Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter ousted

By News / Wire

Wests Tigers have let go head coach Mick Potter, with the NRL club deciding not to renew his contract for next season.

Chief executive Grant Mayer said Potter had been given three opportunities over the past six weeks to present his plans for the Tigers to the board.

But they, along with club management, agreed a “fresh approach” was needed.

The Tigers will begin their search for a replacement immediately, with the new head coach to take the reins no later than October 27.

Mayer thanked Potter for his services over the past two years, acknowledging the difficult circumstances he faced at the helm.

“This has been a difficult decision for everyone involved but one that the club believes is in the best interests of a successful future for Wests Tigers,” the CEO said in a statement.

“Clearly there will be many disappointed fans as, to his credit, Mick has developed a strong following here.

“However, we ask that you trust that we have made this decision in the interests of a stronger, unified club, following a rigorous and fair process.”

Mayer said whoever is appointed coach will be given complete control over the appointment of all key football staff and his playing roster.

Potter had been under pressure to retain his position after failing to reach the finals two years in a row.

His contract with the club expired at season’s end and last week fronted the Tigers board, days after the NRL appointed new non-executive directors Marino Go, Rosemary Sinclair and Lucio Di Bartolomeo.

Potter’s assistants Todd Payten and David Kidwell have been linked to the top job at the Tigers, as has axed Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin.

It's a story as old as the hills. When you become the boss, change things. You must never be seen to agree, tolerate, or approve what your predecessors did. Tobias - spot on. The obvious thing to do is to sack someone and the coach is the obvious, knee jerk choice. The new coach will have to be able to rein in the overdone egos, (not only Farrah's). If he does, it will be by smacking people down and he will then be blamed for the inevitable player revolt and they'll have another rotten season. If he doesn't then the egos will walk all over him and he'll have a bad season. Either way, he's a dead man walking. Personally, I would offer Farrah an admin job where he has interaction with the players but is not the Captain. This will remove his over-influence where it is not appropriate, i.e. in front of a TV camera.

“However, we ask that you trust that we have made this decision in the interests of a stronger, unified club, following a rigorous and fair process.” Fair process? Got to be kidding! If by that, Grant Mayer means having an internal investigation, conducted by an unemployed NRL coach with its findings leaked all over the press, then geez, I'd hate to think what he'd deem an unfair process. Honestly, just what did the string-pullers actually expect this year from the side? Potter over-achieved, his team were an early favourite for the spoon! They were rebuilding nicely, pulled off some great victories against high-flyers Souths, Manly, North Qld and Canterbury and were in the mix for the finals with six weeks remaining until the dysfunctional board got involved and completely derailed the team. I cannot recall a coach having to put up with so much off-field nonsense in recent memory. Mick Potter, to his credit, always addressed himself under the intense media scrutiny as a total professional and at least walks away with his dignity intact. I hope he gets another crack at first grade somewhere else as he deserves better than this.

A fresh approach, they must be kidding, Potter has already initiated the long needed transition. My club has become a laughingstock, go the Panthers!

Thanks NQ, I realise sentiment and generosity of spirit has no place in running a modern footy side but how the tigers have treated Potter is beyond the pale, they bought him cheap to extract themselves from a hole and then dumped him like a rag doll. Pathetic.

Welcome aboard Baz. I've never liked the Tigers but I must say I really liked what Potter had done with this team and where he was taking them. I still hate Woods and Farrah but have really enjoyed watching Tedesco, Brooks, Moses and Sironen. These kids are the future. Not Robbie Farrah. Who would want to coach him?

Been a tiger fan/supporter since 1960 and sometimes it has been very hard work, but I'm done now. Go the cows!

Agree with that. Taylor is a great coach. as long as he is kept away from the turps at functions you are set.

What loony would seriously want to coach this basket case. Off the field the joint venture is broken financially with neither club able to contribute seriously. On the field: 2 good years (2004 and 2010), 1 good year with a quick finals exit, 12 of mediocrity. The only working joint venture club is the dragons, because both parties had something the other wanted and both parties are well represented.

If the Tigers know anything about anything, they will go for Jason Taylor. Its no secret he is the brains trust at the roosters, thats a fact.

The stupid thing about the board is you don't sack a coach unless you have someone lined up for the job. Didn't Brian Smith write a report for the board on the club's coaching? Will he be the next coach? Watch this space, same bat time, same bat channel.

It doesn't really matter who they bring in as the next coach, as in 6 months time Robbie Farrah will be working hard behind the scenes to destabilise him and get another coach sacked. The first order of business for the next Tiger's coach should be to make Robbie play the next 12 months in NSW cup and show him who is actually in charge of the Tiger's team.

Thanks Brumby but I think Farrah is to smart to be captain coach, he's the sort to play puppet master with some one else's career, and as for Mayer his name in my house is as good as a mark chapmans is in John Lennon pad! Really dissatisfied with the whole process and the simple fact is if he had no input into recruitment and retention then who were the brains trust that let korobettie go along with taquile naquvira ( sorry for spelling guys)? Was it Mayer? Was he at bulldogs when they had salary caps scandal ? Was he CEO of manly when the players were contracted heavily on the back end creating their current state?was he CEO of tigers when all hell broke loose and was no where to be found? Wake up new board the bloke who has caused most of our dramas is not fit pick up the glasses at Ashfield let alone lead a football club

What a disgrace. Under Potter this year the team went really well until the destabilisation started and the injuries set in. Who are these new Board members? What is their experience of RL? A strong experienced coach is needed who will put Farah in his place. If there was any fairness in the world both Mayer and Farah should be shown the door along with Potter. The prima donnaism and power grabbing has to end. Unfortunately, the prospects of this happening seem nil since these new Board members don't seem to have any idea how a club works.

Western Fuglie you're spot on in all your comments. How does Meyer get let off so easily? He was ultimately responsible for having this ugly mess played out in the press in the first place. As for Farah?! Wow. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put his hand up as Captain Coach now! His ego is big enough to handle it!

Agree with all comments. A Good Man let down and gone. The team's awful losses in the past few weeks probably made the position untenable, but what of the CEO and the (old) Board and their culpability? They created the environment. And it was the players who dropped so much ball and stopped tackling. It will need a tough man and an experienced coach to handle this sorry lot. Matt Parrish or Jason Taylor? Maybe Anthony Griffin would be a good choice. But please not Bryan Smith or even Nathan Brown.

When balmain merged with another near bankrupt it summed up how amaterish rugby league was in those days . But after 15 years has anything changed. Don't think so ! It's quite obvious why they settled out of court withTim Sheens and now with all the hurdles placed in front of Mick Potter and behind him he goes too. I'm only just hanging to my Balmain loyalty
