Jake White was simply out for himself

By Wally James / Roar Guru

In the wake of his decision to leave the Brumbies, I have thought long and hard about Jake White.

Without doubt he did a wonderful job in turning around ACT rugby. Within the space of two years he changed the Brumbies from a team of also-rans to within a whisker of a Super Rugby premiership.

I have heard nothing but enthusiasm for him as a coach and as a person. His television appearances portray him as a keen rugby man with an affable but firm approach to the sport.

No doubt those who know him quite like him. He seems like a likeable bloke.

At the end of the day he proved he was not a team man, but a mercenary.

In an honest and self-confessed way, he came to Australia to pursue his quest to return to Test match coaching. When it became clear he could not achieve that here, he left.

Quite clearly he was only interested in making the Brumbies better because it would make his own position better.

Equally clearly, when his own position could not be bettered, the Brumbies were of no interest to him.

That is not the rugby I grew up with. The team was more important than the individual. The country, province or club was more important than the coach and the players.

I have no doubt that remains in rugby but I wish it was more evident at the higher levels.

Jake was more passionate about himself than his team.

Clearly a person with a passion for "the team". If only this passion for the team could be displayed by the Australian team players and administrators, his position would be understood. Jake simply saw what happened to other non-australians like Arthur and the ex Crusader and realised that proffessional sport is a mercenary business. Has the commentator counted the number of non-european players and coaches that have done duty in European rugby? Modern day rugby has moved beyond the emotions of this writer.

The problem was Richard, he still had 2 yrs to go on the 4 yr contract he signed, presumably signed without a pre-nup type get-out clause or a gun held to his head. Had the brumbies said,"Jake, you didn't win us the final so ooroo, bugger off back to SA & we won't be paying you the last 2 yrs of your contract", what would've been the reaction? Some might say as Jake broke the contract he should pay back a substantial portion of it & why not, if he were sacked midway & not paid out all hell would break loose. What's good for the goose .....

Blue No one feels hard done by at Brumbies. National coaches have come and gone at the club and we're still one of the the best in SR (long term results prove that)! We didn't fold when McQueen and then Jones left for the Wobblies job. I expect Bernie and Laurie can carry on the tradition and build on JW work to revitalise our club.

He did ask the Brumbies for a contractual release according to the media. When a person does that it is usually granted as keeping an unwilling party in a key role can be counter productive. Lets all just move on. In time we ill find out why Jake threw the anchor. After all his kids are in SA, that's where his roots are and culturally with our history of double standards, we are not the easiest country for an outsider to understand and live in. It may have very little to do with what is being discussed above.

What a pathetic load of parochial nonsense. Shock, horror. International coach resigns early from his contract. Oooooh. That simply never happens. Poor little ponies. He is leaving them in the lurch. No squad depth, no structures, no training regimes, unhappy squad. Poor Wally. I hope you haven't run out of Kleenex. How are you going to cope with the light of day tomorrow being so terribly hard done by? Jeez there are some precious people around. Grow up.

JW was the ebst candidate and sadly with his departure i can see the Brumbies also departing from finals contention.

Irrelevant. So,JW coached the Brumbies in the hope of securing the wobblies job.The ARU turned him down,so he's looking elsewhere. So I don't see what the problem is.

"Jake White was simply out for himself" It's known as the 'free enterprise capitalist system'. And the Germans have a proverb that goes: 'Every man for himself, and God against all'. :( Right time for exit, says Jones http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/union-news/right-time-for-exit-says-jones-20130926-2uh9l.html Laurie & Bernie should be able to handle the coaching roles, and we might even get a more stimulating brand of rugby to watch as a result.

Conclusion here is that whingers posting on JW leaving are probably not Brumbies supporters. It is possible the next generation at Brumbies will be similar to the McQueen / Jones / Nucifora era. McQueen set the foundations and the other two benefitted with SR titles. The whingers are probably happy not to have JW around for two more years for the sake of their own provinces.

RK More interesting will be to see how the Reds respond to EW leaving. Their spark has been on the slide since 2011.

Dirk Perhaps worry about your own province. By in large Brumbies supporters do not agree with your sentiment. I think most are thankful to JW for setting our club back on the right path.

It is quite clear that he has done in 2 years what he sought to do in 4, which means he did it. So if he wants to leave, say thank you and move along. There is no need to call the man a mercenary.

I agree with you Jeff, so white is a sook for breaking his contract but the ARU were not criticised for breaking Deans contract or Ewen undermining his coaching or Greg Martin bringing his nationality into question in what was effectively a racial slur on his character. The hypocrisy is there for all to see that's not a one eyed Australian supporter, but let's use words like petulant to describe White ,petulant in my opinion is watching the Fox rugby commentators blaming everyone else for the loss, the referee ,Robbie Deans, the new scrum laws. RItchie McGaw etc, I agree White hasn't handled this well but it seems the whole situation in the ARU reeks of amateurism compared to the NZRU .

2013-09-27T10:51:24+00:00

I never had an issue with Jake White, until he started sucking up to the ARU by badmouthing SA rugby. I rate his rants in the same light as Kevin Pietersen after he left SA to play cricket in the UK, Poor taste. If you leave a nation and decide to go elsewhere, remember what the country did for you, not what you deem you did for the country. It is South Africa that gave them their knowledge and experiences to become successful at what they do. I will say the same to any bloke who decides to leave SA, I am proud of my country, if you want to criticise it, %^** off.

You guys can say what you like about him on a personal basis but he remains one of the top 3 all time greatest coaches and rugby people of all time. The work he has done at the Brumbies will leave them in good stead for years to come and be a testament to what he did for them. You are also quick to criticize the man after all the good he did for SA rugby and the amount of rubbish he had to put up with from SARU, the press and the politicians in SA in the process. Even after winning the RWC they could not wait to get rid of him and replace him with who other than Pieter de Villiers. Fact remains Jake got screwed over so he left. Get over it. Remember somebody somewhere is right now chomping at the bit to get him to coach their team because he is Jake White and not a snake or a stywe kuit. Please show me a coach that could do the same job for the Brumbies as Jake did and I will shut up and eat my vegetables. The only other person you could name is Graham Henry, who would not even bother attempting what Jake did. Do you think GH would have done anything different if he was in JW's position?

2013-09-27T09:01:32+00:00

I get called saffa all the time, even Jarpie, Jaapie or Yarpie, depends whether anyone knows how to spell it. ;)

2013-09-27T09:00:42+00:00

In Afrikaans when my son throws a temper tantrum I call him "Stywe Kuite" Doesn't work that well in English, but it means "stiff calves" So from now on Jake the snake AKA Jake Stywe Kuite White.
