All Whites eye football qualifying through Asia

By News / Wire

The Socceroos could find themselves battling rivals New Zealand on the road to future World Cups with the Asian Football Confederation looking at ways to incorporate Oceania into the AFC’s qualifying equation.

AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said the two groups were working on a proposal to combine Asia’s four-and-a-half World Cup qualifying slots with Oceania’s half spot.

New Zealand football figures, including outgoing coach Ricki Herbert, have sought the country’s direct inclusion in the AFC but Shaikh Salman said it would be better to combine Asia and Oceania’s World Cup quotas.

“We had the Australians in but I think we should look at how can we combine our slot together,” Shaikh Salman said.

“This is something that we’re discussing with Oceania and hopefully we come to an agreement on how those legs are to be played, because I think geographically we’re much closer and on a technical basis we’re level or on the same par.”

That could mean Oceania teams doing battle with Asian sides as part of a re-jigged qualification structure, or, the winner of the Oceania confederation joining the AFC group at some point during the World Cup playoffs.

The region’s two play-off contenders, Jordan and New Zealand, were roundly defeated in their efforts to conquer Central and South American opponents to make the 2014 World Cup.

FIFA would have to clear any changes and insiders said any agreement would also have to contend with many political and commercial roadblocks, with the desire to give New Zealand an easier qualifying route unlikely to win out.

Australia made a similar switch after the 2006 qualification, avoiding difficult inter-continental play-offs to qualify in 2010 and 2014 as a result.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has recently said he wanted more World Cup places for Asia, and the play-off system could also be scrapped.

Shaikh Salman said the AFC’s competitions committee would discuss World Cup qualifying in January, with FIFA’s executive committee to potentially decide upon any changes in April 2014.

Sooner than you think I will be shown to be right and you will be munching on humble pie kasey. You claim not to care yet you feel the need to respond to my comments- strange? If you are so sure that I am talking through my hat why bother responding to me?. Interestingly I noticed you have nothing to say about gallop and his feeling that the central coast is not large enough to support a professional team hence his refusal to put the central coast bears in the NRL.

Johan is on a Roar.com.au crusade to prove that he is right about the Mariners imploding and re-locating away from Gosford. I think he is FoS and that Charlesworth is just angling for a better deal with the Gosford City Council and the Mariners wil still be the CC Mariners in 10 years time.

whats Qatar got to do this with mate? is it unthinkable to have a World Cup in an arab state? they deserve a go and football is for everyone. it wasnt too long ago that australia was regarded as a small fish in the pond and i will never forget Alvaro Recoba's famous last words after uruguays 1-0 first leg win over australia saying that uruguay had a divine right over australia to make the World Cup . what happened next is australians fine moment but now australians like you are becoming so cocky its not funny anymore

That would be huge combining the AFC with the OFC, literally. Imagine Uzbekistan travelling to Tahiti for a group qualifying game and vice versa. Australia v American Samoa for Tim Cahill world record goal scoring feat.

"FIFA would love for China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam to one day make the greatest stage" Didn't they all qualify for the quarter finals of the rugby league world cup still going on over in those dodgy northern England coal mining villages?

Not really sure what the Mariners have to do with the Oceania's proposal to qualify via Asia for the World Cup........

I don’t really care mate. To me you come across as a shallow part-fan poster who does not post in a manner that demonstrates that you do want football to succeed. Re-locating the Mariners would not be good for football IMO. The fans the Mariners do have would be completely browned off to the game and given Sydney's fickle history of football support I wonder if re-locating them to the North Shore long-term would even bring more fans than they would lose by such a manoeuvre, besides the short-term shiny-new-toy spike in attendances.

You appear to be under the misguided assumption that I want the mariners to fold. Not so - I want them to be Relocated to an area where they can at least cover their costs and ultimately make a profit. My concern is for the ongoing success of the league and that involves tough decisions sometimes. My source who works at the FFA has told me that gallop does not believe the central coast can sustain a professional sports team. Why do you think he rejected the central coast bears bid for a NRL team there on a number of occasions. I have inside knowledge that few have access to bug there is no need for jealousy or insults.

So Turnbull has left?, they still have Charlesworth...you enjoy death-riding the Mariners Johan you parasite...the egg on your face will be epic when they are still punching well above their weight in 12 months time.

Cannot agree kasey !! Petty self interest at the expense of the greater good. North and particularly South American are much more worthy of the place as everyone knows. You may note that as I predicted yesterday the mariners are imploding as their general manager of football operations and head of their hugely successful academy of excellence resigned today. You heard it here first!!! I know that you revere my knowledge of the game kasey and I appreciate your ongoing admiration.

They'd really have to qualify for something beyond the first phase of qualifiers as the Oceania qualifiers would be played simultaneously with the first and possibly second rounds of Asian qualifiers. But other than that something like that wouldn't be unreasonable. The other option is to completely dissolve Oceania and just fully incorporate into Asia.

The primary principle of helping others is that the overall quality and satisfaction is raised We as the bigger more financisl partner should continue to help NZ we always have and there is even more reason to keep on doing it and more so now we are getting much more of a share in the Australuan commercial sporting landscape. The rewards for putting out the helping hand of our Tasman Brother will be for all to see ib the shining future of football in our great country

This sounds like an act of sympathy for NZ. Australia had to go through what NZ just experienced vs. Mexico for decades. One difference between Au & NZ, is that Au moved to Asia cause we have a professional league which meant we were thumping teams 30 odd to zip in qualifiers. Thanks to the Nix, exposure of more Kiwis to professional football has happened, but take the Nix away (which could happen if the $$ left), and NZ is back to square one. IMO, NZ can stay in OFC until they build the game up nationally.

I think the best thing for the growth of football in oceania would be to have 2 Oceania teams qualify to enter the Asian qualifers in very early/early rounds. Or perhaps have an Oceania championships - runner up goes into first phase of Asian Qualifiers, winner goes into 2 nd phase. (or whatever the appropriate standard) The long term benefit is regular meaningful internationals not a better chance of qualification. Having two from Oceania means you are not just benefiting NZ.

it is a sensible proposal. Whilst it will be good for the All Whites it could also be beneficial for sides like Solomon Islands who have a football mad public, some superb technical skill at the youth level however practically no experience in playing outside of their islands. A win-win should it go ahead.

No doubt Sepp would like to see Qatar get close to qualifying before they get in as hosts. He would also be concerned that none of the Asian Arab states are near qualification level at the moment and need more spots to make Qatar 2022. Will be interested to see how many Brazilian Qataris are in their XI as we get closer to 2022.

This plan makes sense from an AFC power-broker point of view as it would effectively scupper the Nth &Sth American's efforts to get their mitts on the extra 0.5 WC slot.

When NZ win their Oceania group, they should join in the 3rd round where there is 5 groups of 4. I have been reading where NZ would go straight into the 4th round of 10 teams, 2 groups of five. I don't think that would be right. 3rd round of qualifying through Asia is a tougher task then qualifying through Oceania. If NZ does join, does that mean Australia will play against NZ? Should we still have Wellington Phoenix in the HAL? Are we helping the enemy?

I still think NZ should move permantely into Asia. NZ doesn't need Oceania, they created it but must now leave it. NZ should leave it. It means they will get more Asian qualifying matches full stop which equals more revenue. The Half spot for the OFC winner would be a massive boost, for say a Fiji, Solomon Islands, or Tahiti. And put the winner of oceania in the 3rd round of Asian Qualifying. But sned NZ to Asia full time, and do it say in 2018 after the 2018 world cup ends and the new 4 year cycle starts.

Sooner rather than later this will happen. I am against dissolving Oceania and the idea of putting the OFC winner into the 3rd Round of Asian qualifying appeals on so many levels. Then they have a fair route to qualification and the Middle East teams have another spot to aim for. Although I highly doubt they will prosper from this extra spot. This move will end up paying dividends to China or maybe North Korea again. Uzbekistan also has to love this idea. Really we have to start seeing the world's most populous regions being exposed to the World Cup. FIFA would love for China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam to one day make the greatest stage. An extra chance for this to occur has to be in FIFA's sights.
