Cameron Smith re-signs with Melbourne Storm

By News / Wire

Cameron Smith will be a one-club player for Melbourne in the NRL, the hooker agreeing to terms on a four-year contract extension with the Storm.

The Storm, Queensland State of Origin and Australian captain had been linked with a big money move to the Brisbane Broncos but has opted to play out his career with the Victorian club.

The new deal will keep Smith in Melbourne until the end of the 2018 NRL season, at which stage he will be 35 years-old.

He is set to surpass Matt Geyer (262 games) as the most capped Storm player when his side play Penrith at AAMI Park on Saturday.

Smith will discuss his decision to stay in Melbourne at a media conference at AAMI Park with coach Craig Bellamy later on Tuesday.

X, Muzz You are both kidding surely.......The Roar is about discussions, opinions and passing on information. I have a big network and a heap of stuff comes across my desk. If I ever choose to pass something on to the Roar it is always in good faith based on the info at the time. Trust me when I tell you that Cam was "GONE" last Oct....I am happy to pass that on, but understand that he changed his mind. The Storm NEVER even made him an offer before Xmas they were that certain that he was gone. Thats fine if u cant accept that, I will still sleep.

As a Broncos fan I welcome this news because I believe Andrew McCullough could well end up being the number 1 hooker in the game by the time he (McCullough) retires. He's getting better every season.

When a former owner and a current owner both tell you he is gone then he is gone, but that was last October and it is my view that a 3 week holiday in Brisbane with in laws was what changed their minds. You love them, but Melb is just far enough.

BA I have no problem with you or anyone bagging me but get your facts straight. Did you read this on Jan 23? http://www.theroar.com.au/2014/01/23/melbourne-storm-continue-to-grow-with-heart-deal/ In part it said: High on the priority list is maintaining their elite players and skipper Cam Smith is top priority. When season 2013 had finished there is no doubt that the Storm owners had conceded that they would lose their champion hooker to the Brisbane Broncos to a massive $1.4m a year deal over three years. He clearly did not want to leave the club he loves but he also had pressure from family who are based in Brisbane. Make no mistake that Cam Smith was gone, but the body language since he has come back from holidays with his wife and family has underlined how important the Storm is in his life. Smith will have to take a massive pay cut of around $1m if he stays with the Storm and, like former teammates Greg Inglis, will say “no” to a massive Broncos offer. I put my Roar ‘Guru’ status up for grabs last October when I suggested that Cam Smith would sign with the Broncos, and prior to Christmas, I changed the suggestion to 80/20. I am now saying that I am backing the influential Storm owners to keep their skipper and re-sign him for three years. Circumstances change, people change their minds, but one thing is certain, the Melbourne Storm will continue to grow.

As an AFL follower who keeps an eye on the Storm it is good to see Cam Smith stay. I actually like when he comes on to AFL 360. A true sports lover and keeps abreast of development in AFL that has even a slight relation to league. That's why the hosts really appear to like him. By the way is there an equivalent AFL person who pops onto the league 360 show or equivalent?

I'm glad to see Smith stay with the Storm. I fear for the game in Melbourne if they don't have a successful team.

A winning club but at the end of his tenure at the Storm, but as it stands the "Big 3" plus Bellamy only have one premiership to show for this supposed golden era.

You could look at it in two ways: no Smith to the Broncos could dissuade DCE from signing on there as it will be a much weaker team without Smith at hooker...OR it could mean more salary cap cash for Brisbane to make a huge offer for DCE? I sincerely hope the former.

I read Scott's comments that Mrs Smith said it was her or the Storm. Wow. They're getting divorced? Good call Scot!!

As a Broncos supporter I say this is great news. Cameron Smith Is the Storm and it's great to see a player stick it out with his club. Being with a winning club probably doesn't hurt either. It wouldn't surprise me to see him end up as the head coach once Bellamy has had enough. Any anyway we don't need him! We have ...ummm .....

Great news for the Storm! The one club player is so rare these days so I always enjoy seeing it eventuate. I wonder if this will have a bearing on DCE staying at Manly? Top players aren't going to the Broncos anymore. Cam Smith is just another to weigh up his options and decide against a move to Brisbane. Locking in Griffin could be very detrimental to the Broncos in the long run.

Brilliant news. Great to see champions like Cam Smith be one club men. Doesn't have the flashiness, but probably the most influencial player in any team since Lockyer.
