5 reasons Arsenal can win the Premier League

By Dylan Arvela / Roar Guru

Let me start off by saying though I am a Manchester United supporter, who in no way supports the Gunners as a club.

At the start of the season it seemed as though Arsenal were going through the motions, having not boosted their squad other than the inclusion of bicycle-kicking Yaya Sanogo.

The 3 – 1 loss to Aston Villa typified the Arsenal side of the last five years, a side that on the surface was an example of class, but as soon as the game got difficult were left with no hope.

Recently however, they have displayed the ability to be one of the best sides in Europe, stringing together a club record of 11 wins away from home.

Here are the five reasons why Arsenal can win the league this season:

1. Cutting ties
Over the off-season Arsenal offloaded a massive 23 players, including Andrei Arshavin, Denílson (Denílson Pereira Neves), Vito Mannone, Andre Santos, Sebastien Squillaci, Marouanne Chamakh and Gervinho (Gervais Lombe Yao Kouassi).

All these players are of Premier League quality, just not title-winning quality.

Parting ways with these players will lighten up the training paddock by losing the bad blood from players who are not starting as much as they would like.

2. Mesut Özil
The bug-eyed German is the best player in the Premier League. Even if Gareth Bale was still at Spurs, Özil would still be the best player.

Özil has the best passing game in the world, having 161 assists for Real Madrid in 159 games. As long as he stays fit, he could assist Arsenal in winning the league.

Moreover, Özil’s inclusion is a sign of Arsenal’s determination to win, which could indicate more big signings in January.

3. The midfield
Easily Arsenal’s biggest strength. Arsenal have the talent needed to dominate teams in possession.

The likes of Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Santi Carzola, Tomáš Rosický, Abou Diaby, Aaron Ramsey, Mathieu Flamini and of course Özil would find a place in most European teams’ midfield – and if one gets injured, another three are able to take his place.

4. They are top
They are in the lead after five games, so their fate is in their hands.

Many fans believe it is the big games that win titles, but Arsenal are a side that often wins the big games. It is the little games that will win Arsenal the league – like their win against Aston Villa.

5. Arsene Wenger
This will be his 13th year as Arsenal manager, making him the most experienced of Premier League managers. This experience may just be what gets the team over the line.

I am a fan of his footballing philosophy of ‘play as if it is art’, and with all the other contending clubs managed by men in their first or second year at their respective clubs, the Frenchman could be the key to the Gunners’ success.

Stopped reading after you claimed Abou Diaby would get into most midfields in Europe.

Arsenal have got their hands and intentions on the trophy and nothing is gonna stop them. January is not so far off, if Wenger can buy two or three more player's of Ozil's class, nothing is gonna stand in their way. This time around I smell a trophy on Arsenal's cabinet...

The premier league is decided by points, not how many players you have.

You can keep saying that they have no depth. The fact remains that 4 key players have been out for the past few weeks and they're not exactly sitting in the relegation zone, are they?

Yep, I agree completely. Arsenal have had a fantastic draw which has helped them to get the results and build confidence. They have some massive games coming up against Dortmund, City & Chelsea, one feels that will shape their season. The squad is stretched at the moment with Carzole, Podolski & Walcott out. Losing Giroud would be a huge loss as only Bendtner believes that Bendtner can replace him. There is always the possibility of playing Podolski through the middle but he tends to get lost in there. Wenger needs to continue to strengthen in January, to sustain a challenge in all competitions. In saying all that, it has been very promising and they were electric this morning against Napoli, and it warms the heart to see them playing with such pace and purpose.

Thanks Steven. Im sure there would of been a lot of clubs interested in Ozil. It was pretty obvious that Bale was heading to Real and from what ive read, Wenger had actually tried to sign Ozil before he moved to Real so no doubt there was already some sort of relationship established there. Im sure Wenger didnt leave it to chance and simply became the right person at the right time. The only comment I agree with you here is the lack of depth Arsenal have. If they are to survive a heavy season ahead, they no doubt need to secure more firepower up front while solidifying their backline. Of course to expect Ramsey to score every single game is to believe Arsenal already have the Premiership in the bag. It wont happen, but his confidence and form is stellar at the moment and given the criticism heaped on him over the years, its a testament to his character to be firing this season. With another win secured this morning against Napoli in the Champions League, confidence in the team must be growing and yes while being top in September means little, they along with Liverpool and Tottenham are the early pace setters in one of the most open season's of the EPL in years.

It's even more frustrating when your CEO comes out and says that the club is in a financial position to spend money and compete with the best clubs in the world, and yet only buys one world class player.

Ray, I don't think Wenger had 'Ozil up his sleeve' by any stretch of the imagination. You're seriously suggesting Wenger had it all planned for Spurs to sell Bale to Real on deadline day and have them back out Ozil? That's slightly far fetched don't you think? Ozil came up by chance, that's why United and all the other big clubs missed it completely. Right place at the right time but nevertheless a great buy I agree. I also don't think it does anything to address the fundamental problems with Arsenal's lack of steel and grit when the going gets tough. We've seen them flatter to deceive so many times when it gets to the sharp end of the season. Being top in September means little. You mention Giroud and Ramsey but the reality is that Ramsey won't keep scoring a goal a game and you have nothing adequate in the way of a replacement for Giroud if he gets injured. Please don't bring up Walcott or Bentner. If Wenger had listened to a single person and bought some supporting cast to do the spade work you'd have a real shout. Keep trusting him sure but he's not winning anything, we've been here many times before.

Brandon I completely agree with you as I wrote below. What must be so frustrating for Arsenal fans is what if Wenger HAD bought a couple more good players this Summer? The league is wide open and you could have really pushed for it this season.

I just wrote an article about the top 6 which should get published later so you can take your pot shots at me then! I don't think Arsenal can win it but I have to say I think it's their (Wenger's own fault). If you look at the table, there isn't an outstanding team. City have a rookie (in the Premiership) manager, Chelsea's squad is very unbalanced and ManYoo are in all sorts of trouble. Yes Ozil was a great buy but they needed some steel at the back, a top class keeper and more numbers in general. Both Wilshire and Walcott are hopelessly fragile and Ozil's stamina was in huge doubt at Real. If Giroud gets a proper injury they have no back up at centre forward and please don't say Walcott as he cannot keep the shape or keep the ball playing through the middle. If Wenger had just been a bit less stubborn (even a fraction!) this Summer they could have given it a real go I think. It is very early days and I think Chelsea and City in particular will improve. The bigger squads will tell especially when we get full into the swing of the Sat/Wed/Sat gig as the season develops and the games build in pressure.

5 reasons: (i) Man U have a new manager (ii) Man City have a new manager (iii) Chelsea have a new manager (iv) Tottenham have relatively new manager (v) Everton have a new manager That said procuring Özil was a masterstroke.

We lack quality depth and are 2 world class players away from winning the premier league. The signing of özil will hopefully pave the way for other world class players to join the gunners. And also the impact that spending money has had on Wenger and the positive response from fans will also see us bring in more quality Players of ozils calibre.

With Walcott, Cazorla, Podolski, Rosicky and Oxlade-Chamberlain currently injured Arsenal have a real problem with availability of wide attacking players and not to mention the complete lack of quality back-up striker to Giroud. Swansea will be a very tough away game tonight and with Wilshere again played out on the left and Gnabry on the right there will be plenty of opportunity for Swansea to produce from wide areas and Arsenal may struggle to create chances from open play again like last week against Sunderland. With the return of injured players and a the acquisition of a quality striker in January Arsenal may well challenge for the title. The next month especially with fixture congestion could be very very tough though.

Not sure what to make of this article, yes they have started well but theyve had some soft opponents and not to mention the squad is thin. some of players you mention diaby, rosicky, wilshere are often injured. there is hardly any striker options if Giroud (who has impressed all us fans with his physical play this season) goes down. who does Wenger call on- Bendtner? I wouldve thought that this article will be more relevant once we come out of the next few games of Champs Lge games and facing the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton, Man U etc. Arsenal Can Win the Title is suddenly flavour of the month but I think its quite premature. In saying that I hope the run continues- it needs to continue- against the easy beats we have coming up West Brom, Crystal Palace etc. before we tackle the big boys. And the gunners are taking all the attention away from big spending spurs they are equal top too and have assembled quite a team that we only saw glmipses of so far.
