You've got to feel for Anthony Griffin

By Eli Cole / Roar Rookie

Imagine giving seven years of your life to an organisation just to be kicked out because someone who walked out six years ago wanted his job back.

Unfortunately for Anthony Griffin, who has been a great fit as Brisbane coach for the last four years, this has taken place.

Wayne Bennett wants his coaching spot back to help rebuild the Broncos and that means Griffin’s stint is over.

But Bennett can’t deliver the same success to Brisbane as he did when he was the coach from 1988-2008. Nor will his presence alone help the rebuilding process of a once successful club.

Griffin still had a lot to offer to the Broncos and could’ve done a much better job helping the players, most of whom he helped develop through under-20s, deliver a premiership.

Corey Parker backed Griffin in the days leading up to the blockbuster $4 million, three-year signing of ‘supercoach’ Bennett. It would be embarrassing for Parker to have been ignored, and what’s best for the players has been decided by the board with minimal discussion with senior players.

Griffin was forced to make very difficult and controversial decisions, like asking Sam Thaiday to step down as captain, to try and bring the club success. Unfortunately it has all been for nothing.

I wish all the best to Anthony Griffin and his family as he enters the post-Broncos stage of his life. I sincerely hope he can live up to his potential as a coach.

I also wish the best to Benny, and I hope that he can deliver on his multi-million dollar contract. But at this stage I’m not convinced.

Blame the Broncos management for doing this, not Bennett

I'm just going to throw this out there. Before the season started hook was told he needed to be in the top 4 by the origin period. The were there and abouts but by all accounts they should currently sit 2nd or third with tough, but (very) winnable games lost against roosters, souths, sharks, and Panthers. Whether you can blame the players for those losses for not holding their nerve, or the coach is up to you, but it's a wide thought opinion that Bennett coached teams rarely lose in those situations. Hook simply lost too many close ones for the club to overlook Bennett.

When Bennett left he had them one game from the GF only to be beaten by Melbourne in the last minute when GI scored after Ashton Sims dropped the ball trucking out of his qtr. Bennett was only responsible for taking Darius Boyd and Nick Emmet to St George. To give an indication of where the club was heading and the faith they put in the U20s players being the future, the following players all left at the end of 2008; Greg Eastwood, Ben Hannant, David Stagg, Michael Ennis, Denan Kemp, Joel Moon, Reece Robinson and Shane Perry. So the Broncos let go 10 first grade players in one season. They signed Israel Folau, Ben Te'o, Lagi Setu and Aaron Gorrell. 2009 saw Dave Taylor and Karmichael Hunt leave. All those players left AFTER it was announced Bennett was going. He had the club in great shape. Management failed dismally. No, the start of the poor years was when the 2008 and 2009 teams saw so many players leave and there was such poor recruitment to build around the young guys they had.

I think the biggest thing working against Hook is that he's coached many of the same players under the same system for a long time, since under 20's. Give him some time at another club as an assistant coach to see how other coaches and players work and I think he'd be a great coach. I just think he struggles to get the best out of players he hasn't worked with for long

He's had four years to rebuild and ,given the amount of rep players in the team, hasn't been anywhere near as successful as you would expect. He made Thiaday captain ahead of Parker(the then co-captain) which failed, he over saw the hiring of Scott Prince which went no where, he has consistently played players out of position which hasn't paid off, he has shown loyalty to underperforming players while dumping more consitant ones to reserve grade. I like Hook as a coach, so I'm just putting things in perspective, but if he was at another club he would probably been moved on already. Four years is a long stint as a first grade coach these days so I don't think he's too hard done by.

I have a lot of time for Anthony Griffin however there are other things that need to be taken into consideration other than winning games. A small matter of salary cap investigations. Unable to get Barba firing. Players out on the drink may have been the final straw. If I were Paul White I'd be a tad worried as well.

Maybe he can move down the Road to Gold coast.. I am sure that he would sort this mob out a bit.. Meesta Cartwright seems to be struggling to get any improvement going. one week terrific, next week terrible..

Griffin can feel very hard done by. In the 8 games the Broncos have lost this year they have only been at an average of 5 points on the wrong side of the ledger. Had they won a few of those games they lost by 1 or 2 points they would be equal top of the table. You wonder if the Bennett bid would of been successful in this case. A game of inches.

Meesta Griffin is leaving Brisbane with the makings of a great young team.. Much more promise than Meesta Bennett ran away from those six years ago! I suppose that this time next year Wayne will be taking all the credit for these kids 'coming of age' ... it's a Cruel World in Sport!. Good Luck Anthony.. There are a lot of clubs that will be looking at what you have achieved..

Unbelievable decision imo as the Broncos are currently travelling ok and have improved vastly from last year. Reinstating Bennett is more about ensuring other former players (e.g. Ben Ikin especially) are well positioned in a couple of years time to run the business. The Board should have waited until the end of the finals series to see where the Broncos finished before making a decision on Griffin. This type of decision will likely push the players even more to perform this year. More importantly will be the players attitude next year.

Last time I checked Broncs were on the verge of finishing top 4 and the Knights should come last. Have lost so much respect for WB as it is clear all he cares about is WB and now the Tinkler cash train is gone, he just wants to suck up to Murdoch.

Griffin won the under 20s as we all know... He showed huge loyalty by sticking with those players in A-grade. I think it's fair to say the players haven't delivered. Corey Norman was well below potential for example... It shows one of two things: a. The gulf between 20s and opens is enormous, b. Groffin just couldn't develop players to their full potential. I think he is a good first grade coach- I just don't know if he was ready to take on a side like the broncs straight up.

Anthony Griffens four years have come to nothing, well lets just wait and see about that 2014 still has a long way to go yet and Brisbane are a genuine outside chance of winning it. So far this tear they have belted Manly and lost very close games to both Easts and Souths so they have clearly exhibited they can match it with the big boys.On the weekend they came from ten down to power over the top of the much hyped Warriors Young Hunt is starting to show some real class solving the biggest problem they have had since Locker retired...the lack of a quality playmaker. Also Milford had already signed before Bennett came on the scene and the team is clearly on the up heading toward a premiership window so what exquisite timing by Bennett arriving after Griffen has rebuilt the squad. I actually hope they win it this year,it will make the board look pretty stupid and put a hell of a lot of pressure on Bennett, taking over the defending premiers at best you can tread water the only way really is down.

I think this move by the Broncos is gonna backfire big time. I think Wayne Bennett has lost what he had. The modern game has passed him by. Paul White, the Broncos CEO, is on borrowed time from what I can gather. Bennett wants Ben Ikin there as CEO. I really liked what Griffin was building at the Broncos, with a better record at the Broncos, than Bennett has in the same time at Newcastle, the board has erred massively in recruiting Bennett. I expect to see a very different Broncos team next year, I expect it to be filled with the Dad's army of player Bennet seems to like.

Bennett has always looked out for No1,as I said before ,the Knights are a great opportunity for him to earn some real credibility and show everyone he can coach average players to perform at a high standard every week.Bellamy is a standout with Toovey and maybe Hasler up there somewhere.Bennett walking out on the Knights has people hoping the Broncs win this year,Griffin deserves a bit better than this rubbish.
