Fletcher versus Harvey in the race to 400

By Alex Moulds / Roar Rookie

An ageing Dustin Fletcher has opted for season-ending surgery on his finger, causing many to briefly think this could the end of a stellar career.

I’m 18 – Fletcher’s career started before I was born.

In my 18 years I have already suffered five broken arms, a busted nose, a torn hamstring, the occasional muscle injury, and most recently a season-ending broken collarbone.

22 grueling seasons have been thrown at Fletcher, and yet he seems determined to go around again and ink his name in the history books.

Only two players – Hawthorn’s Michael Tuck (426) and Richmond’s Kevin Bartlett (403) have managed over 400 senior VFL/AFL matches. Fletcher has played 393 games since his 1993 debut.

Fletcher is just seven games from joining an exclusive club. But looking to beat him to the summit of 400 mountain is Brent Harvey.

There’s the possibility Boomer will play seven more games this season, which would bring him to a career total of 388 – only five games behind Fletcher.

If both play again in 2015, we’re in for an intriguing individual battle to see who can stay on the park and reach the 400-game milestone first.

Kudos to both of them..To be able to do it over the course of 20 seasons..no joke..both are premiership players..are still in the best 22 of their team..survive the evolution of football over two decades..have the will to take care their bodies..go through pre-season demands to be in shape before each season proper..i really respect them..So for the sake of AFL..both will reach the 400 milestone and motivate the younger ones with the belief that long career is there in the AFL..

How good would it be if both did it in the same game?

It maybe a bit of a cheat compared to how Tucky and KB did it, but how handy would Boomer be playing as a sub in the latter part of his career.

Along with Travis Cloke and Nick Daffy, Fletcher is one of the most over-rated players of the past two decades. Brilliant as third-man up, but vulnerable one-on-one under pressure against a good opponent.

Considering Harvey is still in the top 2 most important players for the Kangaroos I would say he's not just playing so he can reach 400. The sad thing is too at 39, Fletcher is still an important part of the Dons back line. His spoiling, ability to read the game and precision kick in's are still vital

Would hate Harvey or Fletcher to just hang on to play 400, earn your spot each week that's all we ask as supporters the rest will be what it will be.
