Postecoglou has Socceroos purring

By Steve Larkin / Wire

Ange Postecoglou reckons the Socceroos were running on empty when he took over as coach.

But after 14 months of refuelling, Postecoglou now says he can take them for “a decent drive” – regardless of whether the trip includes an Asian Cup final.

“We can safely say we can go for a decent drive now. There’s plenty of fuel there,” Postecoglou said.

“How far? I’m not really sure. But we’re definitely heading in the right direction.”

Postecoglou’s 14-month journey as Australian coach continues on Tuesday with an Asian Cup semi-final against the United Arab Emirates in Newcastle.

He hit bumps along the way – critics circled after two wins from his initial dozen games – but Postecoglou never deviated.

“That is what annoys me more than anything else, that people actually think that I feel under pressure or my job is on the line,” he said.

“If it was job security I was after, I wouldn’t have taken the job.

“I was pretty settled at (Melbourne) Victory, I was pretty settled at Brisbane Roar and could have had a contract for life.”

Postecoglou’s map had no short-cuts. He was steadfastly on a road to regenerate, create deeper playing depth, and implement an attacking style.

He gets annoyed when pundits couldn’t realise some short-term pain was needed for long-term gain.

“I can’t understand the misunderstanding because everyone has been pretty clear on what we have been trying to achieve,” he said.

“I think it has been outstanding, what we’ve achieved over the past 14 months from where we were.

“The timing of what we did 14 months ago wasn’t great because, yes, we wanted to regenerate and rejuvenate and play a different style of football – but we had two of the biggest tournaments on our calendar inside 12 months.

“That is a little bit unfair on the players coming in, knowing who they had to replace, as a group.

“People want to say that everything we have done over the last 14 months hinged on 90 minutes. I think they would be ignoring the fact that some of our players are growing enormously through this period.”

Postecoglou also admitted “shaking my head” at talk the Socceroos needed to avoid favourites and defending champion Japan until the Asian Cup final.

The Blue Samurai were shock quarter-final losers to the UAE, while Asia’s top-ranked nation Iran also stumbled at the quarter-final hurdle.

“I haven’t seen a major tournament where the tournament goes to script,” Postecoglou said.

“I knew that there was no chance in hell that the four semi-finalists were going to be the four World Cup teams (from Asia), not a chance in hell, because that is not how tournament football works.

“We haven’t looked past our next opponent. If people were assuming we were preparing to meet a certain team in the final, they have missed the point of what we have been doing.

“We didn’t want to be the ones who missed out on a semi-final because we were thinking so far ahead.”

With the lack of technical skills the socceroos have he's done a good job the foot skills of many of the other teams make us look very ordinary we need more players with those skills to advance up the world rankings ladder!!!!

But context is the very thing you've completely missed here, and in your comment about our poor World Cup campaign. Both Ange and his players give the same straight, confident and forward-facing answers because that is what he requires to achieve success - everyone needs to buy in for it to work. This has always been a long term project, he was brought in with that objective. What he is getting up in arms about is that the media suddenly has amnesia on that point, and he has been lambasted for short term results when it was never a goal to attain short term results. He has now made a team that plays attractive football and can win, and in a big tournament no less. Hasn't he earned a right of reply to the haters and ignorant members of the media and public?

Well if you understand the context of the two 6-0 routes you would also understand that these two matches were to get a guage of where we were at. As with any friendly its obviously not as meaningful as a tournament match but surely you would concede that playing both Brazil and France is a great lead up to the WC finals. There are plenty of players playing for WC spots and by that stage Holger would have been told in no uncertain terms that he needed to start performing. So in that "context" those matches had a little more significance. In the end those two matches wrong or right cost Holger his job and most of our senior squad members any hope of going to the WC.

Yet you listen to any interview with his charges and all their answers are rooted in the same controlled confidence and progressive outlook as the man himself. Ange requires his players to buy in to his vision, it isn't just an idiosyncrasy but a real tactic that has come from past success. Listen to any Mourinho presser and you get the same themes over and over again, it's part of the package of what makes these guys good coaches.

I have seen enough football to understand the context of any football match. You refer to the result of 6-0. Were they against minnows. If Ange suffered such results he would dismiss them as unimportant because they were friendlies.

I dont think its arrogance. I think its more a question of Ange believing in what he is doing, his philosophy on football and the belief he has in his players. He has consistently done things his way, because he believes it to be the right way. Dont take the ignorant claim personally. There are plenty of people like yourself who dont understand the context of the results at the last world cup. Considering the short time frame he had to work with, the difficulties in replacing a manager quickly, the fact that he also had to regenerate a tired old squad that had consecutive hammerings of 6-0 then its quite remarkable where we find ourselves today. If we didnt take the neccessary steps needed at the World Cup then I fear what would have become of our national team.

I don't like arrogant people. If you do then each to their own. Please don't call me ignorant just because I compared the records of the last 3 managers. Then again I might of answered my question?

I am happy with how how far Ange has taken the national team. He always harped on one thing and he has consistently said "Judge me on my performances at the Asian Cup". To judge him on his performances purely on his world cup record is astonishingly ignorant. We had a fantastic world cup and to tell you the truth, it exceeded my expectations on what we would achieve. If you expected us to get out of the group that included Spain and the Netherlands who were both finalists at the 2010 world cup and a very strong Chile side then there is no hope for you. He has worked miracles in a very short space of time. In the lead up to the Asian cup he has sought the hard road. He has consistently played away from home against some of the hardest opponents available. That is how you improve and how you get better and this is what has occurred. The loss to Korea was obviously unplanned for but again I thought it was our best match of the tournament. Normally when we play Korea they normally give us a much tougher test and for the majority of games we have played them they usually play us off the park. Not in this case. The Koreans were still a very good outfit on the night but I thought we dominated them everywhere except where it counted, on the scoreboard. I cant see anything less than a win tonight against UAE and then for Australia to lift the Asian cup against a very good Korean side on the weekend. We finally have a manager who understands the mentality of the Australian people and what we should expect from our football team. Well done Ange, the pride of Australia is well and truly back.

Ange might get the results to prove his value as a coach. However I for one find his press interviews are often given to highlight is prowess. This interview demeaning the effort of post coaches and a previous one lambasting people who dare to suggest other ways of doing things are evidence of this. Ange should be reminded that his record at the world cup was played 3 lost 3. Far worse then the performance of the two previous coaches, who each collected 4 points. In this competition he lost when he came up against South Korea. When manager of Melbourne Victory his record was just satisfactory given the resources available to him. I read a report that he can be an arrogant manger.

He's restored our attacking, positive mentality, bow to noone. Just as he promised in his first interview. There's a long way to go, but God this is so much better than the abject display in the last WCQ v Iraq Forward momentum at last :)

Irrespective of the results in his two remaining Asian Cup games Ange has done enough for me to believe we've made the right choice - he is the best head coach for the Socerroos

Stop talking sense Ange. We don't want long term progress, carefully mapped out. We don't want progress measured in performance. We want immediate results, to win every meaningless friendly ;)
