Is it time to drop Brad Haddin?

By Tony Loedi / Roar Guru

That’s right, the player who has been in the best form of his career and arguable Australia’s most valuable player this summer needs to be dropped.

Before you get carried away I’m not talking about axing him from the Test team. I’m talking about the limited over stuff.

Surely our whole thought process should be geared towards the 2015 world cup and there are no guarantees Haddin will be playing in a years time. Remember he is 36 years old.

I personally would give Matthew Wade another crack at it even though he hasn’t exactly had great success in ODI’s or the T20 stuff.

There’s no doubt he is a very talented batsman. His keeping might not be at a test standard just yet, but I do think its more than adequate for the shorter forms of the game.

Plus its a great opportunity for his keeping to improve so he can be ready to take back his spot in the test side once Brad Haddin retires which due to his age can’t be that far away.

Besides this change our ODI squad is impressive. It’s extremely well balanced with Watson and Maxwell contributing as the 5th and 6th bowling options.

I was a little surpassed with the inclusion of James Pattinson though as he doesn’t have a great record as a limited overs bowler.

I’d like to see Dougie Bollinger in the squad as he has a fantastic one day record and he seems to be back to his best.

All in all though the Aussies are in a great position to win the 2015 World Cup on home soil.

With regard to the international T20 team I don’t want it to include any of the test players. We don’t need to be risking our test stars in the hit and giggle format.

And to be honest I think they would be easily replaced without the team losing too much as we have some of the best 20/20 players in the world.

For instance we could replace Warner, Watson, Haddin and Johnson with Shaun Marsh, Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade and Nathan Coulter-Nile (Or Mitchell Starc if he isn’t playing Tests) and that would still be a super side.

This is roughly how my Australian T20 team would look like:

Shaun Marsh
Aaron Finch
Nick Maddinson/Cameron White
Adam Voges/Moises Henriques
Mitch Marsh
Matthew Wade
Glenn Maxwell
James Faulkner
Clint Mckay
Xavier Doherty
Mitchell Starc/Nathan Coulter-Nile

The numbers 3 and 4 were difficult as there are a few different options you could do. I’d like to add Henriques to add some bowling depth but it could weaken the batting. Also if Cameron White continues his good form his leadership would be very valuable.

I believe this team would be hard to beat. What do you guys think?

Thank God we have an aging Brad Haddin in our Test Team - we would be in deep trouble without him. He is a legend & in the best form of his career. He must play ODI but not 20/20.

I think Cutting is a great inclusion, not just his bowling but his batting is damaging at the end of the innings.

And this is exactly why you're not a national selector.... You pick the best 11 available, that's how you win games. No rotations just pick you're best 11.

Finch Klinger Birt Burns Hodge Ludeman Henriques Hazelwood Cutting Bird Doherty Perhaps not that order but that XI could ruffle some feathers

Tony, there isn't a single redeeming feature for this article. Wade's aimless swiping when trying to score runs in 50 or 20 over matches is embarrassing (although I saw he scored 40 yesterday). That said, he has two test centuries and they don't grow on trees so perhaps he's just better suited to the longer stuff - assuming he learnt how to keep. In the meantime, until he retires Haddin plays when he wants. And I assume that is all the time.

Whiteman has been disappointing in bbl batting wise, otherwise id put him in the T20 squad with both Husseys, hodge, Klinger etc.

Geez I didn't realise Wade was so hated. I agree he has to improve his keeping for test matches which I think he can, but I think its more than adequate for T20's. The Keeper's are hardly in the game.

I don't see the value in a 36 year old playing all 3 forms of the game. I can understand him playing ODI till the world cup but no way should he play T20's.

i think on current form I would put Michael Hussey into my side in the number 3 spot - Also Hodge would be in the squad. He surely will go down as the unluckiest cricketer in history should have played more Internationals

Well, one could argue that the World T20 is only a short time away and if Haddin is deemed the #1 keeper fore the format he should retain the spot. But the T20 Worlds are never far away, and really the results even at the Worlds don't mean much. The shorter the format, the less important keeping ability is over batting. I'd rather Haddin didn't play T20, even though in many ways he is suited to the format, in order to keep him available for longer in the long game (even if he's not my first choice there, he is batter than the options the selectors are likely to consider). Should Wade keep in T20? Well, he can bat, but even in T20 format some level competency with the gloves is surely preferred. But if not Wade, who? Hartley is the best gloveman in state cricket but strikes me as a long form player only, Paine is not the player he promised to become or even the player he once was. I'm not sure about Ludeman in T20, though he would probably my choice to replace Haddin in the 50 over game after the world cup (the selectors will go with Wade). Maybe Whiteman.

No, keep Haddin in the ODI side. Hopefully he will be able to bring his test form into ODIs. Drop him after the WC, I'd imagine it would be his last tournament anyway. I don't see him retiring before the WC, so it would be beneficial to keep on playing him.

Hi Tony, happy to keep Haddin away from the T20 game as it will help his longevity playing test match cricket and help him reach next years ODI world cup. I think T20 is the best way to nurture the next keeper into the Aussie set up. I'm not sure what next years schedule is like but hopefully the brains at CA organize more 'A' tours this year like the tour to S Africa last year to help the development of our next batch of test and ODI players
