With Buddy Franklin to sign a nine-year deal with Sydney worth $10 million, 25-year-old Swan’s player Jesse White is almost certain to leave.
Jesse White had already requested to be traded from the Swans with a strong desire to go to Collingwood.
Jesse White is a 25-year centre-half forward and rotational ruckman. He is 192cm tall and weighs 100kg. His career started in 2007 and he has played 71 games and kicked 73 goals. 2013 was his most consistent year playing 15 out of the 25 games and kicking 20 goals in those 15 games.
Jesse White had asked Swans coach John Longmire to be traded south to a Victorian team and in particular to Collingwood. Longmire accepted this request letting him talk to Collingwood on Monday the 11th.
Another club with interest in Jesse White is the Western Bulldogs but his clear choice, as his next club is Collingwood. Jesse White’s manager, Ben Williams, met with the Swan’s management on Thursday 26th September and afterwards said
“Today I had a meeting with the Sydney Swans on behalf of Jesse and I have requested a trade for him. All of Jesse’s family live in Melbourne so that is the likely destination for him,”
Collingwood have also hinted an interest in Jesse White as an option as a centre-half forward and relief ruckman like the role of Lynch and former Collingwood premiership player Leigh Brown.
Collingwood would use Jesse White like they did Lynch as a target and goal-kicking partner for Travis Cloke.
The Pies have had failed twice with this experiment after Quinten Lynch had a dismal season and Jackson Paine failed to develop into what they had hoped. Personally I think Collingwood hope that Jesse White will play well in this role having done it for Sydney this year.
If the Pies want to attain Jesse White they will need to give up a third round draft pick or another forward like Lynch or Jackson Paine.
It is highly unlikely that Collingwood will trade Lynch and that Sydney would want Jackson Paine so it is up to them to give up one or two second or third round draft picks.
Collingwood have high priority picks after having a downhill season but it would bee highly unlikely that they will use it to get Jesse White.
With Dale Thomas and Heath Shaw leaving, Darren Jolly, Andrew Krakouer, Alan Didak, Jordan Russell, Michael Hartley and Ben Richmond delisted and Ben Johnson who retired half way through the season Collingwood have opened up a lot of room in their salary cap.
Collingwood and Jesse White seem to be on the same road but Sydney have to let him go first. Sydney will most likely let him go to free up room in their salary cap to pay Buddy Franklin the 1.1 million per year that he has agreed to.
Collingwood, Sydney and Jesse White will all need to make up an agreement by the 25th October if he is to become a Collingwood player.
That means they will have an 18-day deadline (7th October – 25th October) to come up with the deal that will put Collingwood and Jesse White into contract negotiations and confirm the switch.

At 192/100 White is really your third-up utility around the ground. He had a good year '13 cos Tippett, Pyke/Mumford took out the first two tall defenders regularly. Questions have to be raised as to whether Pies have same discipline in their structure. White has the tattoos to succeed at Pies, but does he have the engine (a la Tomlinson GWS)? If Quentin Lynch couldn't be the second tall to Cloke, why will White at 192cm do the job? Plenty of third tall defenders are 192cm nowadays.

I'm sure we'd take it, but I doubt that Collingwood would. I think they see him and Grundy as filling their ruck needs for the next decade and I'm pretty sure that they rate him quite highly

How about a swap for Witts (ruckman from Barker College) and draft pick. Witts is 9ft tall..

Well we literally couldn't give him away last year so he definitely has more currency now! I imagine we'll try and get Collingwoods 2nd round pick, which will be late 20's-early 30's depending on how free agency compensation picks there are but I could see us eventually letting him go for their 3rd round pick if they stood firm. The Dogs are reportedly keen on him as well so perhaps we'll use the threat of them picking Jesse up in the PSD as leverage.

Collingwood would be pleased to get White for as little as a third round pick, I'd have thought. I'm not a huge fan but he probably has more currency now than he did a year ago.

I think he'll flourish at a club where he can get some consistent games under his belt. It's not really until this year when the Swans were forced to pick him consistently due to injuries that he was able to really shine. Looks like a confidence player to me. While I'd love him to stay with the Swans, I wish him all the best somewhere else if that's what happens.

Collingwood players going to Carlton, or vice versa, is really a crime and should be legislated against.

Great article Matt, although i do not think Jesse White has much quality as a player, i hope it works out for collingwood though, as they desperatly need a second string forward/ruckman. Still not sure if he is able to perform on the big stage, Go Hawks!

Uh, excuse me. Exactly when has Dale Thomoas said that he is definitely leaving Collingwood. I sure as Hell haven't read any such quote from him.
