UPDATE: Shane Watson hit on the helmet at Aussie training

By News / Wire

Shane Watson sent a scare through the Australian camp when he was hit in the helmet in the MCG nets while preparing for the Boxing Day Test.

UPDATE: Watson has returned to training with Australia on 24 December.

Allrounder Watson was struck by a short-pitched delivery from paceman James Pattinson on Tuesday morning and left the nets to receive treatment.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said Watson was shaken otherwise okay.

In a lively session paceman Mitchell Starc also required treatment after being hit on the knee while batting.

Opener David Warner was a notable absentee from the session with his injured thumb but he is still expected to play when the third Test against India gets underway on Friday.

That's right...and with Smithy averaging over 70, we can keep my Shauny in and he can keep getting beautifully compiled 32s. Christmas is a feel good time.

As always you make some good points mate. The thing that always gets talked about with Faulkner is that he is a great competitor, which no doubt he is. But it doesn't matter how much you can compete in cricket, it only takes one ball to get you out. Dunno where I'm going with this to be honest because I just got home and I'm pissed. Great competitor the lad is but he has to be in the the top 6 batsmen in the country or the top 3 quicks in the country, and in my opinion he is not in the top 20 bats in the country and is not even in the top 10 bowlers in the country, even though his first class bowling average suggests otherwise

Mark and Steve Waugh were good examples.

Classic! But I agree the modern team seems to require it. Makes you appreciate a guy like Mark Waugh who was a batsman that was more than handy with the ball...

Bush Yeah your right. To not have a better record compared to Watson, suggests to me that he really did blew it.

Nudge 12 months ago I thought we had to find a way to get Faulkner in. The guy's a competitor and a cricketer and always seems to contribute. If you could find a way to fit him in as your 4th seamer and 5th bowler then your attack is awfully strong. If your keeper is a mid-40s test bat and your 8 and 9 can bat like say a Johnson, starc, Pattinson or Cummins, then you might be able to find a way to squeeze him in. You only get 4 bowlers and 6 bats, so there are more spots to squeeze in a batting all rounder than a bowling one. However he does seem to have gone off the boil a bit.

With Haddins current batting form you need Sir Don in the line up to make up his shortfall.

James hopes is not a test number 6 unfortunately JGK. And that's what you need at the moment with Haddins batting form

That's unrealistic and also not necessary. Taylor, M Waugh, Slater and Boon all averaged less than 45 (but more than 40) and they were part of the worlds best team. If Smith and Warner become close to 50 average then the other 4 only need to average 40.

Jameswm, you have a great cricket brain, but seriously mate Faulkner? Hasn't ever scored a first class ton, and been ordinary with the bat this shield season. Bit over the Faulkner thing myself obviously. He will never play more than 10 tests for Australia

We still need an alrounder, or a batsman who can bowl, like a Greg Blewett. We need a fifth bowling option to keep the four main bowlers fresh, and to take the pressure off Lyon.

If Watson was to not play the next best option would be Henriques as a batting all rounder that can bowl handy overs

Batting #3 wanted

I hope he is ok but this would such a boon for Australia if we got a decent batsman at 3. We need all 6 batsmen to be averaging 45+ to be and stay #1 -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

The fact that training stopped immediately after Watson slumped in the nets, and that both he and Pattinson were in a state of shock initially tells you that it was a bit of a nasty one, given what's happened recently, yeah, this is pretty newsworthy. There's a different attitude to head injuries in cricket now, and I don't think that's a bad thing..

Injured all rounder you mean? I reckon they'd bring in Faulkner or Abbott. Faulkner changes the balance and Hadds might need to bat at 6, but he's a wonderful cricketer. How is Abbott's batting? Hmm, just checked and he seems more of a bowling all rounder to me.

2 months ago I wouldnt have clicked on this headline. Anyway he's ok. If a batsman injured last minute they would play Starc and Harris with Johnson batting 7 and Starc at 8.

Good to see Patto back and bowling quick. I wonder who would be cover for an injured batsman?
