Cheika sends the Wallabies a warning with Beale call

By David Lord / Expert

New Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has sent a powerfui message to his troops – Kurtley Beale won’t be invited to join his teammates on the spring tour.

Once Beale was fined $45,000 on Friday night by the Code of Conduct tribunal for sending a lewd text to Di Patston, the Wallabies business manager, it was readily accepted that was that.

Beale would resume his international career immediately on the first plane out for Heathrow.

“No,” said Cheika.

That small word sent a mighty big message to the Wallabies, a ‘don’t mess with me’ message.

Under the watch of former Wallabies coaches Robbie Deans and Ewen McKenzie, far too many disciplines were broken, or ignored, damaging team culture. At the first hurdle on his watch, Cheika’s foot has come down hard on one of his very best players, and one he stood up for by letter at his tribunal hearing.

By any standards that was a huge call by Cheika, telling Beale he wasn’t wanted on tour and to start training for the Waratahs’ defence of their Super Rugby title. Cheika added if there were injuries on this tour, Beale could be called on, but not to count on it.

Now watch the Wallabies improve out of sight, the disipline bar has been raised and Cheika won’t take any prisoners. If you’d asked me a month ago how the Wallabies will go on this tour, and eventually the Rugby World Cup, I would have suggested a prayer or two, then hope with fingers crossed.

Carpeting Beale has changed all that, and I am very much a Beale supporter as a world-class footballer, despite his brain explosion moments.

I will predict two things right now.

First up, the Wallabies will be ready to win a record third Rugby World Cup when their campaign kicks off against Fiji at the Millennium Stadium on September 23 next year. And secondly, Kurtley Beale will be a better man, and a better player, now Cheika has taken this surprise stand.

So let’s remember the starting point for success was October 25, 2014, the day when Michael Cheika knocked back sending for Kurtley Beale to teach him a lesson he will never forget.

And nor will the 33 Wallabies on tour forget either.

Mike, you still don't get it. Beale sent the second, more offensive text to Patston. He then told Patston that he had not sent the image to anyone else, and he had. He told her that to escape punishment. He has admitted all of this. This is not conjecture, or extrapolation, IT IS IN KURTLEY'S STATEMENT. Patston, on the other hand, has made allegations, none of which have yet proven false. She has stated that her phone was returned to the ARU in August as part of a routine upgrade. Samsung are sponsors and the players and staff routinely get new equipment. She has made her new phone available.

Or rather, "you take sides against me (as I perceive it) and I will attack you". Patston is now making unsubstantiated allegations against those who questioned her unsubstantiated allegation against Beale. And once again, she is doing it in such a way that she cannot be asked any questions about it.

RK, how have the media "excoriated" her? They have asked questions concerning her CV and the sending of the second more offensive text. She invited these by her own actions, which are still largely unexplained. "Give it up Mike. Beale has admitted sending it twice. He has also admitted to telling PAtston straight up that he had not sent it twice. He is a filthy liar." Wow Handles, double standards much? Patston made a much more serious allegation against Beale, but then declined to corroborate it by providing her phone to be checked, and declined to attend the hearing. Then, she gave a very lengthy interview to the Australian which entirely avoided that issue, but made numerous other allegations about people she didn't like. Yet again, none of this can be checked or verified. She is giving the impression that she likes to make very serious allegations about others, but ONLY when the facts cannot be checked, and that she will not do anything to enable facts to be checked.

"I am not sure how this series of events paints Patson in a bad light" Who said it did? Perhaps you may want to read my post before responding to it next time. A serious allegation was made by Patston, which was demonstrably false in one particular, and which cannot be proved in any respect because she refused to allow it to be checked or investigated. It seems some people would rather that wasn't talked about.

Perhaps the final judgement on DLord's article here is given by referring to the following: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/rugby-union/kurtley-beale-may-play-against-barbarians/story-e6frg7o6-1227104182265 Seems the strong message that DLord goes on about didn't get through to Cheika's defence coach and the incumbent half-back. So there was no message. Perhaps worse is the mixed messages this gives the fans. We're told Kurtley won't be required unless there are injuries. Now we have the story that, subject to finalization of all investigations, KB will be considered for selection for the EOYT matches. I hope the new coach is at least giving a straight story to Toomua, Leali'ifano and Godwin about their position in his scheme for the Wallabies.

Patson has no right to pursue the " extra " claims through the press or elsewhere - she gave up that right when she both refused to appear and refused to submit her phone . She has previously made the claims , has not withdrawn them admitting a mistake , so unless she is really daft we must assume she has a real basis for sticking to her position. Why not show the proof the phone) ?. It is clear she doesn't want anyone to see content of phone. We can postulate that there is other content on that phone which she wishes to stay private. If it is wallaby related it can only be Link or about him . I posted ages ago that it was not believable that EK left on the basis he claimed - losing the players. I still believe he fell on his sword to protect someone who he felt was badly wronged from further damage - shut down all the innuendo. However the phones are the open sores along with anyTestimony. They both have avoided both . The protection of all other material has cost Patson by withholding the ultimate proof from tribunal . I think we can safely say it is not just daily banter she is protecting - but it is her right to do so unless other facts establish she has herself something to answer . It's unlikely to be over now that claims are still being made without supporting facts.

There is only one experienced fullback in this squad. So if Issy gets injured or needs a rest who should replace him? Quade? Henry?

If only it was that easy to win a World Cup. Just drop a problematic player and voila, done.

@ biltongbek : LOL Cheika must be wondering how the media is not in Dubai with the cricket team from the way they put a spin to whatever he said. This was in Planet Rugby a couple of days ago :) "" “Beale has been under a lot of pressure and stress,” Cheika told reporters upon arrival at Heathrow Airport. “It’s a matter of him taking a step back and letting everything settle down at the moment, train and see how he feels. “We’ve got depth in our back line, it’s not like a desperation move. I’m not even thinking about [bringing him in]. I was preparing for the fact he wasn’t going to be on the tour. “I’ll speak to him, tell him to start training … get back to business as normal. I think a bit of normality is what everyone requires. “The tribunal made its decision; Beale has the chance to play again, which is good. But he’s paid a heavy fine and heavy price, he’s missed a few [Tests] already. “No one is really happy about anything. It’s dealt with and we’ll get on with playing footy. “I’ve come in pretty late. I’ve spoken to all the players here and I’m confident in the guys we’ve got; it’s not like there’s any desperation or anything like that.” "''
