Reports LFL Australia has been canned after just one season

By The Roar / Editor

Reports today indicate that the Women’s Gridiron competition LFL Australia (Legends Football League) will not have a 2014/15 season, with the lack of a broadcast partner playing a part in the decision.

The Seven Network was the broadcast partner for the 2013/14 edition of the competition, but they pulled out as host broadcaster in June this year.

The competition had four teams in its inaugural year, with the New South Wales Surge, Queensland Brigade, Victoria Maidens and Western Australia Angels all taking part.

There was plenty of criticism of the decision to broadcast the league initially, with an online petition for Seven to stop broadcasting the games generating over 2000 signatures.

Even Roarers got in on the act, with Ned Balme penning an article last year about the various virtues, or lack thereof, of the competition.

The attire of the player has long been a sore point for the Australian public, and there was backlash when the League first announced it was coming to Australia.

Formerly known as the ‘Lingerie Football League’, it rebranded in 2013 to the current name, and also changed the uniforms of the players.

Even still, its arrival in Australia attracted some negative attention.

There is reportedly still a broadcast deal in place for the 2015-16 season, but that will be placed in doubt if reports of the cancellation of this season turn out to be true.

We will keep you updated with the latest.

For the LFL fans on here I have news. This article isn't the whole story. After canceling the season amidst not having a network, as his rep put it, commisioner Mitch Mortaza put the record straight. As they had announced, the whole plan was to have LFLs Oceania (Australia, New Zealand), North America (United States, Canada, and possibly Mexico), Europa (France, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy), and Asia (no word on where teams would be), but after careful consideration, and insight from players from both Canada and Australia, he explained the league decided to hold off on any more seasons involving international teams until they were prepared. They shifted the focus to increasing and growing the US franchise. In the interim, the global franchises would get there teams, and then go through a bunch of training courses and get lessons in American football. This would include training for players, coaches, and referees. To keep the global connection going, international all fantasy games (such as the one in Guatemala last year) in potential cities as well as in cities getting teams (as a sneak peek), would be played using the US players. The statement noted that the exoected return of global franchises would be 2017, no later than early 2018. An article just came out a few days ago from a news station in Australia that confirms that teams have indeed been training. A future QB for the Adelaide Arsenal could be a part of a red carpet in the US prior to our championship game.

So what happens to the people who liked it and were looking forward to the LFL here in Australia, what are we becoming are we going back to the 1920s and no showing of skin for goodness sake we are Australians we were less to the beaches so stop people going to the beach and another thing so it is televised what have we forgotten for free speech and 1 thing else if you don`t like it change the channel but that is common sense. I happened to go to the LFL at the Brisbane entertainment centre to watch a game of L F L of the girls from the states and the crowd was huge and after the game you could go on to the field and have photos with the girls and get them to sign memorabilia but the lines were huge if you were one of the first 1000 you might have got a chance, the organizers were over whelmed by the am0ount of people who turned up to watch the game and it was enjoyable so I gather its stiff shit to the fans oh by the way my wife bought me my ticket as a birthday present so I gather the fans miss out again for a few people who criticised it to be shown on tv change the channel

Thanks Jon, I don't have any qualms with the idea that they don't play hard and put themselves in harms way each game. I good friend of mine actually was on the WA Raiders team and I went to many of their practices. If anything it actually doesn't bring any comfort knowing what they go through in practice for a cheapened finished product.

Hi Aussie Lady, as per comment to Ned above, I invite you to check out the pieces written on this very site by LFL player Anna Heasman, which flies in the face of your above point. You can find them by conducting a site-search for LFL. Keen to hear your subsequent thoughts thereafter.

Hey Ned, Nice article, well put. I would like to point out though that The Roar's had a few articles written by bona-fide LFL player Anna Heasman in the past (just do a site search for her, or for LFL for that matter, and they'll pop up) - which seem to suggest that LFL *is* actually a real sport, played by extremely competitive and hard-training professionals, and one which commands respect. Check them out, please, as I'd be very keen to hear your subsequent thoughts thereafter. Cheers mate,

Matthew imagine a lazy glutenous man locking himself inside an eye candy sweet shop and throwing away the key. Matthew can you please without a smirk please try to explain just how unsportsmanlike ,unladylike and serious an offense it is to fell an opponent and then remorselessly Twerk on their head on the sports field. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvV8lIivKNM Matthew i have yet to meet Mitch Mortaza the pre 9 11 Taliban Afghan refugee who fled to America as a child and then went on to create the Lingerie football league then re branded Legends Football league who put this very sorry sordid gloriously Politically Incorrect joyous enterprise together. . But i have meet Keith Hack the hard nosed coach of the Chicago Bliss and several of their very attractive ,very athletic female players who were happily signing autographs and posing for selfies with the fans in the concourse of the Sears indoor arena after their match in a place called Hoffman Estates about 20 miles outside Chicago. Wonderful experience Matthew ,don't think about it go and watch Legends Football in America or at the new break away league in Australia or catch up with it on Youtube.Brilliant entertainment you,re obviously primarily go there to leer at the players but then stay to cheer om their commitment and determination. Perfect antidote to a stifling po-faced miserable PC health and safety world of speed cameras ,smoking bans ,alcohol taxes ,carbon taxes, fat taxes and petty state moralizing.

The fact that Channel 7 actually purchased the rights for this rubbish shows you just how much respect they have for their viewers.

No more exploitation than any other person in any other job. It was crystal clear what the job entailed, and no-one forced them into doing it. Not that I was a follower of the league, but no-one should feel sympathy for the girls for any other reason than they just lost their jobs.

Well said LFL is described on the feminist Jazabel website as having the sex appeal of a pole dance and the athleticism of a bar room brawl.Fantastic that is exactly why the fans ,the players and the coaches love it so much. Mitch Mortaza ,s original Idea was to strip the female player down to just their bare essentials and then get great views of their bodies unfortunately for Mitch it also gave everyone great views of their body language. All the raw emotion generated on the sports field, frustration, anger ,exhilaration all displayed in the commitment and determination by all the players. Also it meant that female athletes without excessive padding could run faster unhindered. Put 14 women in skimpy under ware with crash helmets and shoulder pads opposing each other with a ball on a half sized American football pitch and something to prove they stop being bimbo glamor models and become aspirational committed sports women. I stumbled onto the LFL accidentally on a late night comedy Youtube clips show in London .Like everyone i thought this is a joke though incredibly sexy and raunchy.I googled it obviously expecting to see fit nubile players losing their clothes along with their dignity and what i as with everyone else didn't expect was for a fantastic display of searing touch downs not just thumbling matches but convincingly winning them too.The players through their effort and commitment won over the fans and the promoters..Us blue collar beery redneck fans we all came to leer and in the end we all stayed to cheer. Whether a red blooded leering perv or a 4 wave feminist did anyone expect those player in skimpy joke outfits to want to play their games seriously through skill and commitment try to win their games. Those female players through sport took an initial sexist concept and through their own efforts made it their own.LFL is not a triumph of feminism over sexism or individualism over political correctness its a triumph of the players own humanity. In a previous post i mention the right to freedom of expression and desilva hints for more freedom to erotic feminine expression . What i want is in a world of political elites and political (un)correctness, twitter trolls and cyber bullying and censorious non offensive spiritless culture and in other sports see the current turmoils in the proper NFL and in the arts and oppressive CCTV and health and safety ,non risk ,smoking bans ,fat and carbon taxes where im living in a Charlies Angels loving Aryn Rand dystopian nightmare is my weekly LFL youtube fix my Oasis in a European Union Federal superstate oppressive spiritless PC desert. Perhaps what the LFL does is this magnificent gloriously crude ,fierce novelty gaudy brutal raucous, enthralling joyous spirited heartened silliness does is give us back some freedom of emotional expression. That is why me and Australia needs the LFL..

I dont think commercial broadcasters want a bar of it they need an image . I watched 5 min's of this stupidity on astro turf beamed from America and it was 5 min's to long the more concerning element to the sport for mine was the 35-55 yr old males in the stands and there wasn't many there either perving whilst drinking beer from plastic cups. Women need respect in sport not this Tac . I still can't get over their male counterparts calling themselves World Champions either, turn it up . America is a bizarre country for sport/s ...

No one is being objectified nor exploited Recognising the sexual elements of a human being isn't denying everything else in their humanity. Sexuality is a part of people humanity (and in fact is a core part of it) "Women cannot “express” when they are being pressured into wearing uniforms for the look and not for function." No one is pressured. A job was available, a person send in their resume, went to interviews and find the renumeration acceptable for the uniform available. If something like this is pressure and coercian, than making a good persuasive argument to convince someone to do something is "pressure" The reality is that women can get benefit and advantage for their function AND looks. A women can compete in an open market against male competitors and win respect if they manage to outcompete other women and men in any field. In terms of sports no one would disrespect female competitors competing against other men and succeed. The fact that women get benefit for being attractive is simply an advantage they have over unattractive women and men in general. Women's sexuality has market value, male sexuality don't (or at least it's market value is far less) and using the market value to their advantage is not exploitative at all (at least to those women). It's funny that majority time when you ask those women whether they feel they are being exploited they usually say no but I guess women don't have the right to consider decide for themselves whether they are exploited or not. Let's have a group of women that have nothing to do with them decide on their behalf that they are exploited. "wearing skimpy uniforms for the pleasure of male patrons is exploitation and no different to how women in the sex industry are selected for their jobs. " It's not the women who are getting exploited where sexuality isn't an exchange of sexual pleasure for sexual pleasure, but sexual pleasure for sexual pleasure + cash. It's society statement that female sexuality > male sexuality. I have no interest in the LFT but I find the opposition to it a demonisation of male sexuaality,

"Human rights" include the right not to be exploited and/or objectified. It is just a different form of repression. Women cannot "express" when they are being pressured into wearing uniforms for the look and not for function. The players were selected on looks and not skill. Having the best looking and not the most skilled women wearing skimpy uniforms for the pleasure of male patrons is exploitation and no different to how women in the sex industry are selected for their jobs.

They aren't even giving back sponsorship money to the businesses that have sponsored the event for this year. They are saying that they are going to roll it into next season and sponsors are getting a "free" year of sponsorship.
