Consistency the key for touring Wallabies

By Emma Kemp / Roar Guru

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie has some pretty simple goals heading into his first Spring tour.

“We’re out there to win – five wins would be good,” McKenzie told reporters on checking in at Sydney International Airport on Friday.

“We’re not out there to come second so we’re out there to win every game and obviously get some consistency.

“Winning one game is not enough. We’ve got to win consistently.”

Five wins would give the Wallabies their first grand slam in nearly three decades, a fair target for a squad determined to restore pride after a difficult 2013 in which they managed just three Test wins from 10 attempts.

It is the squad’s second tour of the Home Nations since their one and only sweep in 1984, when coach Alan Jones and skipper Andrew Slack led them to a startling triumph – legendary five-eighth Mark Ella scoring a try in all four Test wins.

Their last attempt in 2009 failed in just the second match when they drew 20-20 with Ireland.

A five-from-five result would represent some measure of revenge after this year’s devastating series loss to the British and Irish Lions.

It would also provide McKenzie with a massive springboard towards the 2015 World Cup in England.

Their first and toughest stop on the road to redemption will be London’s Twickenham Stadium next Saturday, when they’ll face England before travelling to Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

McKenzie said he could feel momentum building in the squad on the back of an “encouraging” performance against the All Blacks in Dunedin last weekend, coupled with their 54-17 thumping of Argentina earlier this month.

“All the players can feel that,” he said.

“There’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes within the group, all positive things, so this tour will be a great opportunity for us as a group to work hard and get some good results.

Despite that 41-33 loss to a typically clinical New Zealand, Australia’s 33 points broke the record for their highest score against the All Blacks on home turf.

Costly handling errors and sloppy breakdown work were offset by moments of free-flowing play in which five-eighth Quade Cooper played his best game of the season, with 18 points and a 100 per cent kicking return.

“There’s been encouragement in all of their games but, ultimately, you can only talk about the scoreboards,” McKenzie said.

“The scoreboards haven’t been kind to us, but there’s been a lot of positives from the coach and player perspective.

“In the end, we’ve just got to pull that together, we’ve just got to tidy up things that keep repeating and there’s been a few of those things that we’ll target on this tour.”

Flanker Michael Hooper, who collected the John Eales Medal on Thursday night, pointed to defence as the key against a strong England side.

“We’re starting to put things together, our backs are starting to fire and I think we’ve still got a long way to improve so we’ve come out with some good results on the back of not our best performances.

“Playing a different style of rugby is a good challenge for us.”

Friggin Grand Slam? FFS Ewan is delusional! I think they'd be lucky to win one game on their current form. Worst Wallabies I have ever seen in my life.

England are a one trick pony.. occasionally a two trick! every one raving on how they gonna beat the WB's and AB's, not likely..for mine they'll struggle against Ewen's boys and get BELTED by the Darkness...everything in it's rightful place!

I think we're getting a bit carried away there Tane. Where have I said anything against the NZ people. So I give a bit to o so gracious AB fans like you who never ever have a bad word to say about anyone and gee watch those toys fly out of the pram. You seem to be doing a good job at crying your own river. If you want to talk rugby, talk rugby. Thats why we're here. If you feel its your duty to hurl insults and deny Wobs fans any hope of optimism or to look for positives about our team then don't expect us to lie down and bow to you. If you can't take it sunshine, don't give it.

I can make a blooper reel out of the same matches. Hooper is useless at his core task he's an undersizd running 6. I know Link has to pick him over Gill since Hooper has an ARU top-up and the ARU need to save money, but Im still not happy about trying to win games without a functioning backrow.

"England and the English press think Australia will be the easy beats for the autumn series and are all talking about beating the All Blacks again. I say this is a good thing as they will not be expecting Australia to be as good as we think they are becoming. " Some would say that If they are working on the things they need to do to challenge the ABs, and not fully focussed on this, assuming they will outplay the Wobs at the set piece etc., they may find the gameplan that beat the boring BA* Wallabies doesn't work as well against high paced 'basketball rugby' (their term) that will see their forwards walking at the 55 minute mark and the Wob backs targeting lumbering, out of breath forwards in defence and running around their outstretched arms..... [* "Before August"] I don't think its that simple, but if they are obsessed with the AB game, good.

Does it really Wozza. Id like you to show me all the comments directed at Australians as a people by NZers as opposed to about how good the rugby team is. A lot of Australians on here, including your good self (sarcasm) who attack and slander us as a nation. Kiwis attack your team for the most part, some of you guys attack thre character of a whole nation and accuse them of being amoungst the lowest (cheats, takers, bludgers). That doesnt seem to be our thing as kiwis generally but Im sure there are some bigots amoungst us. Thats low and dirty and thank god your Wallaby team isnt like that. The funny thing is that I say there are a few Wallaby supporters that attack the character of NZ people instead of our team and then Jak and Wozza follow that up by attacking NZ peoples character. Pathetic people you are. Australians are generally good people and so are Kiwis but there are a few amoungst us that are a bit ugly inside.

"" Australia back Israel Folau is determined to make an impression when he faces England at Twickenham Stadium next weekend. Still smarting from Australia's series loss to the British and Irish Lions earlier this year, Folau is looking for revenge. The tri-code convert has made a stunning impact to life in Union with the Waratahs and Wallabies, scoring seven tries in ten Tests so far - including a hat-trick in his latest match for Australia against Argentina. "The rivalry between the Aussies and the Poms is something you always want to get up and play for, Wales as well, it will be a hit back for the Lions campaign," Folau told Rugby Gold. "Most of the guys involved are in the Welsh and English teams, you want to be playing your best footy against quality sides like that. "It's in the back of your mind, that this is the only way you can get back at them, playing these type of games. "It makes it a lot more special when you make your mark against good teams like that, especially at stadiums like Twickenham. "You want people to remember your performance in a big game, that's something I really enjoy as a challenge. "As a player you want to stand out. I will try to play my role for the team. It only helps if we get a full team performance that guys can shine as individuals. It's a special thing for me to have big performances in big games." Australia will also face Wales, Ireland and Scotland after their trip to Twickenham, as Folau continues to settle into his new role in the 15 jersey for the Wallabies. "[I'm] a lot more [comfortable] in attack, getting my hands on the ball, coming into the line and calling it with confidence," added Folau. "Realising that I can play for the team a little bit more, getting the team on the front foot at times, I feel a lot more comfortable in doing that." "" -------------------------------------------------------------------- "" Wallabies boss Ewen McKenzie has bullishly thrown down the gauntlet ahead of Australia's November tour of Europe. The Wallabies endured a tricky Rugby Championship campaign, emerging with just two victories, both over basement boys Argentina. That said, after a desperately poor start, things did look brighter for the Australians in their final two test-matches, with a thumping victory over the Pumas in Rosario, and a much-improved performance in defeat to the All Blacks 41-33 in Dunedin. "We're out there to win - five wins would be good," said McKenzie. "We're not out there to come second so we're out there to win every game and obviously get some consistency. "Winning one game is not enough. We've got to win consistently." McKenzie stated that the momentum of those two most recent fixtures is having a positive effect on his charges. "All the players can feel that," he said. "There are a lot of things going on behind the scenes within the group, all positive things, so this tour will be a great opportunity for us as a group to work hard and get some good results." But, the coach was keen to point out that professional rugby is about results, and results have been hard to come by for the Wallabies in 2013. "There's been encouragement in all of their games but, ultimately, you can only talk about the scoreboards," said McKenzie. "The scoreboards haven't been kind to us, but there have been a lot of positives from the coach and player perspective. "In the end, we've just got to pull that together, we've just got to tidy up things that keep repeating and there's been a few of those things that we'll target on this tour." ""

Bigotry. Bigotry is the state of mind of a bigot: someone who, as a result of their prejudices, treats other people with fear, distrust, hatred, contempt, or intolerance on the basis of a person's ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics. Thats you BRO. So BRO, you are most definately NOT my bro. You are somebody that should be a thing of the past but is somehow still around. Youre from the pre civil rights era of the deep south mate.

The Wallabies are just now starting to play decent Rugby. Speed, deception, support, support, support are showing some signs of a renaissance. Though the boys are still not good at it, fumbles, knock-ons, wayward passes and poor positioning all indicate that they are just learning this stuff and are not up to speed. WHICH... Is why we will always struggle at test level because this is the stuff that should have been taught at school, reinforced at club level and neither Dingo nor Link should have to be coaching it. The furphy of "Wallaby Rugby'' should finally be put to rest as it has overseen our worst years, no question. If the ARU want to make Rugby more popular then backing a winning formula is their only choice. School coaches must be visited by players and others to reinforce the basics of :- execution, precision, at speed, heads up and the whole team scheming and encouraging. Game plans are for working class sports; we need to generate team builders and leaders i.e. future executives. This is what is known as the Rugby brain and without developing it it we do not have a chance at any representative level.

I love how the default argument for disgruntled Australians is to tell people to go home if you don't like the Wallabies. WTF has moving to Australia for money got to do with who you support in sport? Absolutely nothing. People who migrate to Australia don't owe you anything, some of you are quick to forget your also "unwanted" guests on that patch of dirt.

Granted,Australia getting England first up is a bonus as the WB's will be getting England with little game time under their belts. It gives the WB's a starter's chance at any rate. As for the AB's,yeah, the poms are certainly gunning for them. And will have every chance of rolling them. It's no coincidence that the AB's are last on their itinerary,as the early games give them time to build up their combinations for them.Frankly,I would give the WB's more chance of beating England than the AB's.And that would be slim to none.
