Brookvale doesn't need a facelift, it needs a rebuild

By Lachlan Jeffery / Roar Guru

Like all the league diehards, I love to watch NRL games at the old suburban grounds. However, having watched Friday night’s match between Manly and Canterbury, there might be a problem.

The field was in a poor condition and there always complaints about the facilities and food pricing. This is not just at Brookvale Oval, it’s at most of Sydney’s suburban grounds.

The NSW government announced in 2014 that they would no longer fund the suburban grounds. To the traditionalists this is a bad idea. To the futurists this is a good idea.

But the suburban grounds give the games soul. Dave Smith wants to keep the suburban grounds, however they need to be fixed. Some grounds need to be completely knocked down and rebuilt.

The Sea Eagles want a million dollar upgrade of Brookvale Oval. But a complete rebuild is necessary. It is a public ground, but if Manly are going to keep playing rugby league here, this needs to change.

There should be a rebuild with a grandstand at each end, while still keeping the hill, and also upgrading the toilet, food and bar facilities. If they make the grandstands fairly large and wrap them around one side of the field, they can have a capacity of over 30,000, and still have some room down the end of the ground for a public park and decent sized parking lot and bus station.

These factors could lead to more supporters coming through the gates, more money from gate receipts and a better atmosphere for supporters travelling from Sydney and the rest of Australia.

Manly would be by far the main tenant. I doubt any of the 6 local events would need the same facilities as an event which would get 10,000 plus or cause as much wear and tear.

AR Comical silly response ... Do you think Brookvale oval is only used by Manly. Do you think it go into that state by Manly's hand alone. When you know something comment till then STFU. There was 6 local events at the ground over the preceding 7 days before the game against the dogs. That is why it was in such bad knick.

Someone said that brookvale only hosts 12 games a year. There's actually a whole host of other games played there. The week prior saw 5 games played there, and the week of the sand pit saw a game the previous night. I hope they get the new stadium they want. As one stated, the money spent on it can be recouped, its not a pipe dream as such. For manly in their position and location, it will be a good idea I think. The govt 600m investment in stadia is not the only money going into these stadiums completely.

This might sound silly, but rather than rebuild at Brookie with its limited parking and space for building, would a brand new stadium at Pittwater Park make more sense. It is quite a big park( the park, not the ground) which would allow more parking and space to build a modern stadium. Manly could share the facility with the Rats

I think Manly are already considering taking games there if Brookvale oval isn't up to standard.

Haha, it's always hilarious when people from Sydney and Melbourne try to get their heads around public transport on the GC.

There's a lot of private money in them as well. Governments don't mind putting in money when it's more than matched by private enterprise. The local economy will get a massive injection and they'll make the money back from taxes.

Manly owners, St Augustines College, North Harbour Rays and I believe the Central Coast Mariners are part of a consortium lobbying Warringah Council and the State and Federal govt's over Brookvale. The 23,000 all seater alternative they have had an architect drawer up aren't finalised but will be funded by rezoning and building a major development at the southern end on Pittwater road. This development will be mixed use, residential and commercial and pay for the redevelopment, hence no Tax Payer money. They need State input to help with Council objections as they are considering the entire thing a Major works project which then takes it out of Council hands, State would then run the stadium long term ala Parramatta, Hunter etc etc. It's not such a pipe dream and with he public amenities being talked about it could be a goer.

Brookvale council clearly stated they don't have the money for maintenance but somewhere in their contracts with their tenants especially the Sea Eagles, Brookvale Council should of had the Manly Club or the Nrl cover half or most of ground maintenance in return for cheap rent!! Brookvale oval is not worthy of either cheap rent or a good playing surface it still won't fix what's really needed like the major problem within the infrastructure itself = light that Stadium up & burn it to the ground well you catch the drift!!

The major problem for Skilled is that in all their infinite wisdom when building it, they forgot to put in a carpark. Quite often I'll think about heading along to see a Titans game on a Sunday arvo (free tix of course, I'm certainly no supporter :) ) but then realise the effort of driving to a train station, parking, waiting for the train, only to do it all again after the match, puts me completely off. I'm sure others feel the same way.

So the council aren't going to pay for an upgrade and neither will the NRL. Then move. They can't keep going like this.

Having a train station nearby is only useful if the train goes where you want to go. To those who don't live in SE Queensland, you might not get that the train here is totally useless unless you live on the west side of the Gold Coast. It's actually easier for people in Brisbane to get to the ground by train than it is for most of the GC. If you're down closer to the coast from broadbeach to paradise point, it's a nightmare and you have to rely on stupid buses. I've gone with melbourne victory fans to a gold coast away game and to get from a bar in Surfers Paradise to the stadium is so much more difficult than it should be. In addition, Robina is like Homebush in that it's a totally boring area. There is no Caxton St or Swan St for fans to gravitate to before the game and build up the atmosphere. Even Homebush has two bars next to it, although they are complete bogan pits.

'The nrl needs to start putting its foot down on the construction of these grounds - and to do that they need to invest it’s own capital." The first half of that post is utter nonsense - the NRL (like every other sporting body) actively lobbies state governments to build stadiums exactly like the one at Robina. The second half of that post is spot on - the NRL should invest some of its profits into a new stadium, or as capital equity in an existing one.

Yeah, but if the Sea Eagles want a better condition of field, then really they should pay for it, via increased rents. But if I was the council, before doing that, I would want the Sea Eagles to agree to that, and sign a longer term contract.
