[VIDEO] Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels highlights: NRL scores, blog

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Round 2 kicks off at ANZ Stadium as the Canterbury Bulldogs take on the Parramatta Eels in a rivalry game that is sure to be a cracker. Join The Roar from 7:30pm (AEDT) as we bring you live coverage.

Last week we saw the Eels play on Friday night against the Manly Sea Eagles and win very convincingly.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had one of the games of the round against the Panthers at Pepper Stadium in Penrith. After being down 24-0, they recovered to 24-18 but just couldn’t put the icing on the cake for victory.

The Bulldogs go into the game without Josh Reynolds, who is possibly going to be out for eight weeks in what will be a massive blow for them. Replacing Reynolds in the number 6 jersey is Moses Mbye and there’s plenty of pressure on the youngster.

The Eels have named the same squad they had last week, however it is expected that Junior Paulo will miss out due to suspension, which could pave the way for Danny Wicks to return to the NRL off the bench.

A good crowd will be expected at ANZ Stadium for this game which could have a massive influence on the game, particularly if one team can shut the other team’s supporters out of it early in the piece.

The Bulldogs will need Trent Hodkinson to stand up, along with Michael Lichaa. For the first three quarters of last week’s game they were not good in attack and this week without Reynolds they can’t afford to get off on the wrong foot, particularly if the Eels, led by Chris Sandow, play like they did last week.

Meanwhile, the Eels will aim to keep the same sort of defence they had last week while cutting out the mistakes, of which they made a lot.

For the Eels Sandow is the key. Last week he produced a blinder and was unlucky to miss out on man of the match honours. A quieter achiever in the Parramatta Side is back-up hooker Isaac De Gois. The spark he provides off the bench and the break he gives Nathan Peats is pivotal for the Eels.

Kicking games will be a massive factor in this game. Both teams have pretty solid defence and the Eels are only getting better in that regard, particularly with the addition of Antony Watmough. Therefore field position, coming off kicking, is going to be massive.

Prediction
After last round’s performances I can’t go past the Eels.

Parramatta by 12.

Parra were full of beans at the start of the game and were offloading beautifully (only because the Dogs were hopeless in covering them up) but as the game went on and their pile of piled on injuries started off by Watmough (who btw had a chest injury prior to the game starting and was heavily bandaged) going off and coming on and then Radradra together with Sandown going off shortly after and then Champion which must have really upset Parra’s rhythm. All in all I thought that the Dogs were persistent and really could have done better when they were 8-0 up at half time and when the second half started. They consistently let Parra offload and then when Parra scored their first try there were at least 5 to 6 offloads made by Parra and that was on the 5th tackle which made their first try. After that Parra just got stronger and their running game overtook the Dogs who were lazy and dropped the ball at curtail stages of the game. But eventually the injury toll overtook Parra and the score really didn't reflect the overall contest of this game. Good win by the Dogs and Brett Morris had a blinder and if he wasn't there I think the Dogs would have found it harder to win this game just like last week when he scored a try through sheer guts and determination and had a blinder also. Sam Kasiano should really get some more fitness as he look overweight and lazy and most of the time stands still and does nothing and goes nowhere as should Tim Lafai who only came good with his hard barging runs at the end of the game when Parra dropped off and were beaten.

I see your point, would say more like 8 and 6, biggest worry is that there are some obvious issues with how the other players interact with him at the back -- Jackson went back for one under the posts in the first half that was Morris ball all day and resulted in more ball for the Eels, and Klemmer kicked one he should've just left Morris to take that led to a try.

What I'm saying is over the first 2 rounds his attack is 8 and his defence is 4..looking forward to seeing him have a good fullbacks defensive game where he actually is directly responsible for stopping tries..a Jack Wighton on Mitch G...a Billy Slater hand under the ball denial..showing some smarts the position demands rather than, well, how many wingers are there with game nous ? Haven't seen any evidence of that yet..but ,hey,I like watching Brett..to me he's the best winger in the world..and if he can get it together back there, the other sides are playing for second..

So your criticism is that he missed one tackle on Semi (well, fell off after making useful contact) and couldn't hold onto a ball that Klemmer kicked into him at close range? If that's the two worst mistakes he made, then I'd say he had a pretty good game. Though with that said, from what I observed there were at least two guys in front of him for Man of the Match (Graham and Mbye).

of course I do..why,in that position was an ankle tap the best he could do..pure and simply that was a missed tackle and he knew it..Jackson should never have had to be a factor.

You realise Jackson only caught up to Semi because Morris ankle tapped him right?

If JJ can nail him from behind, you'd like to think your fullback could..it's not as if he ran thru him like Segeyaro did,it was just a poor tackle..for a $450k marquee..

Brett Morris is the only player ever to have Radradra break through his attempted tackle.

I think Parra need to make a tough call on De Gois. He's in their best 17 no doubt and was a great signing last year when Peats was injured, but it's a waste of a bench spot at the moment.

Pretty rough on Morris for the second Mau try. The ball was kicked into him by Klemmer. Pretty hard toick that up even for the best fullbacks. Defensive positioning will come with more game time. Very dangerous with the ball.

I think that was because you guys tried to move him there mid season, while the Dogs grabbed him on the condition that he was to become a fullback, and he would train like that during the offseason.

Which is something I have always said when he was at St George. I guess as a Dragons supporter, something that really gets to me is that he never wanted to play fullback when he was there, but now at the Dogs he wants to? Think he is a genuine contender for NSW FullBack this year.

Yeah, thought they stood up to the challenge well. Not sure that will be too easy for the dogs whilst Lichaa, Hodkinson and Reynolds are there.

There's absolutely no doubting Moz's ability with the football,a beautiful sight in flight..but he will get eaten up and spat out by the quicker thinking Rabbit and Rooster halves..far too slow on his line, missed Radrada (saved by Jackson, the real man of the match)and showed he still cant handle any ball on the ground (ie Mau's second)..in fact, the polish of his running is inversely proportionate to his cumbersomeness off his line..kudos to Parra for keeping on coming but the casualty list is now critical and soon will start flashing on empty..

Hodkinson and Mbye performed pretty well I thought, Bulldogs need to try and wrap Mbye up on a longer term deal.

Not sure if Wicks had the match fitness for more minutes. I agree with you re de gois and Peats. Should have been switched at the back end of the first and second half. The intent was good though, zippy dummy half to explode through some tired Dogs defence. I guess that game plan went out the window when the dogs had 70% + possession in the 1st half.

How explosive is B Morris. His top speed appears to be instantaneous.

Wicks should've played more minutes. Having both Peats and De Gois on at the same time against such a big Bulldogs pack was ineffective.

Wicks was quite impressive.
