Are the fans the real problem with the NRL?

By Jacks / Roar Guru

This weekend’s NRL games have been outstanding contests, both decided by just one point and producing attacking and tense footy.

But still the fans complain. We complain about the refs, about the crowds, about the commentators and about certain players.

The Roosters versus Cowboys match was incredible. As a Roosters fan it was my least favourite game of the year besides the Sharks match where we lost after being up 24-0.

CATCH UP ON THE LATEST NRL HIGHLIGHTS

But the complaints of a conspiracy have taken away from one of the best games of the year, and for no real reason either.

The Sonny Bill Williams ‘knock-on’ late in the game, which resulted in a James Maloney field goal, was lost cold on my first viewing.

But upon a second viewing, Kane Linnett clearly had his hand on the ball. The fans inventing these cries of conspiracy against the Cowboys are really taking away the excitement from the game.

The biggest disappointment of this weekend though, were the crowds.

I’m a Roosters member but living in Lismore means I am unable to attend Sydney games. Therefore I’m not in a position to judge why people won’t turn up, but the people from Sydney are running out of excuses.

The fans of rugby league complain more than any other fan-base in the world, and this weekend has made this fact all the more obvious.

Instead of complaining about every single decision in every single game, perhaps we should enjoy this fantastic time of year.

The Crowd Says:

AR I'm a Torres Strait descendant and I find your comment "bottom of the barrel" a bit of a back-hander considering we supply the NRL a conveyer belt of players as well as 2 NBA rings and defensive linesmen in American football, not punters (AFL).

Martyn50 I wanted to play for my nation Australia and Queensland growing up, it's not a national code it's a international code. I'm a very proud kanaka and my hero's still are Mal Maninga, Gordan Tallis, Will Chambers, Sam Backo and Joey Kilroy not to mention Big Jesse Williams (American football). It's just too easy to pick an Aussie team from 2 states let alone 6.

Jay C I'm from Ipswich Qld and have mates who have witnessed a player getting his cheek down to his cheek-bone get bitten off, not a good look. Is that what's good for your son???.

Ret , if there were at least 35000 to 40000 of you at the game I'd believe you. Rugby League was invented in England in 1895 by the middle (commercial) class. It's the world 1st pro sport with employees PAID BY GATE-TAKINGS!.

Well its high time that the NRL believed in itself for once and pushed for more games shown live and the big money too, or tale it some where else!

Hahaha well there's 2 points I want to make here: 1) as far as being a fraud is concerned I've been a member of my club ever since I moved to Sydney, I'm on the hill whenever we're at home and I've travelled interstate on the few occasions that funds have allowed just to watch the boys play. I also love my local team, I'm at Henson Park whenever they're at home, and yadda yadda yadda I could go on. 2) none of the stuff I said in Point 1 matters a single little bit, this is an open forum and it doesn't matter what code I predominately follow so long as my points are relevant to the article. I'm sure if you just want to have a love-in for the code there's a 'League Loverz' facebook page or something like it out there but this isn't that place. It's an open forum and people can be as critical as they like and you're probably just gonna have to put up with it or not read it old bean!

...and yet *you* not only visit the site, but reference it to prove your arguments. Quite revealing really.
