Friday Night Forecast: Cats-Pies finally a game for the neutrals!

By Ryan Buckland / Expert

The Pies host the Cats in this week’s Friday night football, and it’s shaping up as a beauty.

I told you we’d persist, and look where we are now. A genuine, meaningful Friday night showdown between two sides looking to scrape their way into this year’s final eight.

It’ll be the fifth week out of six that we’ve seen the Pies or Blues open the round, which is an interesting, if not particularly meaningful, wrinkle.

First up, how did we go with last week’s forecast?

Prediction: Collingwood def. Carlton by 24 points
Actual: Collingwood def. Carlton by 75 points

A lot of inches have been dedicated to psychoanalysis of Carlton’s player this week, after they again defied the laws of nature by turning into pointy orange objects for most of last week’s match up. If you can’t get up for your coach in his 70-odd year record breaking game, well, when can you?

The Pies, meanwhile, are doing their pressure thing, and got a nice lift in their kicking efficiency by virtue of their opponent’s lack of ticker.

Here’s this week’s Friday Night Forecast.

Geelong Cats @ Collingwood Magpies
Friday, 8 May
Bouncedown: 7:50PM (EST)
MCG, Melbourne, Victoria

Yee hah! A Friday night game that genuine neutrals can get excited about!

It’s the first match up of teams coming off wins (that weren’t against the clear 18th placed team in another country) the previous week!

Another crazy fact! In 2008, the Cats went 21-1 in the regular season, blowing out everyone by ten goals or more. Who was the one loss? Collingwood. On a Friday night. Meaningful? Probably not. Awesome stat? Hell yeah.

Alright, calm down. It’s forecast time.

Collingwood are confounding pre-season expectations, and in starting 4-1 are building a compelling case for a top eight spot come the second week of September. I for one expected them to be towards the bottom end of the ladder, given the quality of the players that have exited in recent years and the inexperience that replaced them.

Coach Nathan Buckley and President Eddie McGuire threw the F word out before the season – and no, Eddie wasn’t referring to that F’ing equalisation or F’ing COLA or those F’ing state academies – a statement which was ridiculed as pandering to the fan base.

Let’s not get too carried away, though. The Pies have beaten Brisbane, St Kilda and Carlton thus far, with a win against Essendon in the wet their sole scalp in the year to date. Would beating Geelong, who finished third on the ladder last season, count as scalp number two?

The Cats are unravelling, having been sucked into the growth and decay cycle they had managed to avoid for close to a decade. A few years ago, you could point to close to a dozen players down at Geelong and say they’d be first choice in any side in the competition.

Now? Maybe Joel Selwood, Tom Hawkins and Harry Taylor. That’s it, no?

Both sides have negative disposal differentials on the season to date (-7.2 PG for Collingwood, -25.8 for Geelong), while the Pies have tended to play more on the inside of the contest relative to the Cats. It will be an interesting match up from a tactical standpoint, and who can play their style of footy will likely be the victor.

Either way, I reckon this one’s a beauty, and will be close for much of the night. But the Pies will improve to 3-0 on Fridays to start the season, with Collingwood to win by 12 points.

That’s my Friday Night Forecast. What’s yours?

Oh yeah, just got my pizza and beer and arrived home. Settled in for the night to watch my boys turn on a master-class performance. Cats by 16 points. I'd be lying if I said it was my head forecasting that though :)

Heh...yeah... In my defence, the subs slapped that headline on it. I was a Brisbane optimist, and postured that -if- they made a run Geelong would probably be the side they would dislodge.

Umm you might have got the bit about Geelong right. But the part about Brisbane making the eight! a bit off there however. If you changed Brisbane to Bulldogs then it might work!

I think it has, Mister. And thought as much heading into the season http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/03/03/whose-spot-will-lions-take-top-eight/ They'll be lauded as a historically great team in the late 00s-early 10s. But its hard to keep near the pointy end for three or four years, let alone almost 10.

If betting markets were like proper markets, $2.30 looks tasty for sure (they've drifted to $2.40 now). The Cats have more than a 1/3 chance of winning this game. But its a binary outcome, so save your pennies and put it on the Pies!

I totally agree, kick to kick. I'm just trying to rationalise their decision. I'm struggling...but there must be some logic to it. Next week's Friday night game looks a cracker though. It could be a genuine eight point game in the context of a top four spot, if one were to open up.

In a fortnight the Friday night game will be Cats Carlton while in the same weekend at the MCG there will be a grand final rematch. You'd have thought the Hawks Swans match would be inked in for prime time Friday as one of the first decisions for the 2015 TV plan. The AFL needs to be careful. It's in the TV entertainment and scheduling business. No scheduler who values his or her job puts second string content into the prime slot when there is a better prospect available.

Five years after we were first told that Geelong were going into decline, has it finally arrived? Collingwood look the goods for this one, likely to be a close one.

If Collingwood's win record isn't great because they've only beaten St Kilda, Carlton and Brisbane, then Geelong's loss record isn't so bad losing to Hawthorn Fremantle and the Kangaroos. Geelong paying $2.30 is ridiculous. I'll go that into Melbourne Victory for the Swan Street double. Even though Pendles and Selwood don't play directly on each other, watching them both go at it is one of the best contests of the year. I'm tipping Guthrie to do a better job on Pendles than the cats have previously managed to stop him and that's how to beat the magpies.

Totally agree. The Friday night games this season are mostly duds unless you follow the teams mentioned... with the exception of Essendon, the other teams did nothing last year to suggest they were above ordinary. I suspect the rationale is to try and get big crowds to the game in Melbourne, but as a neutral who likes Friday night footy, I have only watched a bit of one game... i wonder what the Ch7 tv execs think of this product, and it's ratings outside Victoria. perhaps next year the fri night fixture can feature more top performers, so the neutrals can enjoy.

Its an interesting set of scheduling to be sure, WIG. I get the feeling the AFL is quite certain that people will tune in regardless of who is playing, and so its all about maximising the at-the-ground audience. How long will it take til we get a Herald Sun article decrying the poor standard of Friday night games? I give it another three weeks - next week's game is going to be a cracker.

Lovely, we get to watch two teams who'll struggle to sneak into 8th spot. Its as if the AFL has actually gone out of its way to make Friday Nights as boring as possible this year. Heaven forbid this prime timeslot would actually involve a top 4 side huh? Instead, of the 23 Rounds this season do you know how many Friday Night games *don't* involve one of Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood or Essendon, the so called "big 4" Victorian sides? TWO.

I've heard about that, what a fantastic night to be at a sports bar. The best sports night that ever happens in Perth is when you've got a test match at the WACA during the day, Wildcats at the Arena across town, and the trots at Glouster Park in the evening. Three football codes, and whatever sport you want to call watching a 90s Boy Band, is pretty special.

What's your forecast Rick? Strong win? Or a signature less-than-two-kicks triumph for your boys?

The traffic is going to be crazy with the soccer @ Etihad, Rugby @ AAMI and the Back Street Boys @ Rod Laver arena.
