Queensland‘s quest for a ninth straight Origin series victory begins tonight when they host New South Wales in the first game of the 2014 State of Origin series.

Join us for live scores and commentary from 7:55pm AEST, with kickoff expected at 8:16pm AEST.

There are plenty of new faces in NSW’s Origin squad, but thankfully most of the players selected are in great form and are more than capable of taking the game to Queensland tonight.

Josh Reynolds and Trent Hodkinson have been rightfully rewarded for their superb start to the season for the Bulldogs, and will be tasked with guiding NSW around the park against a superb and experienced Queensland outfit.

Jarryd Hayne’s inclusion at fullback is also a big positive for NSW. The Eels custodian has often thrived at Origin level and he represents the X-factor in attack for the Blues. He has been in superb form at the Eels, reminiscent of his form in 2009.

If he fires, NSW’s chances of securing a win increase significantly.

Like all Origin matches however, the key to victory lies in the battle upfront. The Maroons have often bullied NSW into submission at Lang Park and invariably dominate territory and possession as a result. The forward battle will be similarly decisive tonight.

Last season, the Blues were well beaten by the Maroons after a poor opening 20 minutes which saw Queensland’s forwards make metres at will.

If the Maroons win the early arm wrestle, and superstars Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk are given space and time in attack, they will blow this game wide open. It’s happened before at this very ground and could happen again.

The Blues also have to make sure they keep errors to an absolute minimum. They must cherish possession and play the percentages well if they are to keep pace with the Maroons.

The first try is crucial in an Origin match and if the Blues can score it, they may just develop the confidence and belief needed to secure a memorable victory.

Another fast start from the Maroons, however, will most likely see them dominate tonight’s contest.

While this Blues team certainly has what it takes to compete well, the Maroons at home remain difficult to tip against.

But Origin matches are usually tight contests, so it’s unlikely there will be much in it. Whoever stands up in the crucial moment will determine which way this game goes.

What do you mean, "We"? You are not a player. You are just a guy in front of his TV.

Myles coming in with uppercuts(using his arm) a lot after a blue got tackled would be one of them, or rolling his massive head on their face

Qld resorting to their dirty tactics. Ha,Ha how funny, because we all know NSW are angels. What a stupid comment but expected from a blue arse supporter. You tossers only won by 4 points and it would of been leveled if JT didn't miss 2 conversions. Qld played poorly end of.....

Yes Phil, I neglected to mention the JT grubber kick how that was a QLD scrum feed is beyond me. It was as clear as clear could be that NSW fell on the ball cleanly. There is so much riding on the end result SoO needs to be adjudicated externally from the video ref, if F1 drivers can speak to their team manager at 300km/h surely communication to an onfield ref can happen. That grubber kick is classic example the play had come to a halt with the ball safely in the hands of a NSW player, it was adjudicated on by Shayne Hayne, the video ref had every opportunity via the Channel 9 coverage being an instantaneous replay to over rule Shayne Hayne and reverse his decision for the correct decision. What would have happened if QLD had scored off this and JT converted and they won the game. All those people who punted money on a 1-12 NSW victory have been robbed by one crucially poor decision that could have been adjudicated on by the video ref. This would give both sides a short 60 second breather whilst waiting for the correct decision. I am not advocating the video refs intervention during play for everything just when there is a stoppage in play with a decision pending from the Ref and only in SoO not to be extended to the NRL, SoO are special games that deserve extra screen time- I mean how long does the Super Bowl go for? We don't want 'that' format but something that allows the correct decisions to be arrived at. This would draw the length of the game out for additional sponsorship monies and give the players more recovery time to better cope with increased speed and intensity of the game.

Take off your blue tinted glasses. Gal was the dirtiest player on the field, elbowing in every ruck. NSW were holding down in tackles for ever. Yes there were refs calls against nsw but qld playerd played fair. Watch the game closer and learn rugby league. Just watch it again. You will see, the evidence is on video

Agree. The 2 Hayne's were the big players last night. Jarryd won the game for NSW, Shayne did everything he coukd to get Queensland a vuctory. In the last 5 minutes Hayne made at least 3 incorrect rulings. I thought the most laughable was the so called knock on when Slater kicked the ball straight into the arm of a NSW player. Clearly not a knock on. In fact it was one of the most blatant displays of bias by a referee I have ever seen in Australia

Very well said, spot on. Sick of Queensland getting the best of the refereeing calls, especially during crucial periods of the games. Hayne was blatantly biased during the last 15 minutes and made several clearly incorrect calls and should have to answer for it. And he shouldn't get another S of O game this season if the NSWRL have any balls !

The NRL needs to sit down with a panel of experts including Shane Hayne and watch this game again, pause the coverage at the poor judgements throughout this game and insist he explain his interpretation. That offload from Slater late in the game was clearly lost forward by Hodges without any interference from a NSWelshman. If your in doubt as to what happened in the play then as a ref you ought to be entitled to ask upstairs- one look at that would have given NSW the scrum feed they deserved. The referring panel of experts should then mark the refs mistakes and whoever makes the least ought to be the preferred ref for any potential deciders in the series, which won't be necessary this year. The other call was the assistant ref's call relating to the QLD player Hodges (again)who deemed was milking a penalty and yet Shane Hayne went with a QLD hold down, looking back at that footage in slow motion the assistant ref got it right Hodges was pulling the tackled player by the jersey back towards himself whilst he was lying on his back on the ground. JTs pass was clearly forward that gave QLD a try. It feels to me like we are moving back into a yesteryear period when QLD couldn't find a win and the ref steps in plays god for the NRL marketing gurus to have a field day. Wake up and realise that the poor referring decisions are a massive turn off for everyone involved in the game- your not god and we eventually will hold you accountable- your a professional and get paid as a professional- your now on report, cross your arms in the air and turn up at the match review committee for your fine and subsequent suspension. Perhaps then you might call it as your assistant sees it and as the rest of us see it. Well done NSW for winning the 100th Origin Game on QLD soil, it was a monumental and inspirational effort and what I would consider to be a shift in your mentality towards dominating QLD who are very beatable you proved this last night and may we win this series for the betterment of the Origin Series, the game its players, coaches and supporters.

I'm thinking the same thing. First try QLD should never have had the ball to begin with but second was legit.

This shows that JT may get you into the highlights reel but Cronk will win you the game -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Agreed. While I would never have picked him, he tackled his ass off tonight. We need another one of him if Hoffman was to be dropped and it ain't Bird! He's sitting in Canberra wasted while we stuff around with bird and Watguts that give away more meters in penalties than they make in hit ups. Watguts' penalty tonight was just dumb dumb dumb.

I just spent the night in a huge shed full of Queenslanders and they'd all be having a laugh at you right now. QLD's first try came off the back of a scrum after Tate knocked the ball on then NSW went over the side line (no advantage). G.I. Strip was a farce. Only for QLD to get the same rub 2 minutes later. Tonight QLD had all the calls go their way bit the NSW defence didn't read the script.

Agree, banana benders got the best of the calls in the last 10 minutes, when anything goes including forward passes. offside, gouging and elbowing to the head. Nat Myles landed a few of his customary flying head butts too. Absolutely heroic defence to keep them out and a great result in the end. Bring on ANZ Stadium for SoO II, do we really have to wait 3 weeks?

Qld's second try. JT maaasive forward pass the play before the scoring one. G.I. strips ball down your end but somehow NSW is adjudged to have knocked on? That kick into Hodkinson in dying minutes is a QLD ball how? You are clutching at straws. And that's not to mention Slater's offside on numerous attacking kicks, Qld defensive line offside for most of 2nd half.... I'm not alone here either pal.

I'm pretty sure QLDs 10 missed tackles at HT were 9 from thurston lol. Redeemed himself a little defensively at the end but still has to bear the blame. Haynes simply a freak though. 2009 form not looking too far away. Just a solo hundred metre try while beating up to 8 defenders away lol

Hayne would've been kicking a lot because of his massive boot and NSW often trapped inside their 35. Farah as I said last year seems to think that he's the best kick in the game and takes it even when the HB is calling for the ball. They weren't brilliant by any means but very solid. Reynolds was probing well early but fell away a little, hodkinson was quiet offensively though and his goal kicking was a tad shabby tonight. Didnt really offer anything Pearce couldn't except maybe a better short range kicking game. Although when Hayne goes off like that you just gotta give him the ball as much as possible. He was definitely the master cog in the blues game.
