru

Over the last few years I have read and written numerous posts lamenting the lack of objectivity, quality and substance in the local premier rugby TV program in Australia, Rugby HQ or its predecessor, The Rugby Club.

Unfortunately this tends to spill over into match days, and when the option is not there to switch to other commentary teams, it rather spoils my enjoyment. No let’s not mince words, it downright ruins it.

As I pay good money to Fox for my sport package, and I expect a large proportion of it goes towards paying these individuals their not inconsiderable retainers, I’m entitled to this rant.

I will start with some general points and get down to individuals as we progress.

Firstly, the program is not a sitcom. Apart from Sean Maloney’s little segment (that I do find amusing) and a bit of light relief, the remainder is supposed to be an in-depth analysis of past and forthcoming games, some ‘worthwhile’ news of the local and our SANZAR partners’ scene and anything noteworthy beyond the southern hemisphere.

What I don’t want is idle chit-chat, pies smashed into players’ faces, silly quizzes between players, platitudes and generally telling me what is obvious to any 12 year old.

I want you to challenge my knowledge and enlighten me on matters that, being your average watcher, are beyond my understanding.

Did anybody see Izzy’s expression when asked in the last show – “When you got your intercept try, what did you see in Israel Dagg’s eyes?”

What? How could anybody answer such an idiotic question without sounding like a fool. ‘Unrequited love and everlasting affection’ would have been a good sarcastic answer.

It is much easier to just turn up, fill the time with ridiculous, idle and non-relevant chit chat and generalisations, collect your fees and fly back home, business class I expect.

It is a lot harder to research your subject, present succinct and intelligent points, delve into areas outside your comfort zone and challenge and educate us.

Ask the hard questions of your guests, and when one of you criticises managers, players and officials, make sure you front up when they appear in person on your show to at least allow them the opportunity to respond to your barbs.

Too often when the above person is on the program, the criticising panellist is nowhere to be seen. Greg Martin and Robbie Deans would be a classic example (and please let’s not get into the rights and wrongs of the Deans era, this is not the point of this article).

To sum it up I would like to mark you cards individually.

Nick McArdle, you seem like a thoroughly decent and nice guy, but you are not controlling you program with any level of assurance.

You let some of you panellists get away with absolute garbage, sometimes bordering on the offensive. You know who I am talking about.

You have to improve content and the quality of your panellists, if indeed it is in your power to do so.

Phil Kearns, your playing the clown act is becoming tiresome. I know you are as patriotic as the next Aussie, but you are not sitting around in your lounge with a few mates and beers chewing the fat, you are broadcasting to the nation and sometimes the world.

When you are asked for an opinion, I don’t want you to say “I can’t tip against Australia, we will beat the AB’s by 15”. I can get that down the pub.

I want you to give me a really well thought out and balanced opinion, not jingoistic drivel.

While we are at it Phil, your commentary sucks. It would be funny if it wasn’t so embarrassing and cringe-worthy. If it was in my power I wouldn’t let you anywhere near a microphone.

Greg Martin, quite often I find your comments spiteful and offensive. Your conduct towards the end of the Deans era, you’re egging-on of Quade Cooper (who wasn’t smart enough to see he was being manipulated), the escalation of the matter on the show and soliciting vague answers about the Wallaby environment without ever coming up with anything specific, quite honestly stank.

As for your spiteful and personal attack on a fellow professional, Benji Marshall, that was a disgrace.

“Too old, too fat and not good enough to play rugby.” You could have put your view across without the cheap shots, but no, you had to go for the shock headline.

What gives you the right for such a personal attack on somebody who has achieved considerably more than you (in another more competitive and cut-throat code) and, to my knowledge, has always behaved with dignity?

And personal it was, while your mates were smirking. Classless.

Finally your contributions to the show would only rate marginally above Phil’s, full of nationalistic jingoism and very little analysis or substance.

I’ll be quick on the others.

Rod Kafer you are usually the most capable analyst on the show, but in the last Bledisloe you undid all the good work with a couple of crass comments (“16th man” and “a good penalty to concede”).

Start repairing the damage please and stick to your high standards.

Brendan Cannon, haven’t seen much of you lately but no complaints, apart from the pie in the face mentioned above.

Tim Horan, I have great respect for you and I feel you do your best to give intelligent, honest and balanced views.

Nathan Sharpe, breath of fresh air, there might be hope yet.

If it is too hard to digest all this and act on it, you can always get copies of the other SANZAR partner’s rugby offerings (‘Re-Union’ and ‘Boots and All’) as training manuals. You could do a lot worse.

I know this has been a rant, but I’ve had a gutful.

TEC, couldnt agree with you more regarding the quality of Fox Sports commentary and Rugby HQ. Time for Fox to wake up and realise that their viewing public aren't buying it.

A tv show is a communication/entertainment/ information product. Knowing how to run, tackle or push is not the major prerequisite to creating one. Knowing how to communicate/entertain/inform is very important however, My list of sackings would start with Marto, utterly incompetent as a speaker, followed by Canno who is full of 'education' for the under 8's and 'new to the game' girlfriends in the audience, then Kearnsey (though he could be great as a guest clown brought in for a minute, yes 60 secs, to shoot from the hip) Unfortunately the audience is small and rusted on. There's nothing else on! Rugby is almost invisible in this country. Oniell was paid millions to let this happen. The Roar could start a digital rugby channel. There is more than enough wit on these screens to contribute.

Jeff I saw the same clip of Martin and it was cringeworthy. As I said in other posts above what a waste of a full hour of exposure for Australian rugby. God knows they get little enough of it.

I have spent a fair bit of time on and off in Christchurch over the last 3 years as my job is insurance assessing and as you can imagine there is a lot to do.When I first went there I was told to watch Re-Union but didn't bother as I was sure it would be the same rubbish as Rugby HQ and if it was as biased towards the ABs as Rugby HQ is toward the Wallabies and Australian Super teams it would just annoy the crap out of me.However when around at a business associates for a meal he turned it on and I was astounded at how good it was.Sure it definitely had a kiwi slant but most of the comments were reasonably fair and the analysis was excellent. One night they had Cron on and he gave an analysis of scrummaging [obviously before the latest law change] which was just like Scott Allens. He highlighted the problem with the Wallaby Scrum two years ago and nothing has changed.Unfortunately I didn't see the last bit of that programme as we had a substantial quake during it and spent a few minutes outside. They had an episode before the RWC semi that I saw and the guest was Greg Martin.Well if you ever want to be embarrassed sit in a room with four other kiwis and watch Greg Martin rant on about how good the Wallabies are and how we will thrash you on Saturday etc.One of the worst moments of my life and unfortunately there was no earthquake to interrupt it. So Two Eyed Cyclop I agree with everything you say.And I will happily sign a petition to get Martin and Kearns taken off air for ever.

They should have kept the old Inside Rugby format with interviews from players from the Super Rugby teams, ditch the piggies and princesses nonsense, and the Footy Show style ''humour.'' There is a lot to talk about in NH Rugby, the UK Rugby Club focusses too much on the AP but it does have time for Super Rugby highlights, comments and highlight clips from the RFU Championship. Sky will have Pro 12 rights next season so it will be interesting to see if Dewi, Will and Barnes are forced to comment on it. School of Hard Knocks is back this week too.

With no criticism you expect them to improve? We have very different perspectives. Good luck getting someone to improve by telling them their awesome.

Don't disagree with your comments, although I do have to make mention of the appalling standard of commentating when watching coverage from South Africa too. I actually watched a game where the commentators clearly didn't know most of the names of the non-South African teams ( think it was the Tahs). I lived in NZ for a couple of years and agree for the most part that their coverage of games and other analysis is of a higher standard, but they're not immune to the patriotism and stupidity either.

I look forward to the show every Thursday and record it if I can't be home. I enjoy it very much. Sure, there are a few things that can be annoying and things that can be improved, but it is an upbeat happy show with some interesting observations. It obviously tries to cater for all ages and levels of interest. I would like to see Scott, the Roar's video analyst, be brought into the mix.

Dowd and Bray have been excellent. I'm actually choosing to watch Tests on free-to-air rather than fox for the first time in years.

To be fair NHINZA Kafe only had an absolute shocker in the 2nd Bledisloe and subsequent Rugby HQ where he blamed everything and everybody on the defeat, normally he is excellent. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because he must've been gutted. But as I said previously, the first step to fixing shortcomings is recognising them, blaming everybody else is futile.

So Benji hasn't been setting the world alight this year, does that justifies the very personal and spiteful nature of the attack? A personal opinion from Martin such as "Benji hasn't really impressed me this year and I do have my doubts whether he can make it in Union " wouldn't have raised my hackles. “Too old, too fat and not good enough to play rugby” certainly has. Also to quote you "And BTW it would seem Quade and Marto were right about the Wallaby culture under Deans". Still waiting for somebody to explain and clarify the toxic comments with some specifics. And they don't look like a happy, connected and focused team at the moment, and I haven't seen a modicum of improvement in them either. Now before people jump and down, I fully accept that it is early days and the jury is still out, but a couple of things concern me, such as management blaming everything and everybody for the team's performances and shortcomings, rather than critically assessing and pinpointing what went wrong, which is the first step to fixing it.

Anyone who has seen Benji play this year would have to agree, he has been a little on the chubby side. His form has been woeful and he has yet to play a game of rugby. So the jury is out. It wasn't an attack, more of a comment. And BTW it would seem Quade and Marto were right about the Wallaby culture under Deans.

Have to agree with all of this. My TV is now turned off Rugby HQ. Let's hope a new commentary team is created soon.

Been out of the country for 3 years. Don't miss a minute of those clowns. The only one I rated was Kafe. Sorry to hear he's sunk to the lowest common denominator. NZ show Reunion is usually tops. ZA show Boots & All is average to good & excellent when Nick Mallett is involved. Top analyst who tells it like it is.
