Backs Caps sledged for being 'too nice'

By News / Wire

Brad Haddin has revealed why New Zealand’s batsmen copped a verbal “send off” in the World Cup final – they were too nice.

Still celebrating Australia’s one-sided victory on Monday morning, Haddin explained why he had a crack at dismissed Kiwi batsmen Martin Guptill and Grant Elliott at the MCG on Sunday.

“You know what? They deserved it,” Haddin told Triple M radio.

Haddin then spoke about how nice the Black Caps were to the Australians when they were in Auckland earlier in the tournament for their pool match, which was won by New Zealand.

“They were that nice to us in New Zealand and we were that uncomfortable,” Haddin said.

“I said in the team meeting: `I can’t stand for this anymore. We’re going at them as hard as we can.

“It was that uncomfortable. All they were was that nice to us for seven days.

“I said, I’m not playing cricket like this. If we get another crack at these guys in the final I’m letting everything (out).”

Haddin had been handed the phone for the interview by Steve Smith, who described him as the drunkest man in the team.

Haddin also provided jocular comment on the scene as the partying continued on Monday morning.

“I’ll paint a picture for you now,” he said.

“I’ve got a coach who’s spooning the World Cup who can’t speak.

“I’ve got James Faulkner who’s got his clothes off but don’t tell everyone.

“And I’ve got the Marsh boys, and you know I can’t even talk about the Marsh boys because you know what trouble they have.

“I’ve got Josh Hazlewood … he’s never been drunk in 30 years. It’s a problem. We just can’t get him drunk. He’s an absolute nightmare to drink with.”

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum was reluctant to fan the flames about sledging following the final.

“Send-offs are send-offs, it’s not something we are necessarily concerned about,” McCullum said.

“The focus should be on how well Australia played and how much they deserved this victory rather than any minor issues on the way through. I don’t want to go too deep into that.”

Australia captain Michael Clarke also dead-batted the issue.

“I can’t remember a player getting a send-off,” he said.

“I don’t think there was anything that was below the belt, as to say.”

Bullying is Bullying Jack. Why do they feel they need to continue this when a player is dismissed is beyond me. Would you tolerate it if your kids were being bullied? And if Slane considers this bad mouthed behaviour to be taking the piss he needs to educate himself a bit further. Classless.

Swearing and behaviour in soccer and even in kabaddi many times are far more vile and worse than anything in cricket.and soccer's by far the popularmost thing worldwide.some people should only tune into carrom and ludo..at best chess maybe.

Its funny, I never understood why my South African inlaws had a really low opinion about Australians, once they finally visited they were bowled over by how nice and accommodating the vast majority of Australians are. You can't blame them for thinking the worst when the only representatives they see are the cricketers! With regard to other sports, well they're all allot tougher than cricket, and generally when the game is over the sledging stops and the handshaking starts. What I saw was a Kiwi batsmen out, and the Aussie players gathered around persisting with sneering like a gaggle of adolescents, truly awful classless stuff.

The more I hear and read about Brad Haddin, the more pathetic he seems. His career is about how many ways he can find to sledge batsmen, while he is surrounded by ten mates. His career is boasting about this, to the extent he can stand with hands in pockets at Final's end, in front of millions of cricket lovers...supremely indifferent to his puffed up arrogance, indifferent on how to win with class. Terrified that he would be unable to play good cricket without being a foul mouth. Pity he is too chicken to play rugby. The sledging would see him last 5 minutes on the field. Haddin is certainly not tough, he is simply yet another boofhead floating around in that culture.

BBA, i can't see into haddin's mind but just guess he was giving it back to the authorities(or parts of it) who've been nothing short of opponents to the aussie team all summer, that includes pitch preparations and a few worse thing maybe that we understand but shouldn't mention cuz of evidencelessness. :-)

Yeah, and not only that, whilst we're all on here bagging them for being a pack of bastards, the fact is when something genuinely troubling happens on the field - like Yadav almost having his head taken off - half the Aussies ran in to check on him

He was definitely taking the piss. Sadly it appears that very few people on the other side of the Tasman are born with a sense of humour.

Forgot to add in that fiery Vittori fella. His shameless niggles of Australia must cease! So glad that Haddin was there and decided to sort out the real troublemakers of world cricket.

I thought it was pretty awkward at the presentations having Mark Nicholas talk about the retiring players and actually name Daniel Vettori,. He qualified it by saying that nothing is announced yet, but that was just really awkward. It's basically him saying that Vettori needs to retire, so he obviously will and just hasn't announced it yet. Rather rude and pretty stupid really! In fact, most of what Mark Nicholas had to say was pretty cringeworthy!
