Size of the fight in the dog: Beware the Black Caps

By David Lord / Expert

New Zealand is slightly bigger than Victoria with a national population smaller than Sydney, yet they stand tall on the international sporting scene.

They are unbeaten in the current cricket World Cup, and take on Australia tomorrow at the MCG in their first decider, having beaten the men in gold by one wicket in their pool game.

The All Blacks are the current World Cup champions, going unbeaten in the 2011 tournament, taking care of the Pumas 33-10 in the quarters, the Wallabies 20-6 in the semis, and France 8-7 in the final.

The All Blacks have also won the coveted Bledisloe Cup for the last 12 years, and are the current Rugby Championship holders.

The Kiwis were unbeaten in the Four Nations rugby league tournament last year, downing the Kangaroos 30-12 in the round-robin, before repeating the dose 22-18 in the final.

New Zealand has produced five magnificent Olympic athletes over the years.

Jack Lovelock was their first Olympic gold medallist, winning the 1500 metres at the 1936 Berlin Games.

Murray Halberg won 5000 metre gold at the Rome Olympics in 1960.

Peter Snell won Olympic gold in the 800 at Rome as well, plus 800 and 1500 gold in Tokyo in 1964. He was named New Zealand’s Sports Champion of the 20th Century.

John Walker won Olympic 1500 gold at the 1976 Montreal Games, and during his stellar career he broke the four-minute barrier for the mile 135 times.

Not to be outdone, Yvette Williams won long jump gold at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.

All five held world records during their careers.

The Kiwis produced Bob Charles, the first left-hander to win a golfing major, the 1963 British Open. They also produced a men’s singles finalist at Wimbledon in Chris Lewis, who ran into a buzz-saw John McEnroe to be beaten 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in 1983.

Peter Blake skippered Team New Zealand to America’s Cup victory in 1995. Equestrian Mark Todd won two gold and two bronze at 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Canoeist Ian Ferguson won four Olympic gold – the K1 over 500, K2 over 500, and K4 over 1000 at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and K2 gold over 500 in Seoul in 1988.

New Zealand rowing has been spectacular, with nine gold and twelve other Olympic medals, and 24 world championship golds.

And last, but by no means least, the Silver Ferns, New Zealand’s netball team, constantly have titanic tussles with the Australian Diamonds, quite often with just a goal in it.

Netball isn’t an Olympic sport, but the Silver Ferns have won four world championships – 1967, 1979, 1987, and 2003 – and Commonwealth Games gold in 2006 and 2010.

Kiwi sports lovers can feel justifiably proud of their rep teams.

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Na, we made it to the final and for some that's good enough. NZ won't really care if we lose, don't get me wrong it would be great! But we'll get over it quickly...... The All Blacks on the other hand is a different story. NZ public will be buzzing for 4 looooong years though. So no pressure, more pressure on the Ozzies and their high expectation of Australian cricket. Go BCs ...... Don't get lost in the plains of the MCG outfield.

Neither did I but based purely on the results and matches in this tournament, no reason NZ can't win it. Sport has certainly had hundreds of bigger upsets than this is purported to be. All I've heard is anecdotal and historical evidence of a stronger aus lineup and a foreign, bigger ground. It's a good enough side for this final to come down to key 'moments'...and we've certainly proved we can have them. BM is committed to launching a full out attack tomorrow and in that regard, NZ has never seen a side anything like it, 92 had aspects of it but ironically, was beaten by a very McCullum type innings by Inzamam...

Is that it? Wow! Ok i'll bite. I would argue the way you, Ted and others are carrying on its Australia and their supporters who are the one's seeking validation. David's article was merely highlighting Kiwi sports people and team achievements over the years and in some cases against incredible odds. Producing world class sportsmen and women given a relatively small population and the spirit in which they compete. That's what I got out of it. He wasn't trying to dismiss a country's sporting achievements just because it doesn't stack up against another. We all know how good the Aussie sports people and teams are. We've all seen the 'Aussie Battler' fight tooth and nail on the big stage and come out on top, against incredible odds. If you're that concerned about wanting the world to know all about Australia's sporting achievements ask David to write an article on the subject it should make you, Ted and whoever else feel better. Get David to provide a detailed list of all of Australia's achiev.... Oh, that's right, you've already made a list. You should complete the list. It should make interesting reading and make people stand up and pay attention. Surfing, swimming, tennis, now that's global right there mofo! Thanks for liking us. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside now. I better finish right I'm starting tear up. Love you man!

Yes, and you love it jokerman. Every time an Aussie writes something you don''t like it gives you the opportunity to validate that massive chip on your shoulder. No doubt you'll be on here gloating if NZ win tomorrow but there'll be nary a peep from you if NZ lose. I suppose you haven't noticed that most Aussie posters are respectful of the Black Caps and wouldn't be toooooo disappointed to lose to them.In fact, quite a few want NZ to win seeing as, you know, we've won it 4 times already. Oh, and of course because some of us are embarrassed to be boorish, arrogant, Americanized, over-confident, mean, loud-mouth, drunk, convicts from Auzzie, sorry i mean the West Island.

Always been more in awe of kiwis (or southerners in general) who achieve outside traditional commonwealth sports. Big fan of Valerie Adams, Anne-Lise Coberger also comes to mind as she was a pretty decent alpine skier a while ago. NZ isn't the only small country to do well on the world stage from time to time but it is one of them so its always nice to see them perform. Cricket isn't a world sport as such but still a WC final is a WC final and they are a few countries with big populations, despite being 3rd world, who take the sport verrrry seriously so big congrats to the kiwis for making the final. Plus they have been playing a very attractive brand of cricket that even non connaisseurs like myself enjoy watching.

For NZ it's an adventure. I didn't really expect we'd go this far and all this bravado from the Aussies is amusing. I guess they're trying to pump themselves up. The neat thing about this NZ side is that they won't die wondering unlike the Indian side.

What is this moment you are craving tiger? Being validated as a decent sporting country by Australian sporting journalists like David Lord? I was under the impression that NZ was finally over looking towards Australia for validation. Seems not. Don't fret tiger, we think you're great. Hope that makes you feel better.

Yes we can have that one...NZ has been winning those scenarios lately anyway...and for 30 years all our players have been secretly practising for that exact scenario...flip it up with the bat and whack it for six... Every kiwi can do it these days... ;-)

Can we please have this scenario? One ball remains, NZ batting with 5 to tie and 6 to win... Michael Clarke hobbles across to Mitchell Starc and they have a long discussion, Clarke seems to wave his arm in an underarm motion. Starc nods with an understanding look on his face. He shortens his run up down to just a few steps...

You really have no idea do you Ted, haha, Looking at your comments you sound paranoid. Could it be that you're afraid we might actually take this thing out?
