MCG match flabbergasted Liverpool

By Vince Rugari / Wire

Liverpool’s visit to Melbourne two years ago “flabbergasted” the English Premier League side and helped change the way overseas clubs viewed the Australian market.

Liverpool’s commercial director Olly Dale believes their match at a sold-out MCG in 2013 made some of the world’s biggest clubs take notice of Australia and its thirst for top-level football.

Big clubs from Europe and South America have long visited these shores but an unprecedented off-season looms with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City and AS Roma all coming in July.

Dale believes Liverpool’s clash with Melbourne Victory in front of 100,000 fans – days after the inaugural A-League All-Stars match against Manchester United – is partly responsible for the new wave of interest from abroad.

“We took our lead from the people in Melbourne who knew the events marketplace well,” said Dale, who is in Australia to help promote Liverpool’s upcoming friendlies in Brisbane and Adelaide.

“Their expectations were that we would sell between 50,000 and 70,000 seats.

“They were pretty flabbergasted when 100,000 tickets melted off the screen in a matter of hours.”

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler said the club still talks about the MCG game and the spine-tingling pre-match rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, which has since amassed more than 3 million views on YouTube.

“That’s not a cliched answer, we actually do talk about it,” Fowler said.

“It was unproven territory if you like. We’d never been here before as a club, but I think the decision to come here was vindicated.”

In the same week as Liverpool’s two games in July, Real Madrid, Manchester City and AS Roma will all compete for the International Champions Cup in Melbourne.

“This is a country that’s steeped in history and heritage in the sport and likes to see the best,” Dale said.

“You’re now seeing the best teams come here.”

I was in Wimbledon in 1999 on centre court watching Pat Rafter play & the friend I was with (who got me the ticket) spent more time on the phone telling her friends she was in Wimbledon then watching the match.

I was just having a bit of fun with the way society is heading today, where you are more worried telling people you were there rather than just enjoying the moment itself when it happens.

I agree Ian the ticketing was diabolical. I was lucky that one of my roar companions is retired and was able to go the next day and queue at ticketek and interact with a human which made things a little easier. .but I had resigned myself to watching it on tv by 10am on monday. So I do count myself lucky to be going along. The ACL matches will be a dead loss for me also. I reckon you've got enough in your pocket for pizza for the rest of the year courtesy of these debacles.

I remember that. As a Victory fan living in Queensland I had to watch on TV and was sick of the fapping over LFC. Then in the last 10 minutes of the game, with our young attackers having tested Brad Jones on several occasions, I began to hear "Melbourne Victory, our boys in blue..." and couldn't have been happier - we were still singing despite being 1-0 down and heavily outnumbered in the stands! I hope the Den are allowed to do the "Who are we???" after YNWA!

Thanks Chris - putting to one side the Ticketek issues which seem to be normal for any big event the main issue, at least for me, is that in a game where demand was always going to exceed supply no provision was made for the Roar season members - of which there are just under 12,000. The ticket sale commenced at 8 AM for Roar fans and LFC members alike, worse still thd password was ROAR which was circulated wildly on email, sms, websites etc and Ticketek melted down, 4 1/2 hours later the site was opened to the football community with the password FAMILY. The net result is once someone got in you could buy ten tickets or one irrespective of whether you are a member or not - to make matters worse the social media backlash was aimed directly at Brisbane Roar and not the organisers LFC - this also comes at a time the club is getting a whipping from its fans for taking ACL games 2 hours south of the City. We didn't need this. So it was a mess and yes, it will do some good but in the way it's been handled it's also damaged the Roars reputation with its members and broader community -- it could have and should have been handled better hence my original post. This is an LFC circus for their benefit, that's okay with me, but when they damage the host club as they have questions then have to be asked - it should have been possible to get a win-win and not hack off thousands of season members.

Maybe you can put it on your Facebook that you went to the game and saw Ronaldo in the flesh. Because that's what most people would do :) In all seriousness, it's not about seeing Ronaldo. It's about telling people you saw Ronaldo. That's what you are paying for. ;)

I'm not a big fan either, but if this is the only opportunity to watch your favourite team or player. I never went to any all stars games against Man U or Juve in Sydney, I'm not a fan of either. However, I am flying down to Melbourne for the Real Madrid game because this may be the only chance I ever get to see Ronaldo play. I have mates (Liverpool fans, heaps of them unfortunately) who were there 2 years ago in Melbourne & already booked to go both Brisbane & Adelaide via their local Liverpool fan clubs, eg LFC NSW | The Official LFC Supporters Club of NSW.

Apart from relieving fans and interested patrons of their cash and raising their own profile (and football) in this country I doubt whether any real benefit can be gained from an exhibition match! Not unless Liverpool or any other major team decides to stay for a week and conduct coaching/player clinics. Strangely as it may sound, I am only interested in our local game, the ACL and the Socceroos. Outside of that not the slightest bit interested in which high profile club is coming to town. Live for the day the WSW tour Wembley and they get a packed house singing " Who do we sing for?" Dream on I hear you say! ;-)

These are friendly matches. You can't expect any sensible football fan to have more than a passing interest in the on-field or result. I'm pretty vocal and tense during any competitive match but for a practice match you can't seriously think people are going to get emotionally involved?

Well Chris can't speak for others , but in my case I was desperate to see my team the Roar pitted against a quality team of world wide renown.,they just happened to be called Liverpool instead of Bayern Munich or ManU. It wasn't just the amount of bays allocated to them compared to the One Roar bay(usually 3 for active anyway)it was the process of procuring a ticket. If you read deeper into the process,we were given a password ROAR with no exclusivity to that password,in other words as others have said it could be emailed or texted from 5am( when we received an email from the club regarding ticketing details) to anybody to use from kick off at 8am last Monday. However it wouldn't have mattered it kept popping up as invalid every time you put in that password and you tried to get tickets. Ten frustrating minutes later in my case I got into Ticketek to a log jam. I wanted 9 tickets and after much toing and froing got the 9, but we were on a time limit to process the transaction and with each step being laboriously slow ,by the time I punched submit it dropped out. This was the case for many diehard Roar ,not Liverpool fans, if you want to confirm that check the complaints on the Roar forum. Why they didn't just let you obtain tickets with your member number as has happened before, rather than the wide open ROAR password, I don't know. Then again the it may still have not worked for 10 minutes anyway and most Roar fans are pointing the finger at Ticketek. If you still think that we Roar fans deserved that,as an outsider to the process, well personally I don't give a toss,we didn't get a fair go and won't in the future if such a big club plays our team and the same MO for purchasing tickets is in place.

Yeah. Not a massive fan of these friendlies. No doubt it generates a lot of cash, and gets a lot of bandwagoners off their couches. Much more value in a season a-league ticket for me. These events are just exhibition matches for people to say they saw Liverpool.

I remember the game. It was fairly entertaining. Atmosphere and crowd were absolutely rubbish for the 90mins but sounded good next to the library that was ANZ Stadium a few days earlier.

There are pros and cons with these tours. What would be good is if the games generated more money for the FFA or the competing clubs. What worries me is that like any get rich scheme there will be fly by nighters and charlatans getting involved. The one true positive is that it is a massive up yours to the AFL etc that soccer clubs on working holidays can outsell their real season product at the same venues. But equally if the AFL and their cunning mates will turn that around. Football tours and their riches should benefit football. It also works against Adelaide and Perth in that it reinforces the NIB and Hindmarsh are not worth expanding to say 25=30,000 becos mega events have to move to biggest venues. FFA is a long way from the AFL, NRL tv deal rights but it does have clout in real football. They have to get control of this scenario before it gets out of hand and ensure its brand of football is a major beneficiary. I refer back to earlier topics, like the NPL vs A-League etc. If at least $5.00 from tix for this years line ups went to HQ then that's a few million to reduce junior fees or resurface an overused field.
