Ryder will stay unless trade is OK: Hird

By Rob Forsaith / Wire

Essendon continue to talk tough over Paddy Ryder with coach James Hird saying the ruckman will remain at the AFL club unless a deal can be brokered.

Ryder did not attend the Bombers’ best-and-fairest function having previously told the club he wants to be traded to Port Adelaide.

The 26-year-old is in the prime of his career and wants a fresh start after Essendon’s drawn-out supplements scandal.

Ryder has two years remaining on his contract.

But a new clause could allow him to walk as a free agent – if he can show Essendon failed in their duty of care.

If that threat, and the accompanied fresh scrutiny scares Essendon, they certainly aren’t showing it.

At the start of trade period, Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro suggested the onus was on Port to up their current offer.

Dodoro quipped the Bombers were only interested in trading “apples for apples, not apples for a bag of peanuts”.

Hird, speaking on the club website, was not asked about the get-out clause in Ryder’s contract.

But he insisted the Bombers would be happy to keep the wantaway on their books.

“If a player wants to leave, we will look at that opportunity for them to leave,” Hird said on Tuesday, one day after the board met and agreed to retain the Essendon icon.

“But it would have to be a good deal for us, otherwise Paddy will stay an Essendon player.

“We are keen for him to stay.

“If an opportunity comes up at another club that is good for our club, we will look at it.

“Otherwise, he is a required player.”

Hird was last week at loggerheads with Essendon officials when he decided to appeal the Federal Court’s recent ruling in favour of ASADA.

The topic was not broached during Tuesday’s interview, but Hird left nobody in doubt he was planning for the long term.

“In the next couple of weeks we’ll have an announcement,” Hird said of the club’s search for senior assistant coach Simon Goodwin’s successor.

Goodwin has left the club to be Paul Roos’s protege at Melbourne.

Hird described Jason Winderlich and Ben Howlett as “very important players” to the Bombers.

Winderlich retired but is keen to join Richmond, while Howlett is considering his future given the uncertainty over who will coach the Bombers in 2015.

“(Howlett’s) very comfortable if Hirdy’s going to continue coaching, there would be a commitment towards Essendon,” Howlett’s manager Jason Dover said.

Trade period ends next Thursday and there is yet to be a deal completed.

TUESDAY’S TRADE DEVELOPMENTS:
* North Melbourne confirm midfielder Levi Greenwood is seeking a trade to Collingwood
* GWS young gun Jono O’Rourke seeking a trade to Hawthorn
* Carlton forward Jeff Garlett requests a trade to Melbourne

Port have not preyed upon anybody, Paddy said he wanted out before he ever spoke to Port. Port just showed him a more desirable destination than Brisbane, but I think the real issue is for EFC is that they've never had a "wanted" top ten player say they want out and it's such a foreign feeling to them they don't know what to feel so they've gone to the default position of outrage. Yes he is in contract and Port will move on to the next one if we can't get him but like a lot of Essendon fans your rating of him seems to be based upon the thought that if Port get him they take the next step even though you are forgetting Port's age of the team and the fact that we are on an upward trajectory that hasn't reached it's conclusion, do we want him? sure, is it guaranteed we will win a premiership with him? well ask Sydney fans if they thought the inclusion of Buddy had secured the cup by rd 14.

Danny, I have never said Essendon should accept Port's late first round draft pick. Note my contributions to "Griffen's trade request rocks Bulldogs" in todays Roar: Aransan said | October 10th 2014 @ 12:28pm | Report comment The thinking of senior players like Griffen are a good part of the Bulldogs problem, get rid of him for the best trade you can get and lay down the law to the club’s other so called leaders. When a player breaks a contract they should have no say in which club they go to, they should just be told where they are going and if they are not happy with that then they should be banned from the competition. Clubs that entice players to break contracts should also be penalised and there has been an increasing tendency for clubs to do this. Ryder’s case is different, but Essendon should receive reasonable compensation which is not on offer from Port Adelaide at present. The baiting that Essendon players, their families and supporters have been receiving from some other Victorian based so called supporters over the last two years has been quite awful and I can understand Ryder and his family’s desire to leave Victoria. If Port can’t offer compensation better than draft pick 17 then they don’t value him as much as most other clubs do and he should consider other non-Victorian clubs. Reply Franko said | October 10th 2014 @ 12:42pm | Report comment What can Port do..? Nobody wants to go to Essendon, the best they can offer is their best pick. They’re even struggling to get any fringe players to go to other clubs in order to get a pick to give to Essendon. Reply Aransan said | October 10th 2014 @ 12:46pm | Report comment Well Port aren’t in the market are they? Ryder should be looking for a club that can do a reasonable deal.

Aransan... I will try to be as quick and to the point as I can. Your posts are quite insightful when they are not overwhelmingly tarred by your tiring political correctness. You are trying to play the 'on the fence' Essendon supporter and it does EFC no justice and boars people to absolute tears! Essendon should not aid to facilitate Paddy's move to Port full stop. I say stuff Port, they have preyed on the weak, vulnerable and need I say contracted! If they want him, give something up it's that simple. It's an absolute joke they have courted a fit, in form, rare & superior athletic KPP in his prime which could well be that missing link between being a semi finalist to grand finalist or even premiers next year. They were 1 kick away from playing in the granny for goodness sake and if there is one player their list needs, it is a genuine ruck/forward. Even their list manager Cripps and Ryder's manager Conners have conceded themselves that pick17 is hardly enough. Do your homework and look at all draft picks of the last 10 years between picks 15 - 19. (Pick 17 will most likely slip to 19 btw) 80-90% are no where near Paddy's calibre, half are duds and many aren't even heard of. Pies won't accept 2 low 1st round picks for Beams (who wants to go to Brisbane to be close to his ill father) who whilst is a great player is a dime a dozen type and history suggests these types are usually taken in the 2nd round of the draft. So, Essendon take Paddy at pick 7, honoured him 2 years ago with a generous 4 year contract, assisted couple of his family to move to Melb, invested 8 years developing him into one of the top ruck men and definately THE best ruck/fwd in the comp at the moment who has come off one of his best seasons (in the most stressful time of his life I might add), arguably has his best 5 years of (stress free) footy ahead of him and chosen to go to a club who are a genuine contender and need a player like Paddy but don't want to give up anything? They can keep their pretentious LATE first round pick. If he is adament on leaving, EFC should send him where we get the best trade for him that best suits us, not him otherwise he can keep the bench warm in the VFL and send a message to the rest of the comp. EFC hold the aces - he is a contracted player. If we give in that sets a precedent for any others who will simply sign contracts knowing they mean nothing then leave when their ready. BTW the 'get out clause' is nothing but media noise, it will not stand up in court. Firstly, it wouldn't apply to his current contract as he signed it after the supplement regime and did not bring up any concerns at the time (similar to Hird's case that was dismissed by Just. Middleton), Asada's unsubstantiated "medical" comments & bully tactics will be revealed and also Paddy conceded today he would've stayed if the saga "didn't drag out for more than 6 months". So is Adada's incompetence Essendon's fault or a breach of their duty of care? Everybody else in this thread (more specifically Carlton supporters as much as they love this drama) seriously has to form their own opinions and look beyond the laughable media narrative that we are suffocated by.

COnversely would Beams be a free agent if his contract was terminated? The pies would then get pick 10 in compo and pick 5 from Brisbane, Brisbane give 25 to Geelong (who could possibly get pick 36 as well) and everyone would be happy, except the other clubs who keep getting shuffled backwards to accomodate other clubs deals.

I think this is a slippery slope that the AFL is allowing, I thnkk in future there could be quite a few contracts mutually terminated, clubs then taking the Free agnecy compo and being topped up by another club depending on how the compo works out. For example lets assume Christensen is contrated by Geelong but would be eligible for free agency if that contract wasn't in place, ribane are using 5 and 25 for Beams so are a bit snookered when trying to get Christensen as their next available pick is 44. But Geelong tear up the contract, get a second round pick as compo which would be pick 36 and then Brisbane top up the deal with draft picks or players or both.

Hird is delusional. As a Blues supporter, I really, really hope Hirdy and the rest of the clown academy keep this going, better than watching re-runs of Benny Hill.

Not quite Rad: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-10-08/unusual-plan-for-paddy I am not Essendon but I would take picks 17 and 21 for Ryder but it is only the free agency compensation #21 that might be available from the AFL. Perhaps Port could agree to swap #17 for an Essendon player at the bottom of their list to facilitate the Ryder move. Actually this is something that the AFL could be proactive on, I would hate to be the Essendon list manager at the moment with all the uncertainties -- it must be very difficult for Essendon to trade. I am not aware of many Essendon players wishing to leave apart from Ryder. Jetta and Hardingham were probably going to go anyway, Howlett wants Hird to stay but I am disappointed that Winderlich wants to go to Richmond. He was a very keen Essendon supporter who was lucky enough to finish up at the club he barracked for, but enough is enough and I can understand that.

Macca I am not up to speed on how Port could possibly trade a top 10 draft pick, if indeed this is what is required to make the trade. But if it is then I would be doing quite a bit to acquire Ryder because of the reasons I stated. You just said yourself he has the potential to hit his straps and that's the key to any good trade. Not that Essendon are in a good position, but trade is all about giving something up that's got value in exchange for something else you feel has more value. Now I wouldn't be trading the Chad, after all he is...THE CHAD! Saying that he may turn to turd and be nothing in the next few years and more importantly he is easier to replace than a key position player such as Ryder. The only reason I wouldn't trade the Chad is because he also has huge marketing value, something the Power needs to continue riding this huge wave of success both on and off the field to potentially knock the Crows off their perch as the top dog in Adelaide for the past 25 years. Dal I agree - he is not absolutely essential and I would probably 100 per cent agree with you had Port followed a natural path of progression most people expected a club like this to take. However, the Power have not shown a normal path of success and this year we saw them come within one kick of the back-2-back champions. Now when you say he is a luxury, I totally agree and it's depth and key position players like this that win you premierships. Look at Hale, an offensive mobile Ruckman that is a no frills player. Ryder is near identical to this and could be a huge weapon for the Power. It's also why Freo are so lethal because they have the best rucking division by a long shot, something the Power are not renown for at present. They are now in a serious premiership window and do not require at this time first round draft picks. They have the 3rd youngest starting 22, which means they can easily sacrifice youth to bolster the rucking division. Perhaps they trade pick 17 with a sweetener. Who that sweetener is I don't know, but I would be VERY surprised if Ryder is not at the Power next year Franko Wines - I'd give up two Chads before I gave up Wines. NFW will Port even entertain this idea for ANYONE! He is 20 years old, 94 kg and 187 kg - the prototype of the next generation of midfielders. I think you will find both him and Fyfe will be the Judd and Ablett of this generation of midfielders The boy is a future Brownlow medalist and you can quote me on that in about 5 years time. He may even be the next Port captain - that's how good I think this kid can be.

Breaking news just on the radio is the AFL will tear up Ryder's contract (with Essendon's permission) and consider him a free agent so he can go to Port, Port will give up #17 and the AFL will give Essendon free agent pick #21 (first pick after Essendon's first pick) and if Essendon don't agree then it will go to grievance. I'm hearing the evidence (witnesses) that ASADA has is so damning the AFL will help any player who wants to leave (and there are a few of them) any way they can.

Benny - his original reason for leaving was that he wanted to live in a city outside of the AFL bubble (Brisbane). When Port came knocking, his reason is now duty of care. Very poor form.

IMO Essendons best bet would be to trade out anyone who wants out and load up on draft picks. Get 5-6 top 30 picks and build a side for the post scandal era.

Rooch just said on radio that Essendon might just take the 17 and then use it on another player because they need to move quickly because some players want out.

Although to be fair, Ryder has forged a career in one of the more difficult positions, Wines and Wingard have shown to be excellent players, but you could bank on some down periods as their careers progress too. They've been great at storming the barricades, but haven't yet proven they can hold them for an extended period. Still I wouldn't think Port would even consider putting either of those two on the table.

Fair enough Rick, but Wingard is a what 22 year old All-Australian, Ryder has never been AA, so them aint apples. Wines got 5 Brownlow votes this year, Ryder got 2, and Wines is 6 years younger, again it aint apples. Pick 17 seems fair, especially since Essendon don't have a first round pick due to their drug saga.

True he does fit into a relatively rare category. But Port already has a handy mobile ruckman in Lobbe, so adding Ryder is aimed at strengthening their ruck stocks and giving them flexibility with Trengove and Westhoff. So Ryder isn't a crucial for Port, he's a very very nice bonus, particularly if they get Gorringe to add depth to their ruck stocks. You'd also have to think that they'll improve again next year without having to make any changes to their personnel at all. Given all that he's probably not worth to Port what they'd have to do to get that single digit pick.

Rick Pick 17 is hardly chicken feed (it is what 3 or 4 places higher than the bombers first pick currently) and no one is going to part with a single digit pick unless the player they are getting is an A grader (which Ryder isn't). Yes he potentially could be about to hit the best part of his career but he also could do exactly what he has done so far.

Which part is "knocking Essendon"? Like a majority on this site, I think Essendon have erred quite gravely and note that they're paying a high price. Players abandoning ship - 3 are on the move - either because of genuine concerns or opportunistically using the club's tenuous legal position to their advantage is not "knocking Essendon". It's stating the facts. Play the ball and not the man Aransan, you get way too personal on this site. There's a lot of gratuitous Essendon knocking here, I'm not one of them.

When did he sign his new contract? If it's got two years to run - surely that means he signed it after the whole scandal blew up? Surely he can't in good conscience (or in a grievance tribunal) that he was really that worried about the whole program if he signed a new contract during the ASADA investigation? It would seem to me he will struggle to exercise any "duty of care" out clause.

Penster, here you go again with your Essendon knocking. Ryder's public declarations are not at all unreasonable, he has no desire to punish Essendon and he understands that what Port Adelaide are offering is well short of the mark. Essendon don't want to lose Ryder but if he is so strong in his desire to go they are willing to accommodate him so long as a fair exchange can be made. Ryder was and is still much loved at the club.
