Wallabies keen to keep Folau at fullback

By Jim Morton / Roar Guru

He’s been slated to move to outside centre for the NSW Waratahs in 2014 but Israel Folau won’t be moving from fullback for the Wallabies any time soon; or ever.

Despite Australia missing their only two No.13s – Tevita Kuridrani and Adam Ashley-Cooper – for this weekend’s Test against Scotland, coach Ewen McKenzie rubbished at any thought of shifting Folau from fullback.

McKenzie said such a move would be completely illogical.

“He’s been outstanding (at fullback),” he said. “Everyone says that so why would we suddenly want to move him?

“If you put him at 13, a lot of the attributes he brings to the game will suddenly disappear so it doesn’t seem to make sense.”

With Kurtley Beale returning to the Waratahs, NSW coach Michael Cheika has a tough job working out where to fit in the two Wallabies fullbacks.

Cheika also has the challenge to try and keep both five-eighth Bernard Foley and Ashley-Cooper in their favoured positions.

But Folau’s freakish skills under the high ball – shown by the number of times he defused bombs and then immediately counter-attacked dangerously against Ireland last weekend – means McKenzie won’t be moving him, even though he’d also be a certain star in the centres as well.

“I’d be taking away the things he likes,” said the coach, who picked Christian Leali’ifano to play the Scots there instead. “He enjoys what he’s doing at the moment.

“Sure, he’s good at running the ball – he’s good at catching it as well.”

Im looking forward to a strong Eastern seaboard derby, hoping for a solid Tahs recovery with Folau helping the cause. This will be good for Australian Rugby. As a Reds fan, the bolstered forwards eg Slipper, Simmons, and exposure for Gill will hopefully get the team back to its 2011 heights and win. But it won't be easy. Meantime the next WB two tests will be an interesting challenge, for different reasons.

@Tane I have no idea who you are arguing with or what the point is you are trying to make. No one has said anything about O'Driscol or the other blokes, no one has said SBW is not a great player. Your point about SBW being comforable at 6 in league is relevant to what? If you are looking for an argument for arguments sake, well good luck with that. Im currently busy with a thing called "life" so you can go and play your silly games all by yourself ;-)

Just a reminder that the guy you are agreeing with thinks BOD, C.Smith and B.Smith are not good players. Heres a story of how SBWs feels comfortable at 6 in league and why http://www.google.com/url?q=http://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/8868398/Sonny-Bill-stars-in-the-halves-for-Roosters&sa=U&ei=qQaPUqDlD4-UiQee-YGwCg&ved=0CBMQFjAD&usg=AFQjCNHBXAxRIwVpSem4kwviVE8wMcDxbg

SBW is a playmaker in union and league. Yes SBW and Folau have different attributes, thats my point. SBW has a step every bit as good as Folaus and is well known for it. Folau being more of a success is debatable. As soon as SBW was elligible for the ABs he was picked and was an instant success in a better team that the Wallabies. However this has nothing whatsoever to do with where Folau should play. Nothing in the slightest so I have no idea why you even thought you would mention it. You cant just learn to offload like SBW. Thats like saying "just put anyone up front and they can learn to do what Messi does". I will just leave the last word to Ewen. “If you put him at 13, a lot of the attributes he brings to the game will suddenly disappear so it doesn’t seem to make sense.”

An Inglis has not been found yet in the professional era in Australian rugby union. Someone as truly exceptional as that is worth paying for not just to be a drawcard for a Super franchise, or the Wallabies, or to improve the Wallabies, but simply for the pleasure of seeing him play rugby.

Its easy to pass the ball too but some are amazing at it and some pretty ordinary.

Nice fantasy but I'd rather see that sort of money go into junior development and capturing all the future inglis's.

Ajax seeing Folau makes it sad to think what Inglis would have been like if JON had made a serious play when the Storm scandal broke :-( Those two in the centres would be quite useful :-)

Folau is not very fast Tane like a top speed wing, but he is significantly faster than SBW, which is his major advantage. This is probably also why Folau would play 13 and not 12. One day for the Barbarians it would be good to see SBW 12 and Folau 13.

Your right, after less than 15 tests he is playing much better at test level that SBW was. SBW was not a playmaker for the All Blacks, ditto Folau for the Wallabies. You are correct in that he was a better forward in league than Folua was.. Im not blogging on a NRL page so your point is somewhat moot. Folua is quicker, better in the air, and has a better step than SBW. SBW had the worlds best offload, which is something Folau can learn. I haven't noticed Folau's deficiency in passing.

Ajax I don't mean he's not quick, he is quick, and would be a fast centre or Tuqiri-speed wing (i.e. not as fast as some), but at full-back as he doesn't have the absolutely fastest speed the opposition can catch him more easily at full-back. At centre they wouldn't have time. Folau is an outstanding player at 15, but would be a superstar at 13.

Hes nothing like SBW. SBW is a playmaker. Folau is not. SBW was best as a forward in league. Folau was not. SBW has a pretty good pass either side. Folau does not. SBW is arguably the best offloader in union history. Folau is not. Folau is good in the air. SBW is not. "He could be far more of a game-winner at centre, where he could break the line continually at will" Hes not magical KPM.

Out of the game? Then get yourself in it. I think wings take the high ball too Justin and also offer cross kicking targets. He is a back 3 player. Like Jane, B.Smith, Piatau who have been great successes on the wing and fullback.

I'd go with that Beale at 12 could mix both his playmaking and his line running skills. He's not terrible in defense, I like it. Folau needs a central role, and to be kept in an area to utilise his aerial skills.

I agree, he has all the atributes to play like SBW or Nonu.. big powerful man who can offload, kick step, ah, he has got it all.... I dont guy into this garbage that he's not quick either.. At centre he would be constantly testing the line, and attracting more than one defender. Oh well, lets see how he goes for the Tahs at 13.

Can't believe anyone thinks it's his best position. He could be far more of a game-winner at centre, where he could break the line continually at will and from close in. He doesn't have the pure speed to be as effective at full-back, where he can be tracked down too fast. Sure he's perfectly excellent there because of his incredible ability, but a fraction of the player he could be in the centres, where he could ritually dominate games.
