Aaron Finch is the new Marcus North

By Dennis Freedman / Roar Guru

That’s right good folks: Aaron Finch is the new Marcus North.

I’m not saying that Finch in the new North in any magnetic sense.

“Helmsman, please steer us on a course of 15 degrees Finch Finch West.”

Doesn’t work, does it?

No. I am referring to both Finch and North’s ability to make either 100, or alternatively 10 runs or less.

You see, both these players just have no middle ground.

In Tests, North had an average of 35 yet only made it to that figure 28% of the time

In ODIs, Finch also has an average of 35, yet has made it to that figure in only 36% of the time

If we take all their innings either greater than 100 or 10 runs or less, then North qualifies 63% of the time

Finch? 50%

Yep. Boom or Bust.

Both reach a century 14% of the time (if we use the commonly accepted practice of rounding to the nearest whole number)

North was 10 or less 49% of the time

Finch 36%

So, what’s my point?

I have no idea. However, I found the similarities interesting and now have some statistical numbers to throw at the boys when watching Finch at the pub.

“Geez, Finch is gone for seven”

“Yeah, did you know that one in every three innings, he will make 10 or less?”

Useful stuff.

He is opening the batting against the new ball... he does alot more than Shane Watson and nobody seems to want to sack Watson or compare him to Marcus North, what a crock... how do you compare an opener to a no.6 bat?? FYI he blasted 111 against Melbourne CC on the weekend and I'd back him to do the same vs South Australia this week... Alot of people seem to forget that he score numerous 50-80s vs India in the recent ODI series over there and then took it to another level and smacked England for two hundred in the ODIs and another 50 odd in the T20 in Hobart. Dennis Freedman find someone else to take pot shots at... Maybe do an article on Usman Kawaja, Shaun Marsh or Phil Hughes on how they are soft and wasted talents that will never amount to anything

I agree, Dennis. Finch is nowhere as good as North yet, but their inability to perform consistently is similar.

I agree Finch is way too inconsistent for my liking. Im giving him two years max, before he is dropped.

Not defending him, Marcus. He's not up to it. Just pointing out stats can be manipulated.

North has scored a gazillion Shield runs this season, not bad for an embarrassment.

steve, statistically speaking Finch averages 15 for the past three shield seasons. 15. Which probably means he spends less than 2 over at the crease.

Justin, Finch has averaged 15 at shield level over the last three years. That's less than most bowlers.

Did you know that around 27-29% of the time Michael Clarke, Hashim Amla and even Brian Lara will/would make 10 or less? To lift the terminology from above, if we take all the innings either greater than 100 or 10 runs or less, then Don Bradman qualifies 53% of the time. Finch-esque! Amla, Clarke and Lara made 100s around 14 to 14.5% of the time. North-Finch-esque! All very interesting, however the real gold is in the longer innings. If Bradman got to 250+ he would throw his wicket away 80% of the time and Lara 66%, while Clarke and Amla apply themselves post 250 and carry their bats. Yep, there is a lot of scope for statistical discussion. Not sure how relevant it is sometimes. Bradman making a ton or more 33% of the time blows my mind though.

I can see the logic in the comparison of their century conversion rates but the real story here is when you compare their 1st class records, how the hell did Finch get selected ahead of North for Australia A in first class games 6 months ago, probably a bigger balls up than the Marsh SA selection.

Give me Marcus North any day of the week! Finch is a Flat Track bully and that's it! His FC average gives it away!

Brayshaw reckons Finch will be the next Aussie ODI captain. That's a big call from a man who loves a big call.

Finch first centry for Australiia in this odi series he was dropped early as well. He seem's a little bit like a flat track bully. If the pitch is doing a bit or he is facing good bowling he looks suspect. He also plays with quite a bit of risk. The other thing that worries me is his lack of urgency. In the run chase in Perth he allowed far too many dot balls, even after he had his eye in and allowed the run rate to climb. Should be pushing singles as least.

Very true but I'd rather watch Finch play than the embarrassment that North has become. The Sixers surely are looking for the receipt for North. -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Completely different players. Finch is a sledgehammer while North is more of a grinder who occasionally freezes in the headlights. Has been in good FC form recently though.

Interesting statistics. Just wonder how every other batsman stacks up.

Can't really compare First Class to List A. First Class Record North has 37 from 353 innings: 10% Finch has 2 from 68 innings: 2.9% List A North has 9 from 165 innings: 5.4% Finch has 7 from 82 innings: 8.5%
