[VIDEO] Australia vs India 4th Test highlights: Day 3 live scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Scores of more than fifty for each of Australia‘s top six batsmen led them to another 500-plus total and a quick run-rate ensured they have a lot of time to force a result against India in the final Test of the series. Follow the live scores of the third day from the SCG from 10:30am (AEDT).

India bowled better on the second day than they did on the first but by then they had conceded more than 400. Any improvement with the ball was only going to be cursory and not aid their cause in the ongoing game.

LIVE SCORES OF DAY FIVE BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND INDA

As it turned out, India got rid of both the overnight batsmen, Shane Watson and Steven Smith, in the first session and conceded very little. Smith had hammered his fourth ton in as many games, while Watson missed his first in more than a year.

Shaun Marsh and Joe Burns played themselves in to allow the Indian bowlers to take control of the run-rate but an aggressive approach immediately after the break ensured there would be no late-order hiccups. Both reached their half-centuries as Australia went on to crack 572 in their first innings, before a reasonably early declaration left India with 25 overs to negotiate.

In-form batsman Murali Vijay fell in the first over for a duck and was then given a send-off by Mitchell Starc, something that David Warner had earlier spoken against. More vitally, Starc looked to have found his rhythm as he cranked up his pace to more than 145 kilometres per hour, and even pegged new-comer KL Rahul on to the back foot.

Smith could have given Starc an extra over at Rahul but he opted to use the short-burst strategy to keep the left-armer fresh on what is a docile pitch.

Speaking of the pitch, while there wasn’t too much for the Indian bowlers over the 153 overs they bowled, Starc did extract some bounce, while Nathan Lyon achieved spin. It’s a dry pitch as well and while it’s yet to really crack open, there are chances that Lyon will come into his own over the next couple of days.

Rohit Sharma, who was sent up to the number three spot in place of Cheteshwar Pujara, had a fruitful time despite quite a few pokes and misses, ending unbeaten on 40. More interesting was his approach against Lyon, who he hit for a couple of sixes over the bowler’s head.

India will look to continue taking on Lyon when they get a chance and milk him if that forces Smith to push fielders back. Lyon’s job will be to keep finding that spot on the pitch from where puffs of dust are coming up and the ball’s turning quite a bit.

While it may not be spinning square yet, Lyon will remain a crucial element on the Aussie bowling make-up on the third day.

India need to bat long and hard and ensure they do not fall too far behind on the first innings. If they do, they will be left with a lot to do in the second innings – this does not look like a pitch where you can bat four sessions to survive.

You can follow the live score of the third day of this fourth Australia vs India Test from 10:30am local time, and post your comments in the section below.

Kohli has matched or exceeded the high expectations placed on him during this tour. He has single handedly made a very ordinary Indian team seem competitive. No doubt the man of the series. Steve Smith has also been fantastic, but considering the Indian bowling attack is poor, Kohlis efforts on balance are more meritorious.

So what happened to the ch9 coverage in North Queensland today? From lunch onwards there was absolutely no cricket on the nine network where I , and many others live. Shame nine, shame.

India should make another 80 or so minimum with some extra batting in the tail this time around. If India are still in at lunch this is a draw

We will have a better idea by lunch tomor. If Australia can bowl them out by lunch tomor, we will have a lead of 130 or more with 60 overs left in the day. If we bat for 50 overs and score at 5ish an over, we could set them 380 off 97 overs and have a little crack tomor night. I think Smith with the series in the bag will declare a little earlier if he gets a chance. Draw the favourite but I'm not counting out an Aussie win. We did take 6 wickets in Melbourne on a flat deck in just over 2 sessions on day 5.

So is this test a draw? Or do we have to wait another 48 hours for official confirmation.

Australia hasn't enforced a follow-on in years and to frank is unlikely to do so in the foreseeable future...

India are a good 230 runs away from the Aussie score. They have collapsed in this series before this, so Australia will know they have a chance tomorrow but if anything, this isn't quite a bowling pitch to go with the fact India's lower-order may just have been bolstered by the inclusion of Bhuvnewshwar Kumar. If they can bat up to lunch tomorrow, it will bring them closer to a draw. Australia are not yet out of it, they need to give themselves at least 90, if not 100 overs in the final innings to bowl India out but it will also depend on how much they want to set India. That's it from me, will be back for the fourth day tomorrow at the same time. Have a good evening till then.

India have batted slowly on a pitch that demanded that off him. The bowlers were excellent as far as their channels were concerned in the first session, went for a few in the second before picking up those three wickets in the final. The sixth wicket stand is already worth 50 and that is a fair indicator of how it's gone for the bowlers on this track. Still Virat Kohli has done well to get to 140, after KL Rahul batted with aplomb to score his maiden Test century. Both were dropped by Steven Smith, which reduces their chances in the game.

So that's that then, Smith brought himself on for the last over and was easily milked away for five from it. Ends the day's play at 5/342 in 115.

Another 36 runs by India and this test match is done for all competitive purposes... If India saves the follow on...

Nicely done, fullish from Harris and Kohli has given it a tap down the ground for three. Hazlewood gives good chance from mid-on. Saha defends the next one and wants to test him with a bumper next ball...Saha takes his bottom hand off and defends. The ball never arrived for Saha. Just those three runs from the over. 5/336 in 113. Two overs remaining.

Got to hand it to Kohli. He has matched Smith's excellent performance as captain. He has a great career ahead of him.

Just the single from Lyon's first ball that over which is followed five defensive dabs by Saha. Three more overs left to be bowled. 5/333 in 112.

And a maiden from Harris, which is easily negotiated by Saha. Interestingly, the run-rate has tipped over three an over for India. 5/332 in 110.

Six from the Lyon over. Was a touch shorter in that one. Saha was able to cut one away to one of them and then there were a couple of easy singles. 5/332 in 110.

This not meant as a reflection on you Suneer, but what a completely boring yawnfest. The "Chairman's Pitch" has stuffed this game - well along with moving with the dates. Actually, from what I have listened to, I am glad that I couldn't attend (due to the altered dates). Oh well at least the winter sports world cups are on, time to go watch some time-shifted interesting sport.

Watson's done with his spell, which has been an excellent one. Nathan Lyon replaces him for three overs from this end. Remember Saha had gotten out to Lyon the last time these two sides met.

Four dots in the Hazlewood over before Kohli gets one fuller and wider and he has thrown the bat at it, driven it through the covers for a four. And then he defends the last ball of the over. 5/326 in 109, six overs remaining.
