Footballer charged with reacting to Russian fans' racism

By News / Wire

Congolese defender Christopher Samba faces a possible ban for his response to racist abuse in the Russian Premier League.

The former Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn player was subjected to racist abuse by fans of Torpedo Moscow while playing for Dynamo Moscow last Sunday.

Samba was substituted at halftime in apparent distress at the abuse but faces a Russian Football Union charge he displayed an “unpleasant gesture” to Torpedo fans. The RFU did not elaborate.

Ivorian defender Dacosta Goore was banned for two games in Russia for a similar offence last year after showing his middle finger to fans following racist abuse.

RFU disciplinary committee chairman Artur Grigoryants told the R-Sport agency that the case will be heard on Saturday.

Torpedo was punished for the racist abuse on Thursday when the RFU ordered the closure of one stand for its next game.

Samba was also the target of racial abuse in 2013 when a banana was thrown in his direction when he was playing for former club, Anzhi Makhachkala.

Last year, Europe’s ruling body UEFA ordered the partial closure of champions CSKA Moscow’s home venue following racist chants aimed at Manchester City’s Yaya Toure during a Champions League encounter.

I've always maintained racism on football terraces is not a football issue. It's an issue with certain elements of society - in Russia, Australia .. every country on earth has racists & bigots. As Aussies, let's not get sanctimonious. Racism is becoming far uglier in Aussie society in recent years and this article by journalist Erin Riley exposes the myth that Aussie sport is free from racist elements in the crowd. When he signed for Anzhi Makhachkala, who were a mid-table team in the Russian Premier League, Samuel Eto'o was being paid €20 million euros/year ... NET (i.e. after tax). So, in 1 year Eto'o earned more than the average Aussie would earn in a lifetime. Sounds like a reasonable reason to put up with abuse from the sidelines.

It is a pity that such a cultured Nation as Russia seems to be producing racist bullies. The fish does rot from the head it seems.
