Manly confirm Kieran Foran is leaving the club

By The Roar / Editor

Manly have confirmed Kieran Foran will leave the club at the end of the 2015 NRL season to join Parramatta.

The news ends weeks of speculation that the New Zealand international would link up with for Sea Eagles coach Brad Arthur who now coaches the Eels.

The move is another crushing blow to the Sea Eagles, who are also losing Foran’s halves partner Daly Cherry-Evans after he accepted a big-money Gold Coast offer starting next season.

Foran is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered in Manly’s round one hiding at the hands of the Eels. He has played 129 games for the Sea Eagles, and at only 24 is expected to be one of the league’s premier players.

He informed his Sea Eagles teammates of his decision this morning. The deal is believed to be worth around $4.8 million over four years.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey praised Foran for his contribution to the club, but was disappointed the club has lost such a talented player.

“Kieran is a fantastic player and a wonderful young man. He has played an integral role in the Club’s recent on-field successes and will do so for the remainder of this season,” Toovey said.

‘Kieran has the utmost respect of everyone at the Club and we are proud to have seen him develop into the player that he is today.”

“While today’s news is disappointing, we respect his decision and will move on quickly to ensure that’s we’re focused for Friday night’s clash with the Bulldogs at Brookvale Oval.”

Sea Eagles CEO Joe Kelly also paid tribute to Foran’s contribution.

“Kieran has been an incredible talent for the Sea Eagles for many years and it’ll be sad for all of us to see him leave at the end of the season,” Mr Kelly said.

“I have great admiration for Kieran, not only as a footballer but most importantly as a person. He is a quality individual. I recognise that it has been an immensely difficult decision for Kieran.”

“The Club is now in a position of having the resources necessary to recruit some of the best talent in the marketplace, to ensure that the Sea Eagles remain a dominant team in the NRL.”

That's just how it goes, Roosters have had Cordner, Guerra, Tupou, Tuivasa-Sheck who made their debut with the Roosters and now are representative players, Jake Friend is being touted as Cameron Smiths replacement in the queensland side, Souths have made McQueen a rep player and more likely than not Walker and Johnston will become big names.

It's a bit of a fallacy that the money is so much better in northern hemisphere rugby. If it was players like Foran and Cherry-Evans would be out of reach of NRL clubs. The load factor is also not that much different - the top tier French clubs play 26 rounds in the Top XIV, plus 6 pool games in the European Championship; finals in either competition are on top of that. Foreign players, without the burden of test rugby, tend to play full workloads, which is at least as many games as if they were playing in the NRL as well as rep games in Australia. Then there is individual reasons for staying in Australia. Plenty of the best league palyers in the last two decades have had the opportunity to play rugby overseas, not many have. Johns, Thurston, Lockyer, Smith, Slater - all would have been a success in European rugby. They would have certainly commanded good money. Maybe it would be outside their comfort zone? Gasnier went for the experience, Hunt too between the Broncos and the Suns. It's not just always about the money.

I can agree on some of the above but RTS has even surprised me.He's been exceptional! In attack he's showed some nice touches/ball-playing skills and has picked his moments well to chime in.His positional play in D has also been very good and looks safe and confident under the high ball(JT tested that out) Remember this is all quite new to him and he can only and should get better. Tupou got rag dolled off his line a little but in his defence, the Bunnies have perfected the hold them up and drive them back tackle. His combination with Jenko is now telepathic like. I can't see any changes unless there's an injury or SOO duties. I also wish the refs would clamp down on the blockers. Fergo is also finding his feet. His D is solid however his timing in attack is out.A little like Will Hoppa last season. It takes time but he'll get there.I agree that he would make a good fullback though. Yeh Hastings could more than likely do the job whilst Friend is out.I think Robbo likes to groom em slowly though. He gave him a taste last year and he didn't disappoint.

..I don't want to wait any longer for Hastings get him in there now at hooker..must be tempting to try and get Nene in there somewhere, too ..Tupou scored a nice try,but.....huge liability off his own line..dunno about having a dancer at fullback either, rather have a big lump like Fergo getting meters and bringing it back straight, hard and fast..

If Foran, who choked hard in the 2013 GF is worth $1.2 mill a season then Maloney with his goal kicking ability would be worth $1.5 mill. Seriously, these amounts for Foran and DCE are just ludicrous! Maloney isn't on the outer at the Roosters. They just can't afford to keep everyone that's off-contract at the seasons end. Enter Jackson Hastings who will be on an modest amount for the short term allowing the Roosters to retain JWH,Napa etc.

Yes please. Take Tamou. Manly can have him now. We'll also throw in Lui for free to 'solve' your problem in the halves as well. Foran is good but not worth the money that the Eels are paying him. Manly will have a few lean years but they'll rebuild and find someone cheaper. Manly would be crazy to chase Sandow. They should target Hodkinson, sign a young 5/8 looking for an opportunity, and use the leftover money to buy some decent forwards.

I think you will find that post rugby world cup will be when players sign with union, not league. Why would you cut your paycheque in half to play league in Sydney, when you can play union in France. It is easier on the body as well.

I am going to hold you to this. Quade wont fetch 2mil, but if he wins the WC for the Wallabies (we will be favs if we houdini it out of the top of our pool) he will be too much for any league club to handle

No, you wait till the June 30 deadline for player transfers. If you have injurys or the right player comes on the market you use your cap accordingly. Otherwise you front end contracts leaving cap space the following year to buy a marquee player like , I don't know, Foran. With Hayne leaving left us in a unique position. We' ll reap the benefits next year.

If that were the case, Penrith and the Warriors would top the table each and every year.

"Their still a mill under the cap this year". You don't actually believe that do you? All teams, irrespective of playing talent, are pretty bang on the cap. No club would leave a million just sitting there. It's not like you can warehouse it and use it the following year or anything.

I acknowledge Manly set the standard in the 70s and 80s in buying talent. That was 30 and 40 years ago. My point is most arguments continue that theme when the reality has been somewhat different for nigh on 20 years.

If Manly throw a million a season at him - a not unreasonable amount given the current player market in the NRL - that won't be far off the money he'd earn in northern hemisphere rugby. Dan Carter might be able to get ab2put $2.5 million a season in France, Quade won't.

Fox M, you say you love the lazy stereotypes....then throw one in yourself. "...million dollar contracts at rival clubs players...to "buy" a Premiership a la GI. " When GI was signed by Souths, he was not contracted to any other club - he was released by Melbourne in the aftermath of the Storm's salary cap issues. He was a free agent. You asked for the names of players Manly signed who were at the top of their career. Let's start with 2 - John O'Neill and Ray Branighan, Premiership winners lured from Souths. Quote from Bob Fulton in the book The Eagle Has Landed : " We had the brilliance to win games, but we didn't have the steel. We became very strong with the influx of these players." Manly then won their first Premiership. Would you say they " bought " a Premiership ? Some more names Johnny Mayes, Gary Stephens, Mal Reilly, Phil Lowe, Steve Norton, John Dorahy, Steve Knight, Les Boyd, Ray Brown, John Ribot, ( the last 5 en masse from Wests Magpies ) Bill Hamilton, Bruce Walker, John Gray, Cliff Lyons, Michael O'Connor, Ian Roberts, Mark Carroll, David Gillespie, Terry Hill. Manly also produced many fine players over the years, but they certainly weren't averse to feathering their own nest.

Manly, unlike the NQ sharks have more class than the transients. Keep voting for Clive Palmer and you might get a T-Rex. Cyclones aren't the only things that blow in NQ.

Foran has done Manly a favour. No player is worth 1.2 million. Manly made them what they are ..what were either of them before arriving at Manly. DCE could not get a start anywhere in QLD ? His first contract which was upgraded was 85k , 115k for 2 years Will pick up someone you don't want and he will go well. DCE and FORAN are great players but I don't think either are worth what they will get paid thus was let go.
