Pick Bailey for the Ashes

By Nakul Gureja / Roar Rookie

George Bailey may have been the centre of criticism in the crowd just because he debuted as a captain, but over time he has really worked up on his game and is starting to earn respect.

The selectors trust in Bailey. His classy batting has somewhat covered for the fact that we miss Mike Hussey.

Australia plays One Day Cricket far better than how they play in the longer form of the game. Australia have lost 7 out of the last 9 Test matches they have played while two have ended in a draw.

It may be a co-incidence but after Mike Hussey’s retirement Australia is yet to win a Test match.

Like we did find Bailey as Hussey’s replacement in One Day Cricket it’s high time that they give him a chance for The Ashes.

Bailey said in an interview that selectors have already hinted at an Ashes spot if he has a great Indian tour, which has started with a bang as he played the back bone knock which took Australia to 303 and the victory.

No one in domestic cricket is scoring heaps of runs so the selectors have to pick players on their instinct and Bailey is in the form of his life, scoring in each and every match under pressure situations.

According to me Bailey has done enough to earn the spot in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba which starts 21st November.

Warne means news/controversy and controversies create cash

If Bailey is able to make that change and convert his Odi form into Test Form where everything is different , that's what will define his ability as a complete cricketer.

You probably own the argument! Yes you are absolutely right about Warne being biased . In the Ashes he was just against Cook all the time and with Clarke even on stupid occasions. To everything that happens right in the english team has to be credited to his friend KP where he means like he is being treated like an outcast and blah

Because he was nothing but a cheerleader, with no objective analysis at all. At every single opportunity he attacked Cook, at every single opportunity he went on about how wonderful Clarke was. At every opportunity he accused England of doctoring pitches, and equally claimed absurdly that Australia were pure and noble. Did you ever read his articles in the Daily Telegraph? They were absolutely ridiculous. Nothing other than trying to belittle England whenever he could and claim Australia were magnificent/unlucky/robbed. I don't mind him being a cheerleader as such, but not when he's supposed to be doing a job of commentary. Instead, he viewed it as an extension of his role within the Australian set up, to launch propaganda. His "Lose to win" diatribe was simply embarrassing to listen to. And my objection to what Vaughan says a lot of the time is along the same basis (except he's not in the England set up, so at least doesn't have that issue). Now, contrast that with the articles that Glen McGrath wrote in the Guardian. Sure, it was from an Australian perspective - which is why it was interesting. But it wasn't just drivel, like Warne's. It wasn't deliberately acting as the PR arm for the Australian team. Warne can do what he likes, but as a commentator he's shockingly awful. As a journalist he's worse. I don't even have a dislike for what he did. Utter contempt is nearer the mark.

Yes Warne is a big attention seeker and probably only that matters to him but just like Steven i find his insights fantastic. and Vaughan 's twitter is mostly about banters (nothing serious over there unless he writes against the Aussies)

Chris, I agree with you about Vaughan - he just likes to be controversial and he ignores me when I take issue with him on Twitter (can't think why.....) - but what's your beef with Warne? I noticed I think you made a similar comment during another debate. I personally find his insight into the game etc fantastic but you're not alone I don't think in having him wind you up. Just trying to understand what it is, I'm clearly missing something. Genuine question by the way!

Fair point Chris, I was merely trying to illustrate that OD and T20 skills don't necessarily translate to the test arena but it's a very valid observation you're making.

It's a matter of trying to differentiate his good points from the rubbish. And Warne is a prize knob. He didn't make many friends over here.

Haha yes Vaughan is a heel of cricket but still he does make sense sometimes and the way things are right now Bailey is a strong contender to make it in. and Warne is fun #JustSaying :)

Vaughan does come out with a lot of nonsense though. He's the English Warne in that regard. But I do think it's true that Bailey is rated rather more highly by English observers than Australian ones.

Michael Vaughan wrote on Twitter and i quote: "George Bailey would be my No 6 for Australia in the Ashes.... I would also make him VIce Captain ... #Justsaying"

The difference Steven is that in the case of those two players, England have given them a substantial run in the Test side to find out if they can hack it at that level.

Test Cricket is very different to One Day Cricket but at a time when all you are going through are collapses , you have to go with the gut instinct.

Bailey can out perform Khawaja, Hughes, Maxwell. The pressure of international cricket is always different to that of domestic (which i agree with you)
