AFL silly season is about to start

By Ian Montgomery / Roar Pro

The finals are only a week away but the end of the season also signals the silly season, with trades, free agencies and drafts.

It’s especially relevant for clubs looking to re-build, stock up and generally improve their playing lists.

Before the finals kick into full swing it’s timely to look at who’s available, who’s on the move and what clubs might be willing to offer the right price to get what they need.

There are actually few free agents still available on the market, with all the focus on James Frawley and Shaun Higgins.

Higgins is rumoured to have generated interest from at least four clubs, with Geelong and North Melbourne believed to be most interested. Higgins has had a patchy career, mostly due to injuries, but does offer potential suitors a player in the prime of his career with silky skills and an x-factor about him.

He can play forward, midfield and off half back. So who is in the box seat to snare him? He would be a valuable additional for the Kangaroos to add further versatility and goal scoring options. The Bombers could use him to add more midfield depth and to cover Paul Chapman’s eventual exit, and Jason Winderlich’s goals up forward.

Frawley is the most talked about of the two, and a number of clubs, including Geelong, Hawthorn, Gold Coast and Collingwood, have expressed an interest. Melbourne could be a big winner from this with a potential extra first round pick in a strong draft. With ageing backlines Geelong, Hawthorn and Fremantle would be good fits and would provide Frawley with an opportunity to play finals.

Jarrod Waite, James Gwilt and Ryan O’Keefe lead a small list of other potential free agents who could attract interest. Brisbane have a number of talented tall forwards coming through but may benefit from a player such as Waite to lead a young attack for two years and then exit to allow the youngsters to flourish.

O’Keefe has been linked to Melbourne but could offer some real value for a season at St Kilda, who have struggled to find a small forward option since Stephen Milne retired. A season from O’Keefe to mentor players such as Eli Templeton before settling into a coaching role would be a good fit.

Gwilt may not attract too much attention and is a strong chance to stay at the Saints, although teams light on for defenders such as Melbourne may seek some experience.

Outside free agency the trade period has the potential to be either a dull affair or throw up a number of surprises. There are a few quality players who have yet to sign, headlined by Kristian Jaksch and Jono O’Rourke from Greater Western Sydney.

As former first round draft picks they could provide plenty of interest. Assuming the Saints finish last, they could potentially position themselves to pocket some real quality players to help re-stock their list. With Jaksch wanting to return to Victoria and out of contract, the Saints could get their hands on him via the pre-season draft.

A three or four year contract could snare Jaksch without having to give up anything at the trade table. This would open the door for the number one pick to snare one of the most talked up midfielders in Christian Petrecca. A swap of their second round pick (around number 19) for the Swans’ out-of-contract Tim Membrey also provides a mid-sized lead up forward who adds some much needed goal kicking to their squad.

Melbourne have already raised the option of trading their second round pick. A deal involving Tom Mitchell and Sam Reid and the Swans first round pick (with Nick Malceski signing as a free agent) could be a win for both clubs, especially if the Dees have a first round compensation pick for Frawley.

Port Adelaide may be in the market for another tall forward, but are they willing to trade anyone from their emerging group? Perhaps they should look across town at Lewis Johnston as a secondary forward option. They would also benefit from a second ruck option and could find a player such as Luke Lowden useful.

Jack Watts has had a tough time at Melbourne. Is there a team out there that believes they may be able to get the most out of this enigmatic player? Could Melbourne and Carlton trade players in an attempt to get the most out of them? Watts for Matthew Watson and Mitch Robinson could be a unique swap.

Will GWS or the Suns look to top up on one or two more experienced players? Will players such as Tayte Pears, Jeff Garlett or Mitch Brown seek more opportunities at other clubs?

The Bulldogs are the other club constantly linked in a search for a tall forward. Can they wait to snare a quality youngster and build the team around them? Maybe they could swap their first round pick with Melbourne to secure the best tall forward on the draft, Patrick McCartin. Shaun Higgins could move across and the Dogs could secure Melbourne’s second round draft pick and pick two.

I would be interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on any rumours or ideas on how your club can get the players or draft picks they need to be competitive.

For what? Have heard James Aisha is potential trade bait but is a long way short of beams

Yeah...but 2nd round? He has been in that system for 2 years and only got 1?...2? games. 3rd or 4th round maybe. I'd prefer some of GC, GWS or Geelong's tall forwards.

Is Watts a proper forward? I thought he fits under the title of "utility".

What played well in the NEAFL and stepped straight into the top of the table side picking up 30 possessions. Good players in good systems are worth grabbing if they can't get a game. It's not their fault they play in a sub standard league

But isn't that the NEAFL? Even Sydney doesn't rank performance in that system. Look at poor Tommy Mitchell.(WCE 2015.)

Was picked with Swans first round selection, has had 2 years in a quality system, kicks goals and did not look out of place when making his debut. In comparison to drafting a young forward out of under 18's he's much better value so a second round pick is fair - trade period usually results in clubs trying to get players for less than they're worth so I'm sure opposition clubs would try to offer third round picks

Can anyone explain what's good about Membrey? Did he kick lots of goals in a minor comp or something? Why is he worth a second round pick?

If the swans were looking to off load Membrey and get something decent the best they could hope for would be an early second round pick. Membrey would be a good fit at the Suns. While they have Day, Lynch and Dixon they are all similar types. A lead up forward who kicks goals would be a good change up - similar to Gunston at Hawthorn. A complex trade deal with the Saints trading Jack Stevens to Collingwood for their first round pick (around 8-9), which could be on traded to the Suns with the Saints second round pick (19) for Sam Day and and Suns 2nd round pick and then the Suns get Membrey for pick 19. The swans get a top 20 draft pick, the Suns get a better balanced forward, the Saints get a power forward with 50 games experience and maintain pick 1 and the Pies get a young midfielder who can break the lines and help re-energise their midfield. Win win for all parties I would have thought.

Pretty sure the Swans would struggle to fit Frawley into their slary cap. Losing a few players is the price the Swans pay for signing Buddy for 9 years. Word is the Kangaroos are interested in Waite, they may shape as a big player cone trade week. Theyve largely been focused on the inteenal development of a core group of young players but have failed to bridge the gap this year to the top 5 clubs so may be looking to change up their list. McMillan, Black and Wright could all attract plenty of interest

Olivia, Mitchell only played 6 games this year and he is too good a player for the Swans to keep if he only plays occasional games. I don't believe the Swans can play all of Tippett, Franklin, and Reid together on the forward line. Is there a place for Reid on the back line? It does become harder for a team to keep all their players after sustained success as a number of players have to be prepared to be paid significantly less than they can get on the open market. The salary cap becomes a problem. The best outcome would be to trade them for first round draft picks or to swap them to fill a hole in your list. The Swans are not short of midfielders or tall forwards.

Can anyone tell me why the Swans would want to part with Mitchell and Reid? If they force our hand I'd be playing very hard ball on both and let them end up in the pre season lottery if a suitable trade - suitable for the Swans that is - can't be reached. I'd be tempted to see what we could trade out of GWS OR GCS for them. A trade for Membrey should be doable if we get something decent in return. I honestly don't think Malceski will leave; those stars on his back have real meaning for him. Membrey for Frawley could be a win/win.

Ken Hinkley seems to be able to get the best out of players, maybe Watts or Matthew Watson could be on Port's radar

Not to replace Tabs. Rather Pav and McPharlin. Could be CHB or...as Pav wrinkles up, let Pav replace McPharlin at CHB and Watts warms Apeness' spot. Trade back Sylvia? He! He! He!

I'd stick with the young freo forwards over Watts. If they got Watts it might make a guy like Taberner consider a move back home to Vic. What would Freo have to offer up to Melb in exchange for Watts?

I wrote a similar article which I'm guessing will be published tomorrow suggesting Louie Johnston to Port as well.

If Sam Reid is a potential trade target, I'd love to see Collingwood do their best to unite him with his brother. If he can stay injury free, he's a very good player.
