After last Monday night’s win, third-placed Melbourne Victory head up to meet old rivals Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium. Join us from 7.45pm AEDT for live scores and commentary.
This ‘Big Blue’ might not be between two sides who are close on the ladder, but these fixtures always seem to result in something spectacular.
Sydney FC
Sydney has had a poor start to the season by the Sky Blues’ lofty standards, having only won one of their first four matches so far this campaign.
Sydney showed good signs in their season opener, but they have looked clueless in their matches since.
Sydney is yet to score since Round 1, but have conceded seven in the last three rounds.
Sydney’s poor form has lead to many questioning Frank Farina‘s role as head coach. It was this fixture last year that saw ex-Sydney boss Ian Crook resign from Sydney’s top job.
Sydney will be boosted by the return of Alessandro Del Piero. Del Piero may be what Sydney needs to hit the scoreboard. Sydney are yet to score without Del Piero this season.
Sydney is going to struggle against last year’s minor premiers.
Melbourne Victory
The most relieved man in the Victory camp at the moment will be new coach Kevin Muscat.
The new Victory manager registered his first win in charge last weekend against a fast finishing Wellington Phoenix.
The Victory got off to the perfect start last weekend going 3-0 up half way through the first half.
When Paul Ifill scored in around the 80th minute some Victory fans got a bit anxious, but they held off until the end to record a 3-2 victory.
Melbourne will come into this match as strong favourite’s. Melbourne’s strong start to the year has pleased many Victory fans.
Although there is a question mark to whether they can continue this form without Postecoglou, they still should come out on top.
I’m predicting a 2-0 win to Melbourne Victory. They will be too lethal up front for the fragile wall that is the Sydney FC back four.

@ Doug. Keep trying. We have noticed at times that they release more tickets on a daily basis. You just have to get lucky. Cant necessarily guarantee you will get tickets but we have seen this situation already happen.

jb Fair point - no idea & can only presume it was fatigue? Pain has only played 230' out of a possible 450.

Could you have a stab at how many you reckon there were?

you guys have clearly never seen a MVFC game, who have had the same issue for many seasons. some people get memberships to ensure tickets to the biggest games. not a very complex concept. people don't actually think that WSW is putting up the sold out sign cos they can't be bothered selling any more tickets and making more money? hahah. i remember similar conspiracies going around when WSW were selling out membership packages. sold out sign means the maximum amount of money is in the bank. also MVFC have been given 5 bays which is a surprisingly high allocation. should create an awesome atmosphere next Saturday night.

they've got over 16K members, who don't always turn up. There's a plan to enable them to return their tickets to be resold. I don't know if that's taken effect yet. I know I tried to buy 2 tickets from Ticketek and there were none available.

Fuss - only one question jumped out. It has long been recognised that one of the surest ways to breakdown a "stacked" defence is to use fast wide players to get in behind the last defender, then with those same defenders now facing their own goal the cutback, low or high becomes extremely dangerous. Comes late in the game & Kevin takes off the fastest player in the team, the same man who beautifully set up Thompson's tap in goal with one of these cut-backs.. Didn't appear to be any reason apparent or given?????? Any clues? .jb

Hahaha, I'm at AAMI for each and every game but I'd rather use the word 'wretched' than 'comical'.

You mean like the last two "sellouts" where they barely cracked 16k?

That Bojic tackle at the end really summed up the night. Far too soon to say if they've turned their season around. But tonight was a huge statement.

For the first time in a long time I have to say that Sydney FC played with some real grit and determination. Deserved the win.

"Will Victory struggle without Ange?" What do you think Ange would have done differently? Under Ange, MVFC * lost 5-0 away to Brisbane Roar * lost 4-2 away to AUFC * lost 6-2 to away to CCM It's only 2 games, but I see no difference to the way MVFC approach the games under Muskie, compared to Ange.

"Would have to go a long way to see more comical defending " So, you're another Heart supporter that doesn't attend games? ;-)
