Shame about Billy, but Inglis is our best fullback

By ScottWoodward.me / Roar Guru

Many people consider Billy Slater the best player in the world and plenty say he is the best fullback, not only in the game, but of all time.

He is a shoe in to be an Immortal.

The Melbourne Storm number one aggravated an old knee injury during Saturday’s 62-0 quarter-final victory over the USA on Saturday and it is now confirmed that he will miss next week’s semi-final and is in grave doubt to play in the final on Saturday week.

Normally when a key spine player of the ilk of Slater is injured panic station are set off and the opposition (England and NZ) get excited.

I am one of those in the opposition shed, as I have supported the Kiwis to go back to back, but based on what we witnessed this weekend the Kangaroos will not be weakened without Billy Slater, in fact, I will likely firm Australia in my ratings.

Based on 2013 form, Greg Inglis is a superior fullback to Billy Slater in my opinion, and the move will allow the NRL’s in-form Michael Jennings to slot in smoothly into his favoured left centre position.

Perhaps the main reason for the pencil to be sharpened when assessing the Kangaroos is Jarryd Hayne who has finally arrived on the International rep scene and we can now see what all the fuss has been about.

His performance to score four tries and set up another was nothing short of staggering as he made nine tackle breaks and four line breaks.

Credit must be given to Bob McCarthy and the coaching staff for selecting Hayne over the very reliable Brent Tate and while it may have appeared an easy choice, replacing an incumbent who never has a bad game would have been tough. The fact is, Tate simply cannot do what Hayne can – few players can.

So on the negative side of the ledger we have Billy Slater out, and on the positive side Greg Inglis will play fullback, Michael Jennings come in to centre and the Kangaroos have found a major distinctive X factor called Hayne.

All up, not a bad day for Australia.

Scott I left your views alone because I thought the post was past it's use by date however I only mentioned a handful of forwards better than SBW. I could have mentions a bucket full of back who would have eaten him up and spat him back out. He'd be lucky to rate at SOO level. He's the new Phil Blake.

Muzz ... Bellamy, Smith, Slater, Cronk, trainer, nutrisionist, physiotherapist and psycologist ... If he survives all that and remains determined and disciplined he'll play the best season of his career ... And he has the same surname as Slater's wife :-) ... I'm not into punting though. The statement was that SBW is the best forward to ever play the game ??? My answer - NO !!! He does not, dare I say it, have the runs on the board or enough games to compare to his rivals - Categorically, he will not be considered to be an Immortal - nor the Hall of Fame ... Mel Meninga, in my opinion, was of similar build to SBW and GI but was a better player then both and should be the next Immortal with Lockyer ... I know Inglis is powerful and fast, but watch him closely, he retreats to the side line or the back of the field and is not as intuitive as BS ... He has a different body structure and instincts to Slater - Slater is, 4 years his Junior, who is instinctively an 80 minute player (instilled into him from his father) - GI is not an 80 minute player - FULL STOP ... Meninga was as dynamic and strong as GI and a great goal kicker and was coached through the days of the 80 minute game - captained his club, state and country ... I rest my case ...

No one has to defend SBW,millions know that GI and SBW are the best players in the world..... I watched my first Live Roosters game at the old Sydney Sports Ground and big Artie tore them apart.......I made the big bloke laugh once after a School RL grand final. Do you think Bellamy will get big George Rose into Shape?

PS:- Tell me if I'm wrong - In Artie's day, the inter-change was only for injury - all players played 80 minutes, as apposed to today, with most forwards only playing half a game ... Yep, even SBW. Must have something to do with fitness, I'd say ???

Sssshhhh ... Artie may have gone to "the other side", but his sons are still alive ... :-/ I'll ask my father-in-law what he thinks of your opinion ... You will probably differ, but I should have mentioned Mal Meninga ... Not sure SBW or GI have his measure ??? They are more in the same frame as Wendall Sailor ... I was hoping not to mention "Del" ... Like Daley Cherry-Evans and other Queensland and Australlian representative players, he did his schooling in Sarina ... DCE, a wonderful talent, at least has his photo up in the school foyer as a Junior representative ... Wendall was a late bloomer !!!!

Stormtrooper Nice and you are very entitled to say your bit. I am not bagging Artie when I say this but he was only a 60 min player with an average work rate. His big skill was toughness and getting the ball away from impossible positions. Well, SBW is just as tough and gets the ball away probably even better and as a bonus he plays for 80 mins and runs as fast as most backs.

Something has to be said about the difference between a player who has played 10 years at a consistently very high level and a player who has only played a few seasons, showing form, talent and skill and whose reputation is more about media hype and his physique ... SBW is a good footballer, showing that over a short term - Most games he plays he hardly puts a hair out of place ... He would be a bonus to any team, if club committment was more his forte ... He's a reasonable boxer, but probably what he'd really excel at is body building ... It's certainly not a good thing to have his ego inflated by further media oggling ... In the "good old days" there where players playing in country league that where never sited ... My father-in-law played for Queenland in the #1 jersey in 1964 - the incumbent was injured ... I've had many convey to me that in their opinion there where other fullbacks who should have donned the jersey ... He also played with Artie Beetson - In my opinion SBW doesn't come close to Artie or GI if size, strength and ability has any credibility ... In my father-in-law's opinion the best player in Queensland at that time was a fellow with the surname Cherry ... Daly Cherry-Evans Grandfather ... Strangely enough he never played for his state ... I hailed from Mount Isa, in the day ... Legend has it that the Isa team of 1969 was the best in Queensland - Some may question that ... Because of the distance being selected for Queensland was but a dream for "The Mighty Miners" ... I can also say, that folks in the NW didn't get to see too much footy on television, so Sunday footy and our club teams where precious and blessed us with treasured memories - And we where fully aware of the famous league players from Brisbane and Sydney ... Some familiar home town football names have played in the NRL over the last decade or so, Bawden, Prince, Fien and Slater and it's no surprise that they have ... There fathers , uncles and cousins where top of their game ... A long time before he became King, Wally Lewis and his Valley's team ventured onto Kruitschnitt Oval to face North Queensland - Lewis couldn't cope, and after what he deemed to be bad refereeing decisions, he wallked off the field - I believe the referee was Barry Gomersall ... And, the large contingent of spectators where there to cheer our local boys on - Wally who ??? Who would have thought how great he'd become ... There have been some familiar home town names playing in the NRL in the last decade or so - Bawden, Prince, Fien and Slater, whose fathers, uncles and cousins - represented the Isa and NQ along with NRL CEO's Bruno Cullen and Denis Keeffe who also where amongst our heroes, and are still giving back to the game, which is a lot more than any opportunity they where given of proving their greatness - SBW has a long way to prove his leagueability and greatness to me.

Leaving aside the ridiculous assertion that this is what 'most' believe.... what motive would you hypothesis the 'powers that be' would have to rig an Aus v NZ final? If you were going to go to the complex task of choreographing the performances of hundreds of athletes and officials surely it would be to get one of the host nations in there or maybe France, USA - teams that could be boosted hugely by making the final rather than the usual suspects. Australia v NZ was always likely, and would be a cracking game since they are great sides - but as far as the organisers are concerned it's the least exciting option.

Raugeee All I can tell you is Sonny completely changes the ratings of a team when he plays. No foward has ever had so much influence. He is the reason why I have backed NZ to go back to back.

JOhn Lamb was 6 and not a forward. I considered SBW the best forward I had seen play the game when he was at the Bulldogs. For me the amount of games is totally irrelevant, it is about the best and longevity is not part of the criteria. It is my opinion and the every professional I know agrees with me. The best player in your list is Bobby McCarthy and I expect he would agree with me. I will ask him when he get back from the UK.

Are you serious. Are you going to climb through your computer and hit me or sue me if i list the things people already know.......No one was trying to sabotage Slater last night but any small criticism toward him and you start getting nasty....Read the Dr's first comment and then your response to him......I think your obsession with Slater is Hilarious......When State of Origin games are played in Sydney 80,000 fans chant "Slater is a banker",no other QLD players cops such a serve from the NSW supporters,Could they all be wrong or jealous of his ability ?Billy Slater isn't everyones cup of tea.. GI # 1 BS# 2

So, if you're brave enough to make such a comment, have the guts to explain what you mean - What is the "other side of it" and how is "it" any worse than any other NRL player ... I actually know DCE much better than I know Slater ... Also, scoring tries are not the only guage to determine a quality player or a champion ... You are totally wrong, it may seem as though I'd be the first to jump to defend Billy, most certainly not before his wife and mother ... I'm just as critical of his on or off field demenour - I've never said he's perfect, neither are you or I or DCE ... I don't believe the public have the right to sabbotage their personal lives, or resort to slander to degrade them ... Society is so judgemental - People in Glass Houses ... As for what may be or may not be for us or a footballer's career or life is anyone's guess ... It could all be over in a blink of an eye ... I just love to watch great football and talented players and I've been doing that for over 50 years ...

think about it he is the best defensive fullback (stats) he pops up everywhere which helps the FE and HB. He call out defensive formations constantlyin game (heard from the sidelines) not to mention that fact that Brett stewart (NOT DCE or Foran) leads our attack. DCE and Foran thrive on brett stewart to complete there plays. Plus brett stewart was born for he big stage (comes back to origin last year after 4 years and bags 3 tries) also he is one lucky guy who has a knack for being in the right place at the right time

"It was a different era and a different game" Indeed it was which means you can't compare players in each position from era to era. What you can do though is judge them on their contemporaries from the time. Langlands and Churchill were head and shoulders the BEST is their positions for their time, in fact as with the other Immortals the best all round of their time. The Immortals is not a concept to be picked by who was best in each position. Slater has had a good run as the best FULLBACK of his time, but he is by no means the best player of his time. If I were selecting the AUS or QLD sides at this very moment it would be Inglis at Fullback, IMO are far better footballer in all the positions he has played. Billy is good, very good but lets not mistaken that with greatness or eventually Immortality.
