San Antonio Spurs vs Miami Heat: 2014 NBA Finals Game 5 live scores, blog

By The Roar / Editor

Game Summary

SPURS are the champions of the NBA

Spurs 104-87 Heat

We didn’t even see the end of the game. Everyone just left the court. LBJ was shaking hands with Gregg Popovic and Tim Duncan before the clock had even expired.

Scenes in San Antonio a little different to Miami last year. Where’s the confetti?

Now to the action on the court. It’s been emphatic, to say the least, from the Spurs. Back-to-back finals series yields a finals series victory. Mills was dynamic off the bench – outshining the Heat’s role guys with his efforts. 17 points today sealed the deal after a dominant 2nd quarter from the Spurs. 14 of those came in the third quarter, with threes raining down.

Duncan, Ginobli and Parker were dominant. Kawhi proved he is going to be the man in the future. To go toe-to-toe with the King and come out on top speaks to how good he is, at just 23.

LeBron tried hard, but didn’t get enough support. Bosh and Wade were thoroughly disappointing. As has been highlighted, the Heat bench didn’t make things easier for them.

San Antonio’s shooting was out of this world in Games 3 and 4, while persistence, effort and consistency sealed a largely unspectacular final game.

It was a worthy way to cap off a spectacular NBA finals series. Well done San Antonio.

Game Preview

The San Antonio Spurs are just one win away from claiming another NBA Finals crown, but we can be sure that LeBron James and the Miami Heat will not go down without a fight. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10:00am (AEST).

Game 5 sees the 2014 NBA Finals return to San Antonio, a city in high spirits following their teams’ impressive showing in Miami, securing a 3-1 series lead.

There is good reason for the Spurs to be confident today – no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals, and with home court advantage also leaning in the Spurs favour, it all seems like a pretty simple equation at this point.

The Spurs will win (at least one of the next three games), Tim Duncan and co. will secure their legacy, and the Heat will be forced to reassess.

But can we ever be certain in the NBA Finals? The simple answer here is certainly not.

In Game 6 of the 2012/13 Finals, Heat fans flocked to the doors in the dying stages of the game – they were certain their team had no hope.

And we all know what happened next.

The Heat willed the game into overtime, forced a Game 7, and claimed their second consecutive NBA title.

With that in mind, LeBron James and the Miami Heat enter the AT&T Center today with the opportunity to make history.

Speaking in a press conference leading up to Game 5, James stated: “History is made to be broken, and why not me be a part of it? That would be great. That would be a great story line, right?”

The first step will be a win here in Game 5.

But as good as LeBron James is, can a champion player do enough to overcome a champion team?

The Spurs are doing everything right in this series, and are deserved winners at this point.

It would take a miracle for the Heat drag themselves out of the hole they are in, but it is hard to write-off the will of King James.

Well in great believe and expectations of the heat ,things went upside down but in my capacity they were to win.like their play from beginning.nice defence understanding their role at the respective positions and being unselfixh with the ball.hopefully they arent letting the opportunity jst go openly next tym .big up coach popovich.

They won simply because they are better.... They've been the best team for 15 years now. The only fault of the Spurs this season is they didn't beat the Heat 4-0 in the finals.... that would've been much better! Heat are just like their fans.... soft as butter.

Stunning performance by the Spurs. I tipped them but in 6 or 7 not in a easy 5 Totally dominated Miami for pretty much the entire series even the game they lost they should have won. The most impressive part for me was how attractive they play, it's great to watch. They play as a team! they share the ball, they find the open man, everyone plays a roll and understands their role. Popovich is a great great coach

Repeat or redemption as I liked to call the 2013-14 NBA finals. And how the Spurs gained redemption. In reality they could've swept the Heat 4/0, but for final quarter in game 2. Big Tim Duncan joins Kobe Byrant on 5 rings now. And 'King' LeBron James falls to 2 wins and 3 defeats in NBA finals.

I remember when Tim Duncan got drafted at the end of the Jordan era (Patty would have been like 9 years old). That seems like a lifetime ago, but he looks like he hasn't aged at all. I think he might be a wizard.

Great scenes after the game - Duncan, Ginobli - emotional stuff. And, of course, 2 Aussies with Championship rings - Patty Mills and Baynes standing on the dias with an Australian flag.

The Basketball world order has been restored - Spurs are Champions again!! Been a Spurs supporter since 1998 and for some reason every year this side gets severely underrated and their achievements over looked. I have to say this title is the sweetest yet..... dominated the season and then annihilated the Heat in the final series - doesn't get much better than that! King Duncan gets another ring ;)

Mills is certainly the best Australian player to win a NBA Championship.

Spurs have been the best team all season. As a fan of Lebron, the threepeat would have been good to see, but the Heat haven't looked the same this season. Compare to the Spurs who deservedly had the best record, end up taking out the title. And Patty Mills, best Aussie players gets a ring and plays an important role, a new golden age for Australian basketball? Can't wait for the world championships soon.

See, this is where the misconception is so prominent. The only reason you don't trade for stars is if you are lucky enough to get them through the draft. Spurs are absolutely a team of stars; (Duncan 5 x Rings, 14 x AS, 2 x MVP), Parker (4 x Rings, 6 x AS), Ginobilli (4 x Rings, 2 x AS) and throw in Leonard who is on the rise. There STAR players, plus elite role players and all time great coach was needed to overthrow the Heat. I just don't understand how people think they are a bunch of potatoes who won on sheer will power or something?
